Abstract

This community service program was conducted at Madrasah Diniyah Thoyyibah Islamiyah, Pulau Lancang Besar, with the aim of encouraging community participation in improving the physical quality of the madrasah environment and establishing the madrasah as an incubator for local socio-economic development. This initiative represents the university's contribution to the Community Action Plan (CAP) program initiated by the Jakarta Provincial Government in 2021 on Pulau Lancang Besar. The previously implemented CAP program primarily focused on the physical aspects of environmental improvement for restructuring slum settlements, leaving socio-economic issues as a lower priority. Through this community service program, socio-economic aspects were integrated into environmental improvement efforts, with the madrasah serving as the primary driver. Participatory discussions were held with the community to design and implement programs aimed at enhancing the physical, social, and economic quality of the community, with the university acting as a partner in planning and implementation support. The program outcomes demonstrated improvements in the madrasah's physical environment, strengthened its role as a center for social and economic activities, and increased active community involvement, fostering a stronger sense of ownership and shared responsibility. The integration of physical improvements and socio-economic development has proven to contribute significantly to community development, particularly in areas with limited government support. This self-managed madrasah successfully served as an effective incubator model for social and economic transformation, although the economic impacts are not yet significantly evident.

Abstract

Kampung Susun Kunir is a vertical housing project for residents relocated from riverbank settlements in Jakarta, who face limitations in access to religious facilities. The existing prayer room (mushola) is makeshift, narrow, and inadequate in terms of capacity, comfort, and environmental sustainability. Spiritual activities such as congregational prayers, study groups, and children's religious education play a vital role in strengthening the community's social cohesion. This community service program aimed to design a permanent, contextually appropriate mosque that accommodates the needs of a dense vertical environment while actively involving residents throughout the planning process. The methodology included needs assessment surveys, site observations, focus group discussions, participatory design workshops, and design validation. The outcomes consist of a complete architectural design of the mushola, a modular prototype adaptable to limited space, a technical guide for construction and community-based management, and documentation of participatory processes. All deliverables were developed to be replicable and directly applicable by residents to fulfill the need for sustainable communal religious facilities. Furthermore, the program contributed to students' experiential learning in real-world settings, enhanced community capacity for public space planning, and strengthened collaboration among universities, local communities, and stakeholders to improve the quality of urban life.

Abstract

Strategies for Enhancing Visual Accents through Luminance Contrast Control in Semi-Outdoor Galleries Lighting is a key element in shaping the visual perception of a gallery. In the semi-outdoor gallery of Kampung Susun Kunir, daylight dominates during the daytime, while artificial lighting is not yet optimal and fails to create visual accents due to limitations in luminaire positioning on the exposed ceiling. This study aims to formulate strategies for enhancing visual accents through luminance contrast control. Simulations using DIALux were conducted to analyze luminance values and ratios, both in surrounding walls (immediate) and vertical surfaces (ambience). The results show that artificial lighting is ineffective during the day; however, interventions in the form of additional spotlights and linear spotlights at night successfully increased visual contrast across display surfaces. These findings underscore the importance of adjusting lighting to spatial conditions and serve as a foundation for developing efficient and adaptive lighting guidelines for community exhibition spaces to support artwork legibility and improve visitors’ visual experience.
