Abstract

The affordable price of staple materials (basic food) is one of the conditions in order for the wheels of the economy run smoothly on food can meet the needs of the community. However, the price of basic commodities in traditional markets is not always same each others, its depends on the location of the markets. This research was conducted by census in five traditional market in Jakarta to figure out the difference in the price of staple based on the location of its markets. The data used in the form of prices of 10 types of staple in every market. Data analysis was performed with statistical program as known as SPSS version 22 by using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the price of the staple in the market is stable and not very influential on the ability of purchasing power despite the location investigated is different. Expected from this research, the society remained traditional market shopping.

Abstract

Teaching English (TOEFL) to a class of 50 students or more is a difficult task for a lecturer. Some problems will occur, for example, the improbability for all students to get equal teacher’s attention and equal chance for learning and studying in class. To overcome these problems, the writer conducts a quasi-experimental research involving 100 students in her two classes in Bina Nusantara University. In this research, the writer applies the group presentation method for teaching TOEFL for one semester. The research shows that group scores are slightly higher than individual students’ scores.Keywords:

Abstract

This research intended to compare the translations of lexical collocations found in the abstract section of students’ theses. The purposes were to find out the errors in translating lexical collocation either by Google Translate or student translator. The data were taken from twenty working papers of English Literature students at Binus University. The abstracts of these theses (in English and Indonesian) were then processed with Google Translate. Thus, there were four sets of data to analyze: (1) Students’ Text in Indonesian (STI), (2) Google Translate of STI in English (GTE), (3) Students’ Text in English (STE), and (4) Google Translate of STE in Indonesian (GTI). From the data, samples of collocations were taken and categorized based on Hill’s classification of lexical collocations. The lexical collocations found in the four sets of data were scrutinized, compared, and analyzed to find the errors in forms and meaning as well as in the translation. The results reveal that errors in translating collocations are mostly made by Google Translate rather than the students. This research implies that Google Translate still needs improvement in translating collocations, but it is also possible that translation errors occur because of students’ misuse of collocation.

Abstract

The research aimed to find out the influencing factors that caused the characters and the narrator in the novel ‘The Architecture of Love’ to do code-switching and discover how the social relation between the characters and the narrator affected the use of code-switching. Novels written by bilingual authors were frequently used as objects of analysis in code-switching research. However, most research only focused on the code-switching performed by the characters in the novels. Rarely had the attention been given to the authors or the narrators of the story. A descriptive text analysis method and library research were used to analyze the dialogues and narratives found in this novel. Results show that the reasons for most of the code switch used in the dialogues and narratives are the intentions of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutors and when talking about a particular topic. The social relation of the character shows that they treat each other as friends that have equal social status. A similar relation is also found between the writer and the readers. It can be implied that the social relation between the characters does affect the use of code-switching.

Abstract

Translating Indonesian reduplications into English is not an easy matter due to the difference in morphological form, syntactic function and semantic meaning of reduplications in both languages. For example, the phrase ‘jauh-jauh hari’ cannot be translated into ‘far-far day’. This translation is not acceptable since it follows exactly the form of the original text, or only focusing on the morphological form, while the other two factors are disregarded. Thus, in assessing the acceptability of the translation, those three factors should be considered. However, the acceptability of the translation can also be checked by comparing the translations with the corpus. This article analyzes the translations of 3 Indonesian reduplications by 50 university students and compares their translations with similar expressions found in COCA and BNC to find out the degree of acceptability of the translations. The results show which translations are acceptable and which are not based on the frequency of usage.

Abstract

The pattern of interaction between the teacher and the students will determine the students’ uptake (i.e. the students’ incorporating correction into an utterance of their own). This paper examines the type of teacher-student interaction which will likely trigger the students’ uptake. The data was taken from the recordings of 10 non-native English lessons at university level and different types of subjects (literature, grammar, discourse, semantics, and classroom management). 500 minutes of lessons were transcribed and 50 focus on form episodes were chosen to be analyzed. The study revealed that the dominant type of interaction was reactive focus on form which was followed by metalinguistic feedback.

Abstract

The tenet of good translation is to achieve idiomatic equivalence. However, when the translation work is going to be published, there should be some adjustments, either lexical or structural. The reasons for adjustment might be various: for politeness, conciseness, etc.  This article discusses the translation adjustments of a Chinese philosophical book: The Sayings of Zhuang Zi by comparing the original translation by the translator with the published book which has been edited by publisher’s editor.  The objectives of this study are to find different types of translation adjustment made by the editor and to analyze the possible reasons for the adjustment.

Abstract

Multimodal inputs (both auditory and visual) in the forms of films and videos have long been used in teaching EFL listening comprehension. Previous studies have shown that listening while watching videos can significantly aid students’ comprehension. However, videos were rarely used as testing materials since they contained more than aural input so they did not ‘really’ test listening. This study explored the extent to which multimodal testing materials can be used in testing listening comprehension for EFL students and how the results would differ from that of mono modality testing materials. The participants were 100 students of the English Department, Bina Nusantara University (henceforth Binus) University Jakarta. The researchers gave them two kinds of tests: the video listening test (VLT) and audio listening test (ALT). The materials were two short videos from YouTube. The first test, ALT was given after the participants listened to the videos twice. On the contrary, VLT was administered after they watched the videos twice. To examine the differences in the effects of VLT or ALT on EFL students’ performance in listening comprehension, the data were analyzed quantitatively. The results indicate that students got better scores for VLT compared to ALT. The findings imply that students’ performance in listening comprehension is significantly improved with multimodal testing materials

Abstract

Home-scale business or doing business from home by family members is one choice to sustain people’s economy during the covid pandemic. With the advance of digital technologies, these home-scale businesses should be performed through digital platforms or social media. With proper utilisation, social media can increase the profits of these businesses. The purpose of this article is to analyse how social media can generate profit for small scale businesses. The data were obtained from the sales reports of three home-scale businesses in Jakarta, which specialized in selling traditional snacks. From the data, we analyzed the profit earned from each of the social media used (Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Word of Mouth) to find out which media generated the most profit for their business. We found that the highest profit for home scale business came from Instagram because promotion through Instagram resulted in the highest number of items sold. The findings signify that using the right social media can generate maximum profit. However, the use of social media as digital marketing tool should depend on the habits and control of the business owner over the media.

Abstract

British English has several regional varieties for almost every English county, e.g. Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cornwall, and so on. Each dialect can be distinguished by distinct vocabularies and pronunciation; for example the Cockney dialect use the glottal stop [?] instead of alveolar stop [t] in words like butter and bitter, so they are pronounced as [bΛ?ər] and [bɪ?ər]. These distinctive dialects’ pronunciation can be identified easily in spoken interaction, but it would be more problematic if it was represented in written text, such as in a novel. This paper attempts to analyse the distinguishing features of six intra-national varieties of British English found in the detective novel ‘Troubled Blood’ by Robert Galbraith, which is a pseudonym of J.K. Rowlings. The data for this study were taken from the speech samples of six characters from six regional dialects: Irish, Cornish, Scottish, Cockney, Eastender, and Essex. The speech samples data were extracted from the chapters in which the detective (Strike) or her partner (Robin) conversed with the chosen characters whose language backgrounds were stated clearly in the novel. The data were analysed by transcribing the speech samples phonetically, then from the transcriptions, phonetic features of each regional variation were identified using the theories of sociophonetic and regional variations. The interpretation of the sounds was based on the standard British English pronunciation. Results showed that a woman with East End dialect had some characteristics such as omission of initial h-sound, as in ‘appens, ‘ad, ‘eadaches, while a Scottish dialect was identified by the use of ‘havenae’ for ‘have not’. These results indicate that regional dialects or variations can be represented accurately in written text. Yet, it also suggests that the writer should have ample knowledge of each dialect to be able to represent distinctive variations in their writing.  AbstrakBahasa Inggris British memiliki beberapa variasi regional untuk hampir setiap wilayah Inggris, misalnya Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cornwall, dan sebagainya. Setiap dialek dapat dibedakan dengan kosakata dan pengucapan yang berbeda; misalnya dialek Cockney menggunakan glottal stop [?] alih-alih alveolar stop [t] dalam kata-kata seperti ‘butter’ dan ‘bitter’ sehingga diucapkan sebagai [bΛ?ər] dan [bɪ?ər]. Pengucapan dialek yang khas ini dapat diidentifikasi dengan mudah dalam interaksi lisan, tetapi akan lebih bermasalah jika direpresentasikan dalam teks tertulis, seperti dalam novel. Makalah ini mencoba menganalisis ciri-ciri pembeda dari enam dialek intra nasional Bahasa Inggris British yang ditemukan dalam novel detektif 'Troubled Blood' karya Robert Galbraith, yang merupakan nama samaran dari J.K. Rowling. Data untuk penelitian ini diambil dari sampel tuturan enam karakter dari enam dialek daerah: Irlandia, Cornish, Skotlandia, Cockney, Eastender, dan Essex. Data sampel ujaran diambil dari bab-bab di mana detektif (Strike) atau pasangannya (Robin) berbicara dengan karakter terpilih yang latar belakang bahasanya disebutkan dengan jelas dalam novel. Data dianalisis dengan mentranskripsikan sampel ujaran secara fonetis, kemudian dari transkripsi tersebut diidentifikasi ciri-ciri fonetik masing-masing variasi regional dengan menggunakan teori sosiofonetik dan variasi regional. Penafsiran suara didasarkan pada pengucapan bahasa Inggris standar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa seorang wanita dengan dialek East End memiliki beberapa karakteristik seperti penghilangan bunyi h awal, seperti pada 'appens, 'ad, 'eadaches, sedangkan dialek Skotlandia diidentifikasi dengan penggunaan 'havenae' untuk 'have not' . Hasil ini menunjukkan bahwa dialek atau variasi daerah dapat direpresentasikan secara akurat dalam teks tertulis. Namun, hal itu juga mensyaratkan bahwa penulis harus memiliki pengetahuan yang cukup tentang setiap dialek untuk dapat mewakili variasi yang berbeda dalam tulisan mereka
