Abstract

Rural agroindustry can absorb a relatively high labor rate, but the added value of the products is very low, resulting in low labor productivity. This research aims at describing the process of sugarcane into brown sugar and analyzing the added value of brown sugar agroindustry as well as its distribution in Bukik Batabuah Village, Canduang Agam Sub-district. The data were collected from six brown sugar processing home industries. This research found that there were three kinds of brown sugar namely saka kariang, saka gatah kuniang and saka gatah merah, which were only different in the time of cooking, storage process of tengguli, and heating of tengguli on saka gatah processing. These made the three types of brown sugar have different texture, taste, color and price. From their added value, saka kariang and saka gatah kuniang were classified as medium products, while saka gatah merah was classified as a low product. In addition, this research reveals that the smallest added value distribution was received by paid labors. Based on the findings, the following suggestions are recommended: (1) the brown sugar business should focus on developing a business of saka kariang processing; and (2) the added value of brown sugar could be enhanced by the use of effective and efficient production machinery, so that the added value distributed to the brown sugar agroindustry could be improved

Abstract

The global community recognizes social forestry as a way to improve community welfare through sustainable forest programs. In Indonesia, this program aims to involve local communities in forest management, providing multiple benefits such as forest preservation, improved livelihoods, and poverty reduction. This study aims to analyze the sustainability of a social forestry program for both Community Forest (CF) and non-Community Forest (non-CF) schemes (Village Forests and Community Plantation Forests). The research was conducted in Sijunjung, Solok, Padang Pariaman Regencies, and Padang City, involving a sample of 33 CF participants and 65 non-CF participants selected through snowball sampling. The data were collected through direct interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) at provincial and regency levels. The business sustainability assessment utilized multidimensional indicators (MDS) across three dimensions: economic, social, and institutional and analyzed using Rap_MForest. The findings revealed that social forestry program had a moderate level of sustainability in all dimensions; however, the social dimension showed lower sustainability, owing to limited community participation and ineffective empowerment of non-group members. The sustainability index of CF scheme was higher than the non-CF (VF and CPF). The CF model emerged as the more adaptable and comprehensive approach, promoting both environmental conservation and socioeconomic development. Therefore, prioritizing the institutional strengthening of VF and CPF became crucial. In addition, enhancing the active role and involvement of group members in the social forestry program within the social dimension was also essential. To enhance sustainability, efforts should be focused on strengthening mentoring and counseling programs for social forestry groups involved in state forest and community plantation initiatives.

Abstract

Implementing Community-Based Tourism (CBT) can create employment opportunities and enhance regional competitiveness. Economic, social, and environmental conflicts sometimes follow the success of CBT. Social networks can drive the success of CBT, reduce conflict, and promote tourism sustainability. This study aims to analyze social networks to strengthen rural tourism. The research was carried out in the Carocok Tourism destination, a leading Pesisir Selatan Regency tourism destination—data collection through observation and FGD with five experts. Primary data were collected from 39 business units that were selected purposively. The variables observed were tourism asset ownership, asset control, capacity, and benefits. The data was analyzed using the Social network analysis (SNA) approach with Nvivo 12 plus and Gephi 0.9.5 software. The study's findings show that the social network pattern in the Carocok mirrors a triple helix model. This model involves three key stakeholders: the government, the community, and the private sector. Tourism management resembles community-based tourism as it emphasizes the community as the primary stakeholder, with the community owning 89.27% of tourism assets, a more significant share than the government and private ownership. While the community broadly owns these assets, there is still room for more robust control and improvement in the capacity of tourism labor. Conflicts were found in rural tourism activities, such as developing tourism infrastructure that impacted the ecological damage of coastal areas, privatization of public spaces, inconsistencies in tourism product tariffs, illegal levies, and misunderstandings of governance between the government and local communities. Some of the problems are related to the lack of control and capacity owned by the community in the tourism sector. The government and the private sector play significant roles in enhancing capacity building and fostering entrepreneurship. Developing tourism will require media and academic collaboration to improve tourism in the future.
