Abstract

Green space has a vital role in the community’s health and well-being. Forest bathing is an effective method of enjoying the forest atmosphere through physical activity or relaxing in a forest landscape. However, until now, no one has declared the benefits of forest therapy in Indonesia. This study clarifies the physiological and psychological effects of walking in a campus landscape. This research was conducted using experimental methods through physical activity survey, self-report questionnaires, Visitor Employed Photography (VEP), and automatic classification based on the image annotation API. The experiment was conducted in a park and an arboretum, and thirty-two young university subjects were tested. The participants walked for fifteen minutes on walking routes and district roads. Their blood pressure was measured before and after walking, and their heart rate was measured continuously. During the walk, the subjects took photographs of striking scenes using the Visitor Employed Photography method. Profile of Mood States (POMS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used to evaluate the psychological responses. Walking in the campus landscape resulted in a lower heart rate, less negative moods, and less anxiety than walking on the district road. Out of 837 photographs, 45% were taken from the Academic Event Plaza, 41.5% from the Arboretum, and the remaining 13.5% from district road, Jalan Raya Dramaga. Two main groups of campus green spaces included man-made landscape consisting of road surface, buildings, plant organs, stairs, and terrestrial plants; and natural landscape consisting of sky, trees, flowers, clouds, and plant community. This study found that walking in campus green space induced physiological and psychological health benefits and prominent landscape elements supported the green campus.

Abstract

The existence of urban green open space is very important for the creation of a public space that can support various public activities of urban residents and become an ecological space for the creation of an adequate quality urban environment. Bogor City is one of the cities that is currently developing green open space in the form of an urban park to meet the needs of public space as a means of gathering and recreation. Thermal comfort is very important and must be considered in a green space. To obtain the thermal conditions of a landscape, this research uses a thermal drone. This study aims to identify the thermoscape characteristics of landscape elements and people's perceptions of it and also the correlations between them. The analysis used Agisoft Metashape, ArcMap 10.5, Google Earth Pro, Adobe Photoshop CS6, Microsoft Office 2019, and Image Color Summarizer online tool. The thermoscape results in the two urban parks are different due to differences in weather. However, the thermal conditions of each landscape elements are almost the same in both parks. Hardscapes in both parks can have a temperature of >40? C, while vegetation, especially trees, can have a temperature of <20? C. According to respondents, both parks are still considered warm based on their thermal sensation. Hot urban park areas can be modified by presenting a wider green space with good distribution and proportion to make it comfortable for the users.

Abstract

Human health and well-being are affected by the quality of the environment in which an individual lives. Urban spaces must provide restorative experiences to support public mental health. This study aimed to identify visitor preferences for exciting views and stress-relieving features in urban parks. Using visitor-employed photography to capture direct experiences, the study analyzed geotagged photos to identify landscape views, classified restorative landscape elements, and evaluated their effect on urban park visitors. This research employed spatial analysis of photo distribution using QGIS, photo content analysis using Google Cloud Vision API, and assessment of restorative effect through the Perceived Restorativeness Scale (PRS). The photo-taking hotspots were shaded areas with seating, featuring greenery, sculptures, activities, and landmarks. The results showed 2–3 hotspots with the highest photo density in the three parks. The Cloud Vision API classification results identified that the elements of a restorative landscape can be softscape, hardscape, and other factors. The results of the PRS questionnaire test showed that the three parks had a restorative effect on visitors (< 0.05), Sempur Park had the highest fascination (55.13) and compatibility (55.57) effects, and Heulang Park had the highest coherence effect (56.85) than other parks. These findings emphasize the importance of incorporating shaded seating, greenery, and engaging features into urban park designs to enhance visitor health and well-being.
