Abstract The community service that has been done is aimed to give an idea and understanding of the importance of English mastery and provide motivation for the participants in relation to English mastery. Furthermore, it is done in order to make the students easy to understand English, especially on basic materials with English learning methods that are related to students of SMK level using the concept of English for Specific Purpose (ESP) so that later students are able to do the English Language Test of National Examination well. The community service undertaken aims to provide training to the teachers at Handayani Senior High School about the importance of producing quality scientific papers. Specifically, this training provides the opportunity for participants to practice directly how to write scientific papers using Mendeley software for reference used in the paper. Mendeley is a computer and web program developed by Elsevier to manage and share research papers, search for research data, and work together online. Posts made with Microsoft Word, Open Office or LaTex can be linked to Mendeley software so that citations and reference lists (bibliography) can be arranged automatically. To achieve the goals and targets of this community service activity (PPM), the implementers use the lecture, discussion and practicum methods so that the trainees can easily understand the material provided in the training. The activities carried out involve the teachers at Handayani Pekanbaru Senior High School as participants. The response from the participants is positive which can be seen from their active participation during the activity. They also find the training really useful to help them become more productive teachers by writing more scientific papers using Mendeley. Keywords: Community Service, Scientific Paper, Reference, Mendeley Abstract Pengabdian pada masyarakat yang dilakukan bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan kepada para guru SMA Handayani Pekanbaru akan pentingnya menghasilkan karya tulis ilmiah yang berkualitas. Secara specifik, pelatihan ini memberikan kesempatan kepada para peserta untuk praktek langsung bagaimana menulis karya ilmiah dengan menggunakan software mendeley untuk referensi rujukan yang di gunakan dalam karya tulis. Mendeley merupakan program komputer dan web yang dikembangkan Elsevier untuk mengelola dan berbagi makalah penelitian, mencari data penelitian, dan bekerja sama secara daring. Tulisan yang dibuat dengan Microsoft Word, Open Office atau LaTex bisa dihubungkan dengan software Mendeley sehingga sitasi dan daftar referensi (bibliography) bisa disusun secara otomatis. Untuk mencapai tujuan dan target dari kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat (PPM) ini, maka pelaksana menggunakan metode ceramah, diskusi, dan praktikum agar peserta pelatihan dapat mudah memahami materi yang diberikan pada pelatihan tersebut. Kegiatan yang dilaksanakan diikuti oleh para guru di SMA Handayani Pekanbaru. Peserta merespon kegiatan ini dengan sangat positif yang bisa dilihat dari keaktifan mereka selama kegiatan berlangsung. Lebih jauh mereka merasa pelatihan sangat berguna dalam membantu mereka menjadi guru yang lebih produktif untuk menulis lebih banyak karya ilmiah menggunakan aplikasi Mendeley.

Community service carried out at the Fajar Harapan Orphanage in Pekanbaru City aims to provide counseling in increasing learning interest in the orphanage of the Fajar Harapan orphanage. The main problems faced are the low learning interest of children in orphanages, low interest in learning and a less conducive learning environment. The low interest in learning of children at the Fajar Harapan Orphanage has resulted in their performance decreasing in school and this is of course a problem for children and caregivers in this orphanage. To achieve the objectives of this community service activity, the lecture and discussion methods were used. In addition, an appropriate strategy is needed to foster children's learning interest in this orphanage, namely strategies to improve performance in schools, strategies to foster children's interest in learning and strategies to build a conducive learning environment. PPM activities that have been carried out take place smoothly in accordance with the expected plan. The participants of the activity responded positively and thanked the executor for providing useful knowledge to the participants, namely the strategy to foster interest in learning in order to improve learning achievement. Therefore they hope that this activity will not stop, but this activity will continue in the future.

The basic speaking training community service program which is one of the pillars in Higher Education Institution such as Universitas Muhammadiyah Riau is carried out aimed at providing an overview of the importance of knowledge about English and motivation concerning the mastery of English. This was done to make it easier for trainees to understand how certain expressions and vocabulary can be applied in international activities such as the International Youth Exchange Program, International Internships, Scholarship Interviews and so forth. Based on these objectives, the target to be achieved in this program is to provide knowledge of the participants, to develop the ability to speak English so that they can pass international programs, scholarships and continue their postgraduate degree. To achieve the goals and targets of community service activities, the implementers use lecture, discussion, think pair and share, and problem-based learning methods, so that the trainees can easily understand the material provided. The activities carried out and participated by program participants came from various University and Higher Education graduates in Riau. The training participants were very enthusiastic about participating. This was evidenced by the large number of participants who were active in the discussion and enthusiastic in taking the activities.

The community service undertaken aims to provide training to the teachers of SMPIT Madani Pekanbaru in order to increase the ability of teachers to understand the concept of material provided by presenters from various sources from seminars, workshops, FGDs or other activities, make it easier for teachers to remember the material presented and be more focused and also help teachers in compiling and processing information obtained through interesting notes so that they are easier to recall what they got in the material delivered by the presenters. To achieve the objectives of this community service (PPM) activity, the implementers used the lecture, discussion and practicum methods so that the trainees could easily understand the material provided at the training. The activities carried out were participated by the teachers at SMPIT Madani Pekanbaru. This activity is on target as evidenced by the enthusiasm of the teacher in following the entire process of activities. They are very active in discussing and interacting when given a material concept and instructing them to take notes with various Note-taking Systems. This research was aimed at knowing whether: 1) The students taught by PQRST technique have significantly higher reading comprehension on procedure text than those who are taught by QAR technique; 2) The students with high interest taught by PQRST technique have significantly higher reading comprehension on procedure text than those who are taught by QAR technique; 3) The students with low interest taught by PQRST technique have significantly higher reading comprehension on procedure text than those who are taught by QAR technique at grade VII of SMPN 2 Padang; 4) Is there any interaction between PQRST and QAR techniques with students’ interest toward reading comprehension of procedure texts? The background of doing this research was that the students got difficulties in comprehending texts namely getting problem in finding accurate information from the texts. Besides, they also had difficulty in remembering the vocabularies that have been learned to the mind. These phenomena were caused by the students’ low capability in memorizing the vocabularies got from the text and the inappropriate teaching reading techniques applied by the teachers so that these made the students’ score and interest on reading comprehension low. In this case, PQRST and QAR techniques could be applied in teaching to help the students comprehend the texts. This research was quasi-experimental research. The population of this research was the students of grade VII of SMPN 2 Padang consisting 184 students spreading in six classes. The sample of this research was taken by using intact group sampling because the students had been grouped into their classes together and taught with the same curriculum and materials, namely 30 students at experimental group (class VII.4) and 30 students as control group (class VII.1). The data of the research were collected through test (pretest and posttest), and questionnaire, and then analyzed using Chi-Square test for normality data testing, variance test for homogeneity data testing and t-test for hypothesis testing. The result of this research showed that: 1) The students taught by PQRST technique have significantly higher reading comprehension on procedure text than those who are taught by QAR technique; 2) The students with high interest taught by PQRST technique have significantly higher reading comprehension on procedure text than those who are taught by QAR technique; 3) The students with low interest taught by PQRST technique have significantly higher reading comprehension on procedure text than those who are taught by QAR technique at grade VII of SMPN 2 Padang; 4) There is an interaction between PQRST and QAR techniques with students’ interest toward reading comprehension of procedure texts. Abstract The objectives of the research were to investigate the influence of PGR technique toward student’s ability to distinguish between Gerund and Present Participle and to know the students’ ability to distinguish both of them. The researcher applied quasi experimental method and quasi experimental design (time series) O1, O2, O3, O4, O5, O6 to find the “t” value of the scores and percentage to calculate the data from the tests. The research was conducted at the third semester students of English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Educational Science Pakuan University Bogor. The researcher choose purposive sampling to take one class from 5 (five) classes and 21 (twenty one) students as the sample. The result of the research shows that there is a positive influence of PGR technique and it is proved by the “t” table of the research 4.47 which is higher than the critical value of “t” with 0.01 level of significance (2.845) and the level of 0.05 (2.086) for two tailed test. The result of the tests also shown that the students will be easier understand the difference between gerund and present participle by PGR technique. This study aimed to determine what difficulties faced by the students at SMP Negeri 2 Padang in transactional and interpersonal conversations, namely difficulties in using grammatical competence and sociolinguistic competence. In this study, researchers chose the second-year students of SMP Negeri 2 Padang as the population. The samples in this study were students of class VIII.4, consisting of 36 students based on cluster sampling techniques. The instruments used were observation and interview. The researchers observed some difficulties that happened when the students created transactional and interpersonal conversations with their partners in front of the class using an observation checklist. After making observations, researchers interviewed the students to find out the causes of these difficulties. From the observations, the researchers found that 55.65% of students had difficulties in using grammatical competence, namely in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. 66.67% of students have difficulties in using sociolinguistic competence (the use of speech acts). Based on the results of the interview, it was found that the factors that caused students to have difficulties in using grammatical competence were lack of grammatical knowledge due to lack of practice, lack of classroom management control by the teacher so that noisy classes made students pay less attention to the teacher's explanation when explaining the lesson. The teacher also did not give motivation to students to review the lessons that have been taught so that they rarely relearned at home. In addition, many teachers used English so students did not understand what the teacher said. Another factors were rush, forgetfulness, carelessness, nervousness, hesitation, and inattentiveness. The factors that caused students to have difficulties in using sociolinguistic competence were the lack of knowledge of using speech acts, forgetting, and not knowing what the other person said. Thus, it could be concluded that the students of SMPN 2 Padang have difficulties in transactional and interpersonal conversations, namely difficulties in using grammatical competence and sociolinguistic competence. This research is intended to elaborate and analyze satire and absurdity in Edward Albee’s The American Dream. This research is also intended to relate the satires and absurdity to the reality of life in America in the late of 1950’s. This research is conducted through a method of library research by analyzing the play and relating to other supporting references. This research is conducted in the frame of literary studies by applying the mimetic approach. The result of the research shows that the play contains satires and absurdity. The satires are directed to American progress, artificial value, alienation, and women’s domination. The absurdity in the play is found in the conventions of pure theater, clowning, fooling, and mad-scene, verbal nonsense, and allegorical element. Both satire and absurdity in the play portray the reality of life in America during the Cold War period.

Teaching English at Indonesian special senior high schools is applied based on the curriculum determined by the government. However, there were some problems found in English language teaching for visually impaired students especially in writing. This research aimed to investigate the teachers’ challenges in teaching English writing for visually impaired students. The respondents were taken purposively, namely the English teachers at Indonesian special senior high schools for visually impaired students namely SLB Sri Mujinab, SLB Negeri Pembina and SLB Kasih Ibu. The data for the research were collected from semi-structured interview conducted to get specific information about what challenges encountered by the English teachers teaching writing skills for students with visual impairment. The challenges encountered by the teachers in teaching writing were inappropriateness of curriculum and syllabus with the students’ need, time constraint of teaching, lack of learning media, lack of teaching strategy, inappropriateness of teacher’s qualification, and students’ attitude problem.
