Abstract

Until recent decades, the effort on diminishing students’ feeling of anxiety and less self-efficacy toward the writing activities in academic writing course still becomes a great concern for the teachers or practitioners of writing skill especially when dealing with students from multilingual society. These students, who learn English as a foreign language, often demonstrate the influence of their first language when composing a writing, even in a simple paragraph. Facing this situation, the teachers are forced to give attention more to students’ grammatical composition, and as a result of this most of the students give excessive attention only to revise the grammatical mistakes. Based on this situation, they develop “mental block” towards writing and have less interest in writing. To deal with this situation, many studies suggest that teachers need to foster students’ motivation since it is as crucial as developing students’ writing skills through practice. Hence, this paper aims to describe the effectiveness of giving journal writing task and providing comments to students’ writing in the task as a simple but useful way to ignite students’ motivation in writing. The object of the research is the students of academic writing course in Faculty of Cultural Studies of Mulawarman University Samarinda. List of questions were given to the students after they experienced the task to figure out how much the task and the comments influence students’ motivation in writing

Three steps in doing this research are stated. Firstly, prepare the data which consists of data collection. Data collection is done by a method named ‘simak’. Simak’s method is carried out by using Simak Bebas Libat Cakap technique (SBLC) in which it is done by recording and then transcribing. Conversational classification is based on the use of apologizing strategies by Al-A’la students. Secondly is data analysis by using the method of Padan Pragmatics to know apologizing acts from speaker to hearer. Abstract

In measuring learners’ productivity in writing and speaking, there is a formulation known as syntactic and lexical complexity. This study investigates whether there is a difference in syntactic and lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings or not. This study is quantitative research which employ Web-Based Lexical Complexity Analyser and Web-Based Syntactic Complexity Analyser in order to measure data. The current study results reveal that the p-value of three sub-components of lexical complexity is lower than 0.05 (LD=0.000, LS=0.036, and LV=0.000), which means a significant difference in lexical complexity between L1 and L2 writings. A similar result showed in syntactic complexity where four of five indices of comparing the syntactic complexity of two-language writings showed value <0.05. The p-value of comparing four indices of syntactic complexity such as MLS, DC/C, CP/C, and C/S is 0.006, 0.000, 0.038, and 0.002, respectively. However, the fifth indice, MLC (mean length of clause) shows a p-value >0.05, which means no significant difference between MLC of English writings and Indonesian writings. The study concluded that the students produce more lexical and syntactic complexity in their English writings than in their Indonesian writings.

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the errors of speech production in Dory’s utterances of Finding Dory movie. The theory used to find out the errors of Dory’s speech production was Levelt’s model of speech production (1999): conceptualisation, formulation, articulation, and self-monitoring. Words in the form of dialogues (Dory’s utterances when her short-term memory loss appeared only) were the data in this study. The research design of this study was qualitative.  The results showed the errors of speech production in Dory’s utterances were identified into five types such as words substitution, contradictory utterance, similar words rhyming, incomplete utterances, and hesitation utterance. The most affected stage by Dory’s short-term memory loss was conceptualisation. It was because during the times when short-term memory loss appeared, Dory realised that her disorder infiltrating the stage that made her to be unsatisfied and as the result, she retracted and performed her utterances from the beginning many times. Therefore, this study concluded the errors that Dory produced in her speech production were all caused by the interference of short-term memory loss.
