Abstract

Assessment has recently become one of the new educational issues around Asia Pacific countries. The two reflective questions formulated are: 1) Is assessment new  in  the  educational  life  of  Indonesia?  2)  How  do  we  consider  our educational quality compared to countries around Asia pacific?  These questions urged this study to conduct a research in UPI’s SMP Laboratorium Percobaan Bandung to see the perceptions, planning and management of the school (the headmaster) and the three English teachers as the participants, in terms of their application of the assessment. In a qualitative descriptive method, the interviewing, observation and document analysis have been implemented to collect the data.. As a result, this school and the English teachers are only familiar  with  the summative assessment, part of assessment which is mainly grading or testing, evaluative, and less informative to identify students’ learning problem and to recommend teachers’ teaching modification and  improvement. KEYWORDS: assessment, teachers’ perception and the teaching

Abstract

Studies about an attitude toward learning English have been conducted almost everywhere because of its important influence on the English learning process. The attitude can be categorized into three components namely cognitive, affective/emotional, and behavioral. The study is focused on the emotional component which covers the person’s emotions and feeling towards an object. It can directly affect one’s preferences in order to stand for or against or to like or dislike something. Due to the pandemic situation where all the subjects must be done virtual, the researcher attempts to explore what are students’ emotional attitudes toward the virtual oral presentation. The researcher finds it interesting since virtual learning is an uncommon method for students, especially in doing an oral presentation as well as the novelty of the previous related study. The research objective is to find out the students’ emotional attitudes towards oral presentation in virtual learning, especially in the fifth semester of the English education study program at Pattimura University. This study applied a survey as a research design by using a Questionnaire and Interview. The subject of this study consists of fifteen students who enrolled in SLA class. The result of the questionnaire showed that most students in the second language acquisition (SLA) class held a positive attitude toward the virtual oral presentation. The majority or 12 students (80%) strongly agreed that the oral presentation in virtual learning is more fun and preferable. On the other hand, 11 students (73.3%) strongly agreed that it reduces their anxiety level and also improves their self-confidence. In conclusion, it benefits so much to improve their motivation in English virtual learning compared to face-to-face oral presentations. In a face-to-face class, they had high speaking anxiety by having a great fear of getting involved in a conversation, great fear of the audience, and a great fear of failure. In addition, further researchers can focus on the technology application in virtual learning and its impact on students’ language ability as the novelty element of this study.

Abstract

The implementation of the Independent Curriculum requires teachers to create innovative and interactive learning processes, but the limitations of interesting media and strategies are often a challenge, especially in areas with limited access. This service activity aims to increase the professional capacity of 30 teachers from SMPN 49 and SMPN 53 Central Maluku in integrating board games as an effective learning medium and supporting the creation of Deep Learning. The method of implementing the activity is centralized training (hands-on workshop) and subject group assistance which is carried out for 1 day with a total duration of 3 hours. This training focused on sample board game analysis (My Favorite and Word Brick) and a prototype design mini-workshop by seven subject groups. The results of the evaluation showed a very satisfactory level of participant satisfaction with an average score of 3.75 out of a scale of 4.0, indicating that the applicable training method was in accordance with the needs of the teacher. In addition, 85% of participants stated that there was a significant increase in knowledge and self-efficacy on the potential of board games as a teaching medium. The concrete output produced is 7 board game prototypes that are ready to be implemented. The main benefit obtained is the diversification of teachers' learning strategies. In conclusion, this training successfully equips teachers with new skills in designing effective interactive media and makes a significant contribution to improving the quality of teaching at partner schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the strategies that English teachers at SMP Negeri 14 Ambon consider most effective in enhancing students’ speaking abilities. The research focuses on four aspects of speaking assessed at the school, namely fluency, intonation, accuracy, and pronunciation. This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method design, combining quantitative data from a checklist-style questionnaire distributed to 10 English teachers with qualitative data from in-depth interviews with selected teachers. The findings reveal that Conversation, Discussion, and Language Games are the most frequently used strategies, with Conversation consistently ranked as the most effective across all speaking aspects. Additionally, the use of various strategies not only improves students’ pronunciation but also boosts their confidence and motivation to speak English. This study highlights the importance of applying interactive and communicative strategies to create a supportive environment for students to actively practice speaking in real contexts. It is expected that the results of this study can serve as a valuable reference for English teachers to select and implement appropriate strategies to improve students’ speaking skills.
