Abstract

Many scholars have studied the Covid 19 epidemic and online-based courses on English lectures using inventive good strategy mapping. Using two online platforms, this study investigated the social practices in learning English as a foreign language. The research method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive method with fifty students from two different study programs: 1) Department of Dentistry, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Mulawarman; 2) Public Administration Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of 17 Augustus 1945 Samarinda. A quantitative description was used in this study, followed by an in-depth conversation with a sample of the existing population. The study's findings provide an overview of the usage of social techniques in learning English, with the two groups of students favoring the other five tactics. This research also shows how the two groups of respondents apply various aspects of the technique. The findings of this study are expected to be valuable to teachers and curriculum creators when it comes to setting up cooperative learning online. As part of constructive learning, social strategy is one of the strategies that support our learning style. It should be treated at any English level, rather than achieving learner capacity in English through group discussion. This study should be encouraged to everyone through added study with the same previous activities.

Abstract

As a mode of expression, music video involves the process of meaning-making. Its unique method of assembling symbolic codes should be apprehended differently from films even though some film technical terms are found applicable. This research takes Taylor Swift’s music video for her song You Need to Calm Down (YNTCD) which won two MTV VMA as Video of the Year and Video for Good in 2019. Barthes’s theory of semiotics is firstly applied to scrutinize the music video which is done by answering how the denotation and connotation meaning is made to respond to these issues. Discourse analysis is then applied to study what discourses are influential in the signification system of the music video. As a response to issues of hate speech, LGBTQ, and media toxic contestation, meaning in this video is built by (1) the objects symbolizing personal experiences, (2) borrowing meaning from the iconic show, (3) cameos demonstrating social conflict, (4) stage-setting exemplifying media toxic contestation, and (5) the painting indicating historical context. Thus, the YNTCD music video symbolically voices a counter-discourse to the mentioned social problems.

Abstract

In measuring learners’ productivity in writing and speaking, there is a formulation known as syntactic and lexical complexity. This study investigates whether there is a difference in syntactic and lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings or not. This study is quantitative research which employ Web-Based Lexical Complexity Analyser and Web-Based Syntactic Complexity Analyser in order to measure data. The current study results reveal that the p-value of three sub-components of lexical complexity is lower than 0.05 (LD=0.000, LS=0.036, and LV=0.000), which means a significant difference in lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings. A similar result showed in syntactic complexity where four of five indices of comparing the syntactic complexity of two-language writings showed value <0.05. The p-value of comparing four indices of syntactic complexity such as MLS, DC/C, CP/C, and C/S is 0.006, 0.000, 0.038, and 0.002, respectively. However, the fifth indice, MLC (mean length of clause) shows a p-value >0.05, which means no significant difference between MLC of English writings and Indonesian writings. The study concluded that the students produce more lexical and syntactic complexity in their English writings than in their Indonesian writings.

Abstract

This article discussed the representation of Chinese society as portrayed in IP Man 4: The Finale movie. Furthermore, the representation of the Other towards the Chinese character using Macfie's representation theory, while Murphy's characterization theory was used to analyze the struggle waged by the Chinese society. The reasons the researcher chose this movie, because (1) IP Man 4: The Finale movie is one of the movies that have just aired in 2020, (2) no one has analyzed this movie using representation theory, and (3) also until now there are still many cases where there are still superiority and inferiority between East and West that still exist and cannot be solved. In this research, the research design used was qualitative by using a qualitative descriptive analysis approach. This research reveals that the representation of Chinese society in IP Man 4: The Finale movie is aberrant, despotic, inferior, passive, feminine, backward, and inauthentic. The findings show that the struggle of Chinese society was characterized by three significant ways, namely: The past life (the character's past story), the character's speech (conversation and mind), and mannerism (reaction or action). By looking at representation theory, we can understand that the term oriental culture aims to prevent the East from not getting a negative connotation. This term is not a justification for blaming something that inaccurate statement, but rather an effort to keep the Eastern nation honorable and dignified.

Abstract

Heritage language is a language taught and learned from parents. It was integrated from generation to generation. In Kalimantan, heritage languages are very various and has developed due to many influences from internal and external factors. This research aims (1) to describe how students perceive the languages(s) they acquired, learned, and used and (2) to describe their use and perceptions on heritage languages maintenance. This research was a qualitative statistic. In collecting data, the researcher employed interview, questionnaire, and observation. In analyzing data, the researcher relied on Miles and Huberman model for qualitative data and statistic formulas for quantitative data. Based on the findings, it was found that (1) students perceive the languages they acquired, learned, and used in specific ways from the three languages mastered, such as involving in a language community, communicating with family members, friends, including learning from TV or film, and (2) students feel happy to use their HL to communicate with people with different backgrounds and show their identities. Therefore, it can be concluded that students acquire, learn, and use their languages into various ways, while maintaining those languages, they tend to involve in a language community and family members. Indeed, students from various ethnic backgrounds can make the learning process meaningful by knowing many local languages and cultures in a classroom.

Abstract

American and British English variations in Indonesia are mostly known in society and schools. However, the two variations, including others, have not been taught specifically in schools. This current case study discusses English variations in ELT (English language teaching) by involving two senior high schools in rural areas of North Kalimantan, Indonesia, viewed from students’ perspectives. There are two aims of conducting this current research, namely: (1) to identify students’ perceptions of English variations used in learning English at senior high schools and (2) to analyze English variations taught by their English teachers. To collect data, questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis were employed. To analyze data, the interactive analytical model and the statistical formula were employed. Based on the findings, it was found that (1) American English is mostly known among students to speak, and (2) English teachers endorse several kinds of English variations to students. In addition, the teachers still speak mixed English-Indonesian language when explaining materials in the classes. It can be concluded that students in the rural areas of North Kalimantan have been endorsed by several kinds of English variations (mainly American and British English). Yet, the students have not known how to distinguish those variations and when to use them in conversations.

Abstract

Lexical diversity is one of the language tools to measure varied words or vocabulary produced by learners in a text both spoken and written. This research aims to investigate the lexical diversity of children narratives produced by children orally. The research design of this research was a case study supported by quantitative data. Meanwhile, the subjects of this research are seven children around 6-9 years old. In collecting data, the researchers employed narrative storytelling based on a picture which is drawn by the subjects. In analyzing data, TTR (Type-Token -Ratio) was used to measure the lexical diversity gained from the subject while the theory was used to explain the phenomena. Based on the findings, it is found that (1) older children have higher lexical diversity than the younger ones, (2) younger children produced higher lexical frequency (word tokens) than the older ones (3) individual variations caused an anomaly of the result in which older children were expected to have higher lexical frequency but the result showed the reverse. Keywords: Lexical Diversity, Children, Oral Narratives, Case Study.
