Abstract

The recent paper aims to figure out how students apply their metacognitive strategies of thesis writing in the COVID-19 pandemic. This study employs an explanatory case study design with 13 English As a Foreign language (EFL) graduates of an Indonesian university involving in this study. Questionnaires and semi-structured interview methods were used for collecting information. The data were then qualitatively analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana interactive model. The findings indicate that individual differences and thesis supervisors' involvement stimulated varied metacognitive strategy use in thesis writing. The challenges, inefficient time management, supervision system, technological issues, and negative disruptive emotions were attributed to delayed thesis completion in the pandemic. It indicates that the metacognitive experience represented by negative psychological factors profoundly affects students’ metacognitive strategies. Hence, promoting students' positive affective states are essential to achieve the expected writing outcomes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to ascertain students' perceptions of the use of digital storytelling as a meaningful learning strategy in an online environment at a senior high school in Indonesia. The case study method was used in this study, which included twenty-eleventh-grade students as participants. The data analyzed in this study come from a student questionnaire, a semi-structured interview, and five-week classroom observation. This qualitative study indicated that students viewed digital storytelling as an instructional method capable of involving them in an active, authentic, and purposeful learning environment. Additionally, digital storytelling enhances students' exposure to a variety of skills and collaborative work portfolios. The study's practical implications for teachers implementing digital storytelling are to allow additional time for content acquisition and comprehensive learning reflection.

Abstract

Cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) technique gives the opportunities for the students to increase language skills, especially applicability of reading activities and composition writing techniques. The absence of a guideline of teaching writing using certain technique results a less effective process of teaching writing. Thus, this research and development study was aimed to investigate the quality of the existing guidelines of writing in junior high school and the development of the practical guidelines of teaching writing in SMPN of Karanganyar Central Java using Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition. This research was conducted through two stages; exploration stage and product development stage. The finding of the exploration stage was obtained through several techniques like interview, observation, document analysis and questionnaire distribution which revealed that there was no certain writing guideline used to teach. The teachers used textbook, syllabus and lesson plan as the guidance of teaching writing. Thus, the writing guideline should be developed by considering the need of the teacher and the students. The guideline prototype was developed by considering some aspects. It contained theoretical theories of writing, CIRC and teaching writing to Junior High School and the implementation of teaching writing of descriptive, recount, and narrative texts. Then, it had been validated by the expert and tried out thrice in one class of eighth graders of SMPN in Karanganyar Central Java. Through focus group discussion, the guideline prototype was changed and revised to be the final draft of writing guideline. Therefore, through the stages, it could be concluded that the practical guideline was feasible to be used by the teachers to teach writing to junior high school students.

Abstract

This study discusses the expressive speech acts of politeness in the counseling process. The study attempts to 1) identify the sub-types of expressive speech acts and their functions in the counseling process and (2) explain the realization of expressive speech act of politeness strategies in the counseling process. Data for the study were collected using passive participation observation and recording with closed-circuit television (CCTV). Data in this study were analyzed following the goal, heuristic method, and contextual methods. The findings of this study are associated with the stages of the counseling process. First, Building Relationships consists of sub-speech acts; Second, the Problem Identification Stage consists of sub-speech acts; Third, Facilitating Therapeutic Change consists of sub-actions speech act. Based on the findings of the study, praising is the most dominant utterance that always appears in every stage of the counseling process. It shows that the communication that happened in the counseling process is in a close, familial, warm, and comfortable atmosphere. This study demonstrates that language plays a critical role in the process of resolving human problems.

Abstract

Previous studies show that assessment for learning (AfL) is reported to give a significant impact on student academic and language skills-related performance, especially when meaningful feedback strategies are adopted. Despite this empirical evidence, in most Asian countries, AfL remains under-practiced particularly in prescribed-mandated curriculum practices where teachers are considered as curriculum transmitters, and exercise-and-test based instruction are still pedagogical rituals in the classrooms. To respond to this critical issue, in this article, we would like to explore assessment for learning (AfL) in English language teaching. It focuses primarily upon the concept of AfL, the aim of Afl, prerequisite for implementing AfL, and the enactment of AfL for classroom practice. Since AfL practices are of great concern to curriculum policy makers, school leaders, and teacher educators, we conclude our article by offering some practical recommendations.

Abstract

Educational technology is substantially aimed at assisting the teaching and learning process especially in material delivery that can be done using Powerpoint Presentation. Particularly, the integration of text-based material and a variety of media promote the likelihood that the audience experiences the effective information processing. Therefore, multimedia-based presentation that is accompanied by verbal explanation must be designed as effective as possible in order to foster the audience’s understanding. The current research was aimed at investigating the strategies employed by the students in designing multimedia-based presentation in Academic Speaking classroom. This qualitative research was carried out using case study approach to obtain the in-depth information. The data were collected through observation, document analysis, and interview. The results show that the students strategies in designing multimedia-based presentation are mainly to foster the audience’s thinking process. Those strategies are using heading to lead to thesis, using bullet list to create sequential delivery, and using the additional element to engage the audience. To make the slide gets into the logical manner, a transitional device is also required. This research will contribute to the teaching and learning process that uses presentation as the method of material delivery. The teacher and the student are expected to know the strategies to design an effective presentation that can promote the audience’s way to process the information. Abstract

Technological developments have a wide impact on many things, one of which is the development of communication through social networking. The interesting thing about the Facebook phenomenon is that most of the users are women. Women who are identical with polite behavior are very interesting to study. This study aims to (1) Identify the form of women’s phatic speech acts on Facebook. (2) Describe the politeness strategy of women’s communication on Facebook, (3) to dig deeper into the extent of women politeness in Facebook through the humanistic teaching perspective. This research is descriptive qualitative research using pragmatic approach. The subjects of the study were women aged 25-50 years. Data is female speech on Facebook social networking. Data selection is done with certain consideration using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a method of referring and noting to a number of speeches containing a form of phatic expression. Test the validity of data is done through credibility test that is by extension of observation and member check. Data analysis was done based on Spradley's analysis model which was divided into 4 stages, namely domain analysis, taxonomic analysis, contextual analysis and cultural theme analysis. The results achieved are: (1) The form of phatic expressions seen from the analysis of speech acts in which the act of speech phatic ranked highest. (2) The characteristics of visible women language are, using polite expression, using indirect sentences, using adjectives, using question tags and humor. (3) The dominant function of the phatic is to maintain friendship and harmony of relationships. (4) Internet-based communication media provide flexibility for women to interact and establish relationships. (5) phatic communication on Facebook becomes dominant because the form of communication is not face to face directly so that the expression of the speaker cannot be seen and the comments that appear cannot be determined time so that the honesty of the less acceptable speech. This has a tendency as a form of introducing space. The women communication in Facebook through the phatic speech acts can be a source of learning approach to be polite in uttering utterances.

Abstract

The global competition between universities encourages an increase in the number of article publications in various international journal publishers. The demand to have article publication is unequal with the ability of academic writing skill, primarily by graduate students who are mostly novice writers. This study aims to determine the efforts of postgraduate students to publish their articles in reputable international scientific journals in the framework of the process of academic writing. This study used questionnaires and interviews as a method to obtain data from postgraduates majoring in chemistry who have Scopus indexed publications. The chemistry students have difficulties in finding a topic, organizing paragraphs, revising the article, and proofreading. This study expected to be a reference for academics who want to have Scopus-indexed publications and can be developed into teaching materials to provide practical steps for students in writing.

Abstract

Examining EFL writing teachers’ beliefs is becoming an essential study since teaching is no longer being noticed merely in a behaviour term but rather as thoughtful behaviour as teachers are active, thinking decision-maker. This study addresses the teachers’ beliefs in the specific teaching writing strategy that is commonly used by the teachers in Indonesia to assist students’ writing, teacher written corrective feedback. It was designed as a case study surveying two teachers from a secondary school in Lampung as its respondents. This current study aims at (1) exploring teachers’ beliefs in providing teacher written corrective feedback both in the explicitness and the amount of feedback, and (2) describing the factors that shape teachers’ beliefs in providing written corrective feedback. The data were collected by using mixed-type questionnaire and interview adapted from Lee (2009) consisting of three items related to the beliefs in written corrective feedback, followed by the factors that shape the beliefs teachers may hold on. The findings show some underlie different beliefs regarding the explicitness and amount of teacher written corrective feedback between the teachers. However, they agreed that academic background in the secondary school and college was counted as the contributed factor that shapes their beliefs in providing written corrective feedback on students’ writing. Further, teacher added practical experience when they are teaching writing as her additional factor.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is an essential skill for students to compete in this technological age. Hence, teachers need to hold strong beliefs about HOTS as it influences their classroom practices. Moreover, the study about HOTS in English language teaching has not been widely explored. This case study seeks to explore teacher’s beliefs in the integration of HOTS in teaching reading and how the beliefs are reflected in classroom practices. Further, it also investigates the factor influencing the teacher’s beliefs and practices. The participant was an experienced English teacher in a public senior high school. Data were collected using interviews, observation, and review of documents. Data then were analyzed using the Pattern Matching technique (Yin, 2018) and interactive model data analysis (Miles, Huberman, & Saldaña, 2014). The results revealed that the teacher held strong beliefs about the integration of HOTS in teaching reading. These beliefs include belief about the conception of HOTS, the importance of HOTS, the role of the teacher, the strategies to promote HOTS, and the assessment of HOTS. In practice, the teacher did not fully reflect what she believes, especially about the assessment of HOTS. It also found that training, learning experience, teaching experience, institutional factor, student factor, and availability of learning support influenced teacher beliefs and practice in integrating HOTS in teaching reading. This study implies that there needs more teachers’ professional development to support the successful integration of HOTS in English language teaching.
