Abstract

To fill the absence of research in the context of communication strategies used by Papuan EFL students, this research would present and fill this knowledge gap. This research aimed to determine the types and their reasons of communication strategies used by Papuan EFL students. It applied qualitative study. The researcher used observation and interview as the research instruments. It was found that Papuan EFL employed fillers, code-switching, self-repetition, self-repair, asking for clarification, asking for confirmation, and direct appeal for help. The reasons why Papuan EFL students do those communication strategies because of thinking time, anxiety, nervousness, doubt, worriedness, hesitation, lack of knowledge, lack of vocabulary, grammatical errors, and self-confidence.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between EFL learners' extroversion personality and their writing skills. Correlational research is used as a type of research method used in the study involving observing two variables consisting of extroversion personality and writing skills to establish a statistically corresponding relationship of them. To collect the samples, the sampling technique used is Saturated Sampling which means the technique of determining the sample when all members of the population are used as samples. Therefore, the samples are 50 EFL learners as respondents. The study was employed at Pohuwato University, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, English Education Department. By using EPI questionnaire, it is clear to find out the personality of the respondents whether the learner is introvert or extrovert. Furthermore, writing skills are assessed by using criteria of writing test by Heaton. Both extroversion data and writing skills data are quantifiable data. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product-moment. The findings showed that there was a medium correlation between EFL learners' extroversion personality and their writing skills. It can be concluded that extroversion personality gives a medium influence to EFL learners writing skills. In other words, extrovert learners' tent to show good writing skills. Further studies are expected to elaborate more specifically about extroversion personality and writing skills.

Abstract

Intelligence is one of psychological factors which affect the speaking proficiency. Therefore, this study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills. With regard to the methodology applied in this study, a correlation research was used to determine whether, and to what degree, a relationship exists between two or more quantifiable variables in form of quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used in the correlational research due to the assumption that the selected students were able to give information or data in relation to the research problems based on the research design. Thus, 40 students were chosen as the samples. The study was conducted at the first-year students of SMA Negeri 2 Makassar. Moreover, the quantifiable data were obtained from speaking test based on the Heaton assessment and intelligence test based on the Barret assessment which were distributed to the students. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product moment. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between students’ intelligence and their speaking skills in degree of high correlation. In other words, the assumption views that the higher intelligence belongs to students the better ability they speak.

Abstract

Motivation is one of some psychological factors which influences the speaking proficiency. Therefore, this study aims at finding out whether or not there is a significant correlation between EFL learners’ motivation and their speaking skills. With regard to the methodology applied in this study, a correlation research was used to determine whether, and to what degree, a relationship exists between two or more quantifiable variables in form of quantitative method. Purposive sampling was used in the correlational research due to the assumption that the selected students were able to give information or data in relation to the research problems based on the research design. Thus, 46 learners were chosen as the samples. The study was conducted at learners in SMA Negeri 1 Marisa, Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo. Moreover, the quantifiable data were obtained from speaking test based on the Heaton assessment and motivation test based on the Likert Scale assessment which were distributed to the learners. The data were then analyzed by Pearson product moment. The findings showed that there was a significant correlation between EFL learners’ motivation and their speaking skills in degree of high correlation. In other words, the assumption views that that the higher motivation belongs to EFL Learners to speak the better ability they speak.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find out and to describe the speaking skills strategies used by the adult EFL students of Pohuwato University and the adults' reason for using those strategies in learning speaking skills. The qualitative descriptive has been employed as the method of the research, and the researcher took the students in the fourth semester of the English department of Pohuwato University as the subject of the research through purposive sampling. To obtain the data, the researcher used the interview and observation as the instrument. The result of the data shows that there are three strategies used by adult EFL students in learning speaking skills. They are cognitive, metacognitive and socio-affective strategies. In cognitive strategy, the students mostly like to apply practicing and analyzing and reasoning. In metacognitive, they used to apply arranging and planning and monitoring, and in  socio-affective, they applied to cooperate with  others as their strategies to use in learning speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal to what extent Papuan EFL students correctly produce English dental fricatives and to find out what consonants substitute voiceless dental fricative /θ/ and voiced dental fricative /ð/ when misarticulation occurs. A descriptive analysis of 30 native Papuan EFL students was taken as the participants of the study. Data were collected by giving pronunciation tests and targets of either voiceless dental fricative /θ/ or voiced dental fricative /ð/ in an onset or coda syllable position. Correct sound production of English dental fricatives, both voiceless and voiced dental fricatives, by Papuan EFL students hardly found and almost unrecognized that only 12.0% of Papuan EFL students correctly pronounce voiceless dental fricative /θ/ and only 3.3% of Papuan EFL students correctly pronounce voiced dental fricative /ð/. It can be stated that the sound production of English dental fricatives lies in low-level production. Furthermore, Papuan EFL students mostly substitute voiceless dental fricative /θ/ with voiceless alveolar plosive /t/ indicated by 84.0% sound substitution. In other words, Papuan L1 speakers dominantly substitute the consonant /θ/ with the consonant /t/. Papuan EFL students frequently substitute voiced dental fricative /ð/ with both voiced alveolar plosive /d/ indicated by 51.6%, and voiceless alveolar plosive /t/ indicated by 43.3% substitution. Thus, Papuan L1 speakers primarily replace the consonant /ð/ with both consonant /d/ and /t/. The implications for the EFL teaching and learning process may assist Papuan EFL students in learning the correct pronunciation of English dental fricatives in order to improve their speaking proficiency

Abstract

Anxiety in writing contains tension, nervousness, worry, and a wide variety of other negative feelings when someone is given a task to write in a certain situation. The objective of this study is to figure out whether or not there is a significant correlation between EFL students' anxiety and their English writing skills. The subject of the study is the fourth semester of EFL students in the State Islamic Institute of Fattahul Muluk Papua. The study focused on a correlational method of two quantifiable variables involving anxiety and English writing skills. Two instruments are used in this study including Foreign Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (FLWAI) developed by Cheng and the writing test developed by Heaton. The samples are 40 EFL students as the respondents and the data were calculated by Pearson product-moment. The findings reveal that there is a significant correlation between EFL students’ anxiety and their English writing skills at a high level. It means that the lower anxiety belongs to EFL students, the better they write in English. Moreover, cognitive anxiety is the most influential anxiety on EFL students’ English writing skills. Then, it is followed by somatic anxiety, and avoidance behavior is also fairly influential.

Abstract

This study investigated the habit of code-switching by EFL students at Bulukumba Senior High School in English Group Discussion. It focused on exploring types of code-switching used by EFL students in English Group Discussion, and the dominant type of code-switching used by EFL students in English Group Discussion. The researchers applied mixed-method, which was a combination of qualitative and quantitative. This study took one class of EFL students as the research subject. The data was gathered through classroom recording by using a video recorder, interview, and field notes. The data analysis showed that students used five code-switching types, namely situational code-switching, metaphorical code-switching, intra-sentential code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching, and tag switching. The dominant type used by EFL students in English Group Discussion was inter-sentential in situational code-switching. In addition, the dominant type occurred in metaphorical code-switching was intra-sentential. The research result indicated that students used code-switching because it was needed in the classroom interaction like English Group Discussion.
