Abstract

Listening skill is one of language skills providing aural input that serves as the basis for language acquisition and allows learners to interact in oral and written communication. Teaching listening skill in EFL context has its own challenge since students have limited opportunities to speak and listen to English both inside and outside of the class. They also have less immediate English needs. In this situation, they require regular practice and abundant exposure to spoken language over time. Besides, learning process ideally should be able to develop hard skills and soft skills that are integrated into a life skill, the provision of a person to thrive in the society. Concerning this, through a qualitative descriptive study, the researcher describes in detailed ways of accommodating the strength of “reciprocal peer teaching method - learning cell” for teaching listening in EFL context and reinforcement of soft skills. This method conditions student in small groups to learn together, discuss and exchange listening strategies to complete the tasks assigned by the lecturers/ teachers. This collaborative learning activity is also directed to accustom soft skills such as teamwork, mutual respect opinion, a sense of belonging, a sense of responsibility, and leadership as students’ good characters.

Abstract

Learning materials that are locally relevant with the diversity of students’ condition and needs and meaningfulfor their learning are one of some factors influencing the students’ achievement.  However, it is not easy forteacher to provide the students with these adequate learning materials.  Teachers are sometimes just left with aset of textbooks to use without additional learning materials. Besides, there are just few teachers trained toadopt, adapt, and mediate locally available learning materials to meet the current needs of the students. As aresult a number of learners do not achieve the learning objective. This paper is in the form of descriptive studytalking about supplementary materials for reading skill based on constructivism principles for students’ effectivelearning.  It proposes a practical model for developing supplementary materials following constructivismprinciples by fostering teachers to do self-evaluation of their teaching and need analysis for accommodating thestudents’ diversity condition. Supplementary materials are designed to provide students with engaging activitiesthrough which they develop skills, acquire concepts and be responsible for their learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of the inflectional affixes -es and -ed in the narrative text "The Enchanted Fish" and their implications for English language teaching. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method through content analysis, the study identifies the patterns of -es and -ed suffixes attached to verbs in the narrative text. The analysis reveals that the -es suffix represents verbs in the third-person singular form in the present tense, while the -ed suffix represents verbs in the past tense within the narrative. The findings suggest that the use of various tenses in narrative texts enhances storytelling depth and richness, aiding students in understanding contrasts between ongoing events, habitual actions or permanent states, and past occurrences. In this context, the analysis of -es and -ed inflectional affixes on verbs in narrative texts can serve as a resource for teaching students about word formation, which can then be expanded into sentence construction. Furthermore, mastering this grammatical aspect can simultaneously support students' competence in reading and writing narrative texts

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the syntactic complexity of noun phrases in the narrative text "The Enchanted Fish" and its impact on the readability of the text. The research method used is content analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were taken from the text "The Enchanted Fish", an adaptation of a classic folk tale by the Brothers Grimm, and is an English teaching material for high school students in Indonesia. The analysis focused on the identification and categorization of simple and complex noun phrases in the text and how their syntactic structure affects the readability and comprehension of the text. The results showed that 63% of the noun phrases in the text were complex noun phrases, while the remaining 37% were simple noun phrases. Complex noun phrases tend to increase the difficulty level of the text, which can make it difficult for students to read and understand the contents of this narrative text. This is due to the presence of modifiers or layers of detail that explain the core part of the noun (head) in the phrase, thereby increasing the reader's cognitive load. This syntactic complexity requires students to process additional information contained in the modifiers, which often slows down reading speed and reduces overall comprehension of the text. This directly affects the readability of the text by increasing the level of difficulty and potential cognitive fatigue. These findings provide important implications for language teaching strategies, namely underlining the importance of syntactic analysis of noun phrases in order to (1) select appropriate teaching materials/texts, (2) provide structured teaching of noun phrases, and (3) provide constructive feedback in order to help students who have difficulty reading complex texts, especially in the aspect of noun phrases. Keywords: noun phrases, narrative text, text readability

Abstract

This study explores the request strategies of Javanese female English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and how these reflect their politeness in communication. It examines the influence of Javanese cultural values and gender on their choice of strategies. Using Trosborg's (1994) request categorization and Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory, data were collected through role-play and semi-structured interviews. The analysis identifies that the learners mainly use conventionally indirect strategies, particularly hearer-oriented ones, with negative politeness being the most common approach. These strategies emphasize indirect phrasing and respect for the listener's autonomy. Javanese cultural values, such as humility (andhap asor) and empathy (tepa selira), significantly shape these choices. Gender norms also play a role, encouraging politeness and indirectness to reduce imposition and promote harmony. The findings suggest that integrating cultural awareness and contextually appropriate strategies into English teaching can help learners communicate effectively in formal or professional settings

Abstract

Conducting research may contribute positively to teachers’ professionalism and maintain their Career-Long Professional Learning (CLPL). However, many teachers find it challenging and hesitant to conduct research. In this regard, this descriptive quantitative study compares novice and experienced teachers’ motivational factors affecting their decision to conduct research despite their other responsibilities as teachers. This study involved 127 English language teachers who are also active researchers. The data were obtained by using an online survey adopting the Teacher Research Motivation Scale (TRMS) proposed by Hosseini & Bahrami (2022) consisting of 22 items. Descriptive statistics and Mann U-Whitney test were then performed using SPSS software to identify the differences between novice and experienced teachers in their research motivation. The results mostly highlight the importance of comprehensively understanding in-service teachers’ motivational factors to conduct research and foster their willingness to be actively involved in research projects. Government and other educational practitioners may reflect on this study’s result to encourage teachers to conduct research and maintain their professionalism in teaching.
