Abstract

Abstract

The Indonesian Ulema Council (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI) is a clerical institution tasked with issuing fatwas. On the one hand, these fatwa products can occasionally help Muslims with their internal issues, but on the other, MUI fatwa products serve as a vehicle for some groups to justify intolerable behavior. This article is included in the study of Islamic thought using a digital sociology perspective. Research information was found by looking up MUI fatwas in a number of incidents that had an effect on society in Internet news publications. According to this study, the virtual community (netizens) prefer Ustaz who is popular on social media over Ustaz from a variety of established religious organizations. The results of this study show that the MUI authority must prioritize setting and social impact when packaging fatwas. MUI fatwa products should be disseminated through social media platforms (Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter). Its function is to target a wider congregation so that their understanding of Islam is in accordance with the objectives of the Shari‘a (maqasid al-shari‘ah). In addition, the packaging of fatwas is needed so that religious texts are understood more easily but do not eliminate the legal substance and socio-cultural considerations in a heterogeneous society.

Abstract

Conflicts and sentiments between religions in Indonesia have yet to be fully resolved convincingly. This is because many parties still use their beliefs to mobilize interests. Recognizing this phenomenon, this article seeks to examine and analyze the experiences carried out by the Soko Tunggal Islamic Boarding School in mitigating conflict through an inter-religious approach in the praxis of Islamic Religious education. Through qualitative research methods, data were obtained through interviews, observation, and documentation of important data in the field, which in the following stages were analyzed using a multidisciplinary perspective. This study found that the inter-religious approach in the context of Islamic education was carried out to minimize the potential for inter-religious conflict. Through the involvement of religious figures, interfaith dialogue does not want to make Islam a syncretic religion. Through this approach, Islamic education is articulated not only in exclusive-primordial academic activities. But it also opens up space for intellectual awareness that Muslims are an integral part as citizens of the world who are entrusted with maintaining social harmony based on divine, human, and national values.

Abstract

Religion has two inherent characteristics. It will be transcendent if it is expressed as servitude to God. However, it becomes profane when articulated into fellow human beings' lives. Thus, religion cannot be separated from the influence of the culture in which humans exist. Through an intercultural theological approach, this study intends to show the thoughts of Kiai Hashim Asyari, who can integrate Sunni theological discourses relevant to Indonesian society's culture without reducing the fundamental values of faith. This study argues that Kiai Hashim's view of theological discourse can be introduced as the idea of "local theology." Adopting the historical research method of critical thinking and the approach of intercultural studies revealed that the concept of intercultural theology in Kiai Hashim's thought is a strategy to contextualize Islam. Its relevance in Indonesia, Islamic theology has been successfully articulated not only limited to ritual sacraments but also appreciative of local elements, as well as contributing to developing a spirit of nationalism. The style of theology shown by Kiai Hashim can be seen as genuine, bearing in mind that theological discourse tends to be exclusive, which must follow its origins complete with cultural and social settings without considering the existing local character. With this religious style, its adherents can be contextual and relevant.

Abstract

To achieve learning objectives, the enthusiasm of students has an existence that cannot be negotiated, its nature is inherent. This is because the learning process requires awareness and mental readiness that requires a desire or encouragement to learn. In practice, factually, in Islamic religious education, learners from non-Muslim families and converts have its challenges. This reality can be found as is the case in SMAN 16 and SMAN 17 Surabaya city. This study aims to identify the characteristics of learning motivation through the approach of learning psychology. Researchers conduct interviews and in-depth observations in natural setting situations through qualitative research methods with a case study approach. This method aims to describe, analyze phenomena, events, social activities, attitudes, perceptions, and thoughts of individual people. The study found that: First, the problem in the motivation of learning Islamic Education, both mualaf and non-Muslim family students concerning psychic aspects, methods of spending and materials that are too "overdosed" for the size of beginners. Problems like this, can be minimized if the teacher correctly understands the learners' characteristics, plans a mature learning, and uses fun media. Second, the problem of learning motivation in Islamic Education, which includes extrinsic and intrinsic aspects, can be overcome if the teacher acts not only as a conveyor of knowledge but also as a source of inspiration and motivation. Thus, teachers can become trendsetters of science, morality, and inspiration for their students. Increased learning motivation is therefore, not only packaged for “how to know” but also “how to do and feel.”

Abstract

This article documents the metaphysical reflections in suicide bombing behavior and the challenges for Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in Indonesia. Through library research using content analysis as the analytical method, several findings are produced. It is found that the factors driving suicide bombing behavior in Indonesia include ideological, cultural, socio-economic, geographic, shallow religious understanding, disappointment towards authorities, injustice, and geographical factors. Ideological factors occupy a dominant position when supported by other factors. The metaphysical meaning in suicide bombing behavior can be approached through "metaphysics of relational and substantial substances". The relational substance includes "The One and the Many"; "The Permanent and the Changing"; "The Transcendent and the Immanent". Suicide bombing behavior is based on individual or group actions, all grounded in a belief directed towards The One. The mode of suicide bombing behavior can also change, but it remains destructive. The belief in carrying out God's command represents a transcendent spiritual value, while the bomb explosions planned by organized groups carry an immanent value. From the perspective of substantialistic metaphysics (autonomy and static), suicide bombing behavior places violence as the most fundamental and widespread layer (autonomous), independent and constant (static) reality. Radical ideologies, extremism, fundamentalism, exclusivism, militancy contribute to suicide bombing behavior. This poses a particular challenge for Islamic Religious Education (PAI). The construction of PAI materials must be tolerant, moderate, anti-radicalism, and counter-terrorism. PAI should be built based on the teachings of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy for all creations).

Abstract

Chinese Muslims have a cultural identity as a double minority. In Islam, they are a minority within their ethnic religion and remain a minority among other ethnic groups in Indonesia. This ethnic group embraces Islam mostly because of religious conversion. The aspect of religious conversionmakes ethnic Chinese come to Islam. This study aims to find the expression of Muslim in Surabaya, who are using social action tools as a manifestation of their faith to gain trust from the mainstream while maintaining their cultural identity as Chinese so as not to experience alienation in their communities. This study found that Chinese Muslim’s social theology in Surabaya serves as an articulation of cosmopolitan Islam that is successfully integrated into an inclusive Chinese identity. This also confirms that being a good Muslim is not in a binary position with being a pure Chinese. Besides, the theological vision of Chinese Muslims is expressed not only by maintaining its cultural background, but also through social movements that are inspired and based on Islamic dogmatic teachings that emphasize human values.

Abstract

The question of what constitutes true happiness has been a core philosophical issue that has warranted multiple attempts in the attempt to provide a final answer, either from a purely religious or philosophical perspective. The issue of happiness is closely connected to the meaning of life and its ultimate outcome and purpose. The modern Muslim philosopher Muhammad Hossein Tabatabai discussed the nature of happiness at length. In his view, human beings instinctively strive to attain happiness or the ultimate good which can only be achieved through nearness to God. Therefore, true happiness requires the believer to commit righteous deeds and avoid sinful acts. This study follows a philosophical-Sufi approach and uses a descriptive-analytical method to examine the nature of happiness, the relationship between happiness, goodness and pleasure according to Tabatabai. In line with Islamic thought, true and lasting happiness can only be attained in the Hereafter, and happiness in this life, no matter how acutely and deeply felt, is merely a shadow of the true happiness of the believers who have attained God’s permission to enter Paradise.

Abstract

This research expands upon existing theories proposed by Zaniyati and Fathurrohman concerning educational policy integration models, examining the challenge of educational institutional dualism arising from the enactment of Law Number 20 of 2003 in Indonesia. Despite this challenge, the emergence of regional regulations aimed at integrating Islamic non-formal educational institutions (diniyah takmiliyah) with formal educational institutions presents a unique opportunity for study. This research investigates and refines the integration model between diniyah takmiliyah and formal education, specifically within the East Java Province regions of Sumenep and Pasuruan. Then, utilizing a case study methodology embedded within a political research framework, this research draws upon institutional and actor-based approaches to analyze data collected through document analysis and in-depth interviews. Data analysis adheres to the rigorous methods proposed by Miles et al., encompassing data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing stages. Findings reveal that the integration model between diniyah takmiliyah and formal educational institutions manifests as a synergistic single/cross-sector and third-party supply management model. This research contributes to the scholarly discourse by proposing the investigation of the effectiveness and a factorial analysis of these two integration models for future research endeavors.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools as traditional Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia have experienced various challenges and changes along with the times. One of the challenges faced is the emergence of a capitalistic economy which emphasizes aspects of competition, efficiency and profit orientation. This research aims to explore how Islamic boarding school-based educational institutions adapt to a capitalistic economy without sacrificing the values and basic principles of Islamic teachings. Using a qualitative approach, this research involved participant observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies at several Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. The research results show that Islamic boarding schools have implemented various adaptation strategies, such as diversifying funding sources, implementing modern management, and developing business units that are in line with Islamic values. However, Islamic boarding schools also face challenges in maintaining a balance between spiritual and economic aspects, as well as maintaining the distinctive identity and characteristics of Islamic boarding schools. This research contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of Islamic educational institutions in facing global economic changes and provides recommendations for future policy and practice.
