Abstract

Thomas S. Kuhn envisioned the development science as occured through a scientific revolution when the scientific paradigm defended by the scientific community was no longer able to solve concrete problems. The scientists then shifted to a new paradigm that was able to solve the problem as well as promising a more stable of future research. This view has been criticized by Larry Laudan who says that paradigm shift is incompatible with the reality of the development of science itself. For Laudan, science develops through an internal evolution of science itself. The paradigm will never be abandoned altogether whenever scientists face a new scientific problem. Scientific theories will prove its compatibility and update itself through the process of scientific dialogue vertically and horizontally in the hierarchical model of epistemic justification.

Abstract

Every encounter with a work of art has the potential to give birth to the aesthetic experience. The depth of the experience and its transformative effect is different on each person. However, as an experience, its existence is not in doubt. The problem lies on whether an aesthetic experience is something purely subjective or objective. If the aesthetic experience is objective, to what extent can it be accounted for? Could an aesthetic experience encourage certain ethical action? In this paper the author argues that an aesthetic experience is always moving between the directions of a pendulum, namely, when the artwork appeared to the awareness of the subject and when the experiencing subject narrated the experience. The author wants to defend one of the main positions in aesthetics which says that not only the aesthetic experience encourages a particular moral action, the artwork itself might often stand as a medium of a moral struggle for the betterment of the people.

Abstract

Human existence is perceived by Martin Heidegger as Dasein, that being-in-the-world. The modes of existence of Dasein in the world are Being-with-the-other (Mitsein), Being-alongside-things (Sein-bei), and Being-one’s-self (Selbstein). For Heidegger, the ideal mode of existence of Dasein is Being-one’s-self (Selbstein). Only through this mode of being that Dasein forms its distinctiveness from other entities which are just being-within-the-world. As to the convenience of enjoying the objects of the world, idle talk or gossipping can cause Dasein to forget its authentic being. After describing the thoughts of Heidegger on the fall of Dasein into being unauthentic, this paper highlights the ontological awareness of the existence of Dasein towards death as an authentic mode of existence. At the end of this writing, I propose narration as a ‘tool’ to be used by health care providers in assisting the patient to affirm and accept illness experience as their modes of being.

Abstract

The commodification of the body in health services covers a very broad study area. Contextualised in the Marxist understanding, the commodification of the body seemed to be associated with body as an economical commodity and alienating experience. This understanding has been intertwined with the commodification of the body in the health services, especially when it comes down to the practice of health care in which the patient’s body was treated merely as object for certain purposes. In the context of health care, treating the body as an object since Descartes not only bares the ethical-relational dimension of doctor-patient relationship, but also alienates the patient from her or his own body. This article argues that reducing a patient’s body to an object does not correspond to the nature and to the medical profession. In the light of Edmund D. Pellegrino and Alfred I. Tauber, two leading philosophers of medicine, the author will highlight the importance of the apprehension towards the patient as ‘persona’ as a response to the tendency.

Abstract

Traditional ethics such as deontology which prioritizing the observance of moral subject to ethical principles, or utilitarianism that weight higher the benefits of the majority rather than the interests of individuals, it is increasingly recognized that such ethical theories have forgotten the relational aspects of moral action. To act morally is in the first place not for the sake of the observance of moral principles, but the recognition that individuals who relate to him is a moral person whose interests must be taken into account, and that the interests of moral patient that gave birth to moral duty is actually the source that drives moral behavior. That is what we labeled as the ethics of care. The author of this paper describes how an ethic of care has colored the leadership characters of Tri Rismaharini, the mayor of Surabaya. The author shows that people‟s interest is the source of moral obligation that drive her to build the city of Surabaya, and that the interests of the people can only be understood in a caring relation with the community itself.

Abstract

Empathy is one of the virtues that should be owned by health care providers. In the doctor– patient relationship, empathy enables health care providers to win not only the confidence of the patients, but also assisting them to accept their state of illness and disease. As to the fact that medical students have a high knowledge of empathy in line with the study periods, empathic relation is often absent in doctor–patient relationship. This study is intended to look at the relationship between the length of studies and the knowledge of empathy. This cross- sectional study applied Baron-Cohen Empathy Quotient to collect data from 98 respondents at Atma Jaya School of Medicine, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, academic years of 2013 (third year) and 2015 (the first year). The study revealed that 49 respondents have a higher level of empathy knowledge and 49 others at the lower one. Among the higher knowledge of empathy, 73.47% (n=36) had lower knowledge of empathy compared to 26.53% (n=13) at the higher one. Among the lower knowledge of empathy, 91.84% (n=45) had lower knowledge of knowledge compared to 8.16% (n=4) at the higher one. A total of 76.47% respondents with a higher knowledge of empathy (n=17) were the third year students (academic year 2013), whereas the 23.52% are the first year students (academic year 2015). This study has proven the relation between the length studies (academic years) with the knowledge level of empathy.
