Abstract

In writing, to produce well-structured and understandable sentences, students must have knowledge of one aspect of grammar, namely parallelism. However, in fact, many students do not understand the concept of parallelism so that they fail to apply it in writing. This study examines the common types of faulty parallel structure in students‟ argumentative writing and investigates the factors which cause the fault. This is a qualitative study that collects the primary data from students‟ argumentative writing in particular topics which demand them to present their arguments and to provide their position, reasons and evidence in their writing, and the secondary data from the interview. As a result, this study discovers that students commit the faults in different types of parallelism, and mostly take place in parallel structure with elements joined by conjunction, both coordinating and correlative conjunction. The result of the interview section shows that students make the faulty parallelism due to lack of knowledge, lack of attention, and lack of vocabulary. Thus, in order to reduce the faulty parallel structure, the specific materials about parallelism should be added in writing or grammar‟s lesson plan.

Abstract

In academic situations, especially in proposal seminar presentations, code switching is generally used by the presenter and the audience also by all elements in the presentation for the different activities and different purposes. It gives a chance to them to communicate with each other by using their first language and foreign language. This qualitative study aims to explain the types of code-switching and the factors causing the students to use code-switching in their proposal seminar presentations. The subjects were four EFL students who were presenting their research proposal. An observation technique was used to retrieve the main data, which is the students’ proposal seminar presentation. Moreover, this study employed an interview technique to obtain the supporting data about factors affecting the students in utilizing code-switching. The theory about  types and factors of code-switching was used in this research to analyze the data. The results find four types of code-switching. Those four types are Intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, establishin continuity switches, and tag switching. The result also shows that several factors affect students using codeswitching, such as the real lexical need, quoting somebody else, interjection or inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors, being emphatetic about something clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. Based on the finding, all types of code-switching are found in this research, and there are only six out of ten factors found in this research.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether the use of the Students’ Team Achievement Division (STAD) method can significantly improve students’ reading comprehension skills. This research focused on five indicators of reading comprehension: vocabulary, main idea, specific information, reference, and inference. The sample of this research was class X Computer and Network Engineering at SMK Negeri 5 Gorontalo, consisting of 25 students. This research used a quantitative method, specifically a pre-experimental design with pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The instrument used was a multiple-choice objective test. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension skills after the implementation of the STAD method. This is evidenced by the difference in scores between the pre-test and post-test and further supported by hypothesis testing, in which Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. Based on the Paired Sample T-Test, if the Sig. (2-tailed) If the value is less than 0.05, it indicates that the STAD method has a significant effect. In this study, the Sig. (2-tailed) The value was 0.000, which is less than 0.05, thus proving that the STAD method effectively improves students’ reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

Vocabulary is an important foundation in English language acquisition, especially in the primary school period as an early stage of foreign language learning. However, the still dominant learning using rote memorization makes students less motivated and limited in vocabulary acquisition. Therefore, innovative strategies are needed that are fun and encourage students’ active engagement. Game-based approaches (game-based learning) are believed to be capable of increasing learning interest while strengthening recall power towards vocabulary. This community service activity was implemented at Imam Shafi’i TPQ by involving primary school students. The main media used were board games with simple vocabulary themes such as colors, numbers, and animals. The activity stage consists of initial observation, game implementation, and evaluation. Observation shows that students are still limited in basic vocabulary and lack confidence. Through board games, students learn vocabulary with a competitive, collaborative, and fun atmosphere. Activity results showed there was a significant improvement, where students who were previously only able to name 2–3 vocabularies, after playing could name 6–8 vocabularies with more confidence. Additionally, students appear more enthusiastic, active, and motivated. Thus, the use of board games proved to effectively enhance vocabulary acquisition while fostering positive attitudes towards learning English early on.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the similarities and differences in noun phrase structures between the English and Bugis languages. Using a documentation technique, the research selectively extracts data from the literature, specifically books and articles that focus on noun phrases. The researchers systematically collect and examine the data using the contrastive analysis technique. The findings reveal both similarities and differences in the form, structure and function of noun phrases between English and Bugis. Common features in both languages include numerals, demonstratives and quantifiers as modifiers preceding the noun (head), while prepositional phrases are positioned after the noun (head). Conversely, in English, articles, adjectives, possessives and ordinals precede the noun (head), whereas in Bugis they follow the noun (head). Relative clauses in English and Bugis have different structures and functions. Therefore, a contrastive analysis of noun phrases between English and Bugis proves to be very beneficial for learners, as it increases their awareness of the unique characteristics of both languages, especially in terms of their structural and functional aspects.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the application of the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can improve students' reading skills in narrative texts. The study sampled 30 students from class IX-4 of SMPN 4 Gorontalo. To collect data, a multiple-choice test was used adapted from various fairy tale stories, including "Why Frogs and Mosquitoes are Enemies," "Unhelpful Friends," "The Hungry Mouse," "The Lion and the Mouse," "A Proud Tiger," and "A Cat and a Fox." The study employed a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. Results show that the mean score of the pre-test was 14.47, while the mean score of the post-test was 19.4. The hypothesis testing revealed that tcount ≥ tlist with a value of 18.84 2.048, indicating that the research hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) technique can improve the reading skills of class IX-4 students at SMP N 4 Gorontalo.
