Abstract

This paper presents the significant improvement of Direct Torque Control (DTC) of 3-phases induction machine using a Cascaded H-Bidge Multilevel Inverter (CHMI). The largest torque ripple and variable switching frequency are known as the major problem founded in DTC of induction motor. As a result, it can diminish the performance induction motor control. Therefore, the conventional 2-level inverter has been replaced with CHMI the in order to increase the performance of the motor either in dynamic or steady-state condition. By using the multilevel inverter, it can produce a more selection of the voltage vectors. Besides that, it can minimize the torque ripple output as well as increase the efficiency by reducing the switching frequency of the inverter. The simulation model of the proposed method has been developed and tested by using Matlab software. Its improvements were also verified via experimental results.

Abstract

Three-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter allows the configuration of switching devices to operate at high voltage and produce lower current/voltage harmonics. It is known that, DTC of induction machine which employs hysteresis controller has major drawbacks namely larger torque ripple and variable switching frequency. This paper aims to propose a suitable voltage vector selection to provide better torque regulation and lower switching frequency by employing DTC with 3-level NPC multilevel inverter. A simple switching strategy was formulated using 7-level torque hysteresis and 2-level flux hysteresis controllers to give more options in selecting an appropriate voltage vector, inherently, according the motor operation conditions. Abstract

This paper presents a proposed technique of virtual-flux direct power control (VF-DPC) as the improvement in control method from the basic of conventional direct power control (DPC) for front-end three-phase pulse width modulated (PWM) in ac-dc converter. Three sensors in order to measure the three phase input voltage have been eliminated in the proposed method of virtual flux (VF) regarding from the estimation technique. Theoritical principles of VF-DPC are discussed in this paper. The steady-state performance of VF-DPC and conventional DPC are evaluated and presented in this work to estinguish for the excellent performance. It is shown that the VF-DPC exhibits the several advantages, particularly in providing low total harmonic distortion with almost sinusoudal of input current and unity power factor (pf) operation under balanced three phase voltage supply. The simulation results from both methods through Matlab simulation have demonstrated the outstanding performance of the new proposed control technique from VF-DPC.

Abstract

Basically, the direct torque control (DTC) drive system is operated at light load. At light load, supplying the drive system with rated flux will decrease the efficiency of the system. To maximize the efficiency of drive system, an optimal flux has been applied during steady-state but when a torque is suddenly needed, for example during acceleration, the dynamic of the torque response would be degraded. Therefore, a modification to the voltage vector as well as look-up table has been proposed for the torque response improvement. The proposed voltage vector is generated by adding two adjacent conventional voltage vectors and implemented by using duty ratio. The duty ratio is used to estimate the activation time of each conventional voltage vector in order to produce the proposed voltage vector.

Abstract

Alternating current (AC) electrical drives mainly require smaller current (or torque) ripples and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) of voltage for excellent drive performances. Normally, in practice, to achieve these requirements, the inverter needs to be operated at high switching frequency. By operating at high switching frequency, the size of filter can be reduced. However, the inverter which oftenly employs insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) for high power applications cannot be operated at high switching frequency. This is because, the IGBT switching frequency cannot be operated above 50 kHz due to its thermal restrictions. This paper proposes an alternate switching strategy to enable the use of IGBT for operating the inverter at high switching frequency to improve THD performances. In this strategy, each IGBT in a group of switches in the modified inverter circuit will operate the switching frequency at one-fourth of the inverter switching frequency. The alternate switching is implemented using simple analog and digital integrated circuits.

Abstract

This paper presents a design and development of 8/6 switched reluctance motor for small electric vehicle using analytical method. The absent of permanent magnet, inherent fault tolerance capabilities, simple and robust construction make this motor become more attractive for small electric vehicle application such as electric scooter and go-kart. The switched reluctance motor is modelled using analytical formula in designing process. Later, the designed model is analyzed using ANSYS RMxprt software. In order to achieve 5kW power rating and to match with the design requirement, the switched reluctance motor model has been analyzed using RMxprt tools for the preliminary parameters design process. This tools is able to predict the output performance of motor in term of speed, flux linkage characteristic, output torque and efficiency.

Abstract

Direct Torque Control (DTC) of induction machine has received wide acceptance in many adjustable speed drive applications due to its simplicity and high performance torque control. However, the DTC using a common two-level inverter poses two major problems such as higher switching frequency (or power loss) and larger torque ripple. These problems are due to inappropriate voltage vectors which are selected among a limited number of voltage vectors available in two-level inverter. The proposed research aims to formulate an optimal switching strategy using Dual-Inverter Supplied Drive for high performances of DTC. By using dual-inverter supplied, it provides greater number of voltage vectors which can offer more options to select the most appropriate voltage vectors. The most appropriate voltage vectors should able to produce minimum torque slope but sufficient to satisfy torque demands. The identification is accomplished by using an equation of rate of change of torque which is derived from the induction machine equations. The proposed strategy also introduces a block of modification of torque error status which is responsible to modify the status such that it can determine the most optimal voltage vectors from a look-up table, according to motor operating conditions. The improvements obtained are as follows; 1) minimization of switching frequency (reduce power loss), and 2) reduction of torque ripple. Some improvements obtained in the proposed strategy were verified via experimentations.

Abstract

Space vector modulation (SVM) has received wide acceptance due to many benefits over other techniques such as higher output voltages, lower total harmonic distortion (THD), high-efficiency and flexible to be implemented in vector control systems. In digital implementation, the SVM equations can be optimally computed by eliminate the use of complex forms. In this paper, the simple SVM based on two-level inverter is employed for higher levels of inverters. This is to retain the simplicity of SVM computation for three-level and five-level cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHMI). Moreover, the proposed method utilizes two controller boards to perform high computational workloads and to eliminate glitch and error problems. Experiment results show that the THD of output voltage in five-level CHMI gives the smallest value among the results obtained from other levels.

Abstract

Significant to a major pollution contributor in passenger vehicles, electric vehicles are more acceptable to use on the road. Electric Vehicles (EVs) burn energy based on the usage of the battery. The usage of the battery in EVs is monitored and controlled by Battery Management System (BMS). A few factors monitor and control Battery Management System (BMS). Abstract

Induction motor (IM) drives have received a strong interest from researchers and industry particularly for high-performance AC drives through vector control method. With the advancement in power electronics and digital signal processing(DSP), high capability processors allow the implementation of advanced control techniques for motor drives such as model predictive control (MPC). In this paper, design, analysis and investigation of two different MPC techniques applied to IM drives; themodel predictive torque control (MPTC) and model predictive current control (MPCC) are presented. The two techniques are designed in Matlab/Simulink environment and compared interm of operation in different operating conditions. Moreover, a comparisonof these techniques with field-oriented control (FOC) and direct torque control (DTC) is conducted based on simulation studies with PI speed controller for all control techniques. Based on the analysis, the MPC techniques demonstrates a better result compared with the FOC and DTC in terms of speed, torque and current responses in transient and steady-state conditions.
