Abstract

Kata Kunci: perasaan moral, nalar, kehendak, kebebasan, kausalitas, prinsip moralAbstract: Can human action be driven by reason, including moral action? Ethical tradition since Aristotle indicated that reason can indeed drive moral action. Knowledge of good or bad will encourage people to carry out what is good and avoid doing bad things. Te reason why people do that is that because they want to be happy, and one way to achieve this is to be a moral person. However, this kind of moral position was rejected by David Hume. For him, moral action is determined solely by passion, never by reason. He argued that there is no highest goal to be achieved other than acting aroused by passion in a given time and space. By comparing the thoughts of David Hume to the ethics of self-realization or ethics of duty, we are reminded that moral action can never be separated from passion as well as moral reasoning. Tis position will be defended by this paper.Key words: Moral sense, reason, will, freedom, causality, moral principles, David Hume

Abstract

Following the whole process of the trial of Eichmann in Jerusalem, Hannah Arend trealised that crimes and violence (evil) done by Eichmann and the Nazi were the clues of theabsence of the thoughtfulness. The question arises as to why a thoughtless man like Eichmann didsuch a big crime and violence against the Jews? The absence of reflective and philosophical thoughtsthat expels a moral agent to justify his moral deeds has become the root cause why Eichmannfailed to act according to some fundamental moral principles. The trial of Eichmann was really anexposure of the banality of evil against humanity. Could reason or reflective thoughts hinder amoral agent from evil deeds? How should we understand the banality of evil in political exercise?By reflecting the thoughts of Hannah Arendt on the banality of evil, this article discusses and triesto answer these questions.

Abstract

Dialogue and co-existence between religious believers have been practiced quite extensively in Indonesia, especially since the New Order era. From the beginning, it did happen top-down because of the government's political strategy to create a peaceful and stable society for the success of physical development. However, in subsequent developments, the importance of changing approaches to dialogue and cooperation between religious believers was considered as an urgent matter. Therefore, the active involvement of citizens and the creation of social spaces for the interaction and encounter of citizens of different religions, ethnicities and cultures have been initiated and practiced by the government in many regions of Indonesia. Unfortunately, intolerant and exclusive attitudes among citizens still occur. By using philosophical inquiry methods to analyze various practices of interreligious dialogue in Indonesia, it was found that first, there has been a change in approach in interreligious dialogue in Indonesia. Second, it is increasingly being realized that social spaces for encounters between different citizens must continue to be expanded as a medium to combat intolerant attitudes. Third, caring ethics, especially aspects of attention, can be a moral and philosophical foundation that strengthens caring interactions between citizens in the social space that has been formed

Abstract

Introduction: This study investigates the correlation between maternal knowledge and attitudes and their impact on preventing Acute Respiratory Infections (ARIs) in under two children in Lewoleba, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. With a focus on this region with limited prior research, the study explores howa mother's understanding and approach toward ARI prevention measures may contribute to improved child health outcomes. Methods: A cross-sectional study investigated the association between maternal knowledge and attitudes and their impact on preventing ARIs in children under two years old in Lewoleba, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. The study administered structured questionnaires to gather data on maternal knowledge and attitude toward ARIs, behavior toward prevention, and demographic information. Data were analyzed using bivariate analysis to evaluate the association. Results: Of 144 respondents, 81.3% showed high ARI knowledge, but only 54.9% had positive attitudes, and 53.2% exhibited good behaviors. The Chi-square test revealed a significant relationship between knowledge and attitude with ARI behavior (P<0.05) among mothers with children aged 0-24 months in Lewoleba Primary Health Centre, Nubatukan District, Lembata Regency. Specifically, mothers with high knowledge had a 2.31 prevalence ratio (PR) for good ARI-related behaviors compared to those with low ability. In contrast, those with positive attitudes had a 1.52 PR for such behaviors. Conclusions: This study revealed a connection between mothers' knowledge and attitudes concerning ARI in children under two and their preventive actions. Despite a relative scarcity of good behaviors compared to strong knowledge and positive attitudes, the findings underscore that higher knowledge scores and more positive attitudes lead to significantly better behavioral outcomes. Keywords: acute respiratory infections - attitude - behavior - knowledge - prevention.

Abstract

As long as humans always try to understand the deepest meaning of a text, symbol, or event, hermeneutics is a common activity. However, the gap between the creation of texts, symbols or events has created its own problems that must be solved. The problem is, should an attempt at interpretation of a text, symbol or event achieve its objective status in the sense intended by the author or writer, or not? Hermeneutic thinkers differ in solving this problem. Unlike Friedrich Schleiermacher and Wilhelm Dilthey who emphasized the importance of revealing the author’s original intent, Hans-Georg Gadamer emphasized the importance of the subjective dimension of the interpreter. In Gadamer’s thought, prejudice and cultural influences in interpreting a text, symbol or phenomenon are also considered as one of the horizons. Dialectic and horizon fusion in itself will be an internal mechanism to reduce the dominance of prejudice or subjectivity that cannot be accounted for. By paying close attention to Jurgen Habermas’s note that hermeneutics overemphasize the aspects of prejudice and cultural influences will only provide opportunities for certain communication distortions and cultural hegemony, Gadamer’s contribution can still be maintained as a human hermeneutical activity.

Abstract

Thomas S. Kuhn envisioned the development science as occured through a scientific revolution when the scientific paradigm defended by the scientific community was no longer able to solve concrete problems. The scientists then shifted to a new paradigm that was able to solve the problem as well as promising a more stable of future research. This view has been criticized by Larry Laudan who says that paradigm shift is incompatible with the reality of the development of science itself. For Laudan, science develops through an internal evolution of science itself. The paradigm will never be abandoned altogether whenever scientists face a new scientific problem. Scientific theories will prove its compatibility and update itself through the process of scientific dialogue vertically and horizontally in the hierarchical model of epistemic justification.

Abstract

Every encounter with a work of art has the potential to give birth to the aesthetic experience. The depth of the experience and its transformative effect is different on each person. However, as an experience, its existence is not in doubt. The problem lies on whether an aesthetic experience is something purely subjective or objective. If the aesthetic experience is objective, to what extent can it be accounted for? Could an aesthetic experience encourage certain ethical action? In this paper the author argues that an aesthetic experience is always moving between the directions of a pendulum, namely, when the artwork appeared to the awareness of the subject and when the experiencing subject narrated the experience. The author wants to defend one of the main positions in aesthetics which says that not only the aesthetic experience encourages a particular moral action, the artwork itself might often stand as a medium of a moral struggle for the betterment of the people.

Abstract

Human existence is perceived by Martin Heidegger as Dasein, that being-in-the-world. The modes of existence of Dasein in the world are Being-with-the-other (Mitsein), Being-alongside-things (Sein-bei), and Being-one’s-self (Selbstein). For Heidegger, the ideal mode of existence of Dasein is Being-one’s-self (Selbstein). Only through this mode of being that Dasein forms its distinctiveness from other entities which are just being-within-the-world. As to the convenience of enjoying the objects of the world, idle talk or gossipping can cause Dasein to forget its authentic being. After describing the thoughts of Heidegger on the fall of Dasein into being unauthentic, this paper highlights the ontological awareness of the existence of Dasein towards death as an authentic mode of existence. At the end of this writing, I propose narration as a ‘tool’ to be used by health care providers in assisting the patient to affirm and accept illness experience as their modes of being.

Abstract

The commodification of the body in health services covers a very broad study area. Contextualised in the Marxist understanding, the commodification of the body seemed to be associated with body as an economical commodity and alienating experience. This understanding has been intertwined with the commodification of the body in the health services, especially when it comes down to the practice of health care in which the patient’s body was treated merely as object for certain purposes. In the context of health care, treating the body as an object since Descartes not only bares the ethical-relational dimension of doctor-patient relationship, but also alienates the patient from her or his own body. This article argues that reducing a patient’s body to an object does not correspond to the nature and to the medical profession. In the light of Edmund D. Pellegrino and Alfred I. Tauber, two leading philosophers of medicine, the author will highlight the importance of the apprehension towards the patient as ‘persona’ as a response to the tendency.
