Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of street children's lives in Makassar City through an anthropological approach, highlighting how social and cultural structures influence their identity and behavior. Street children are not only understood as victims of poverty, but they are a social group with their own unique value systems, norms, and internal structures. They form an informal community that demonstrates solidarity, social cohesion, and their own way of life. This study adopts Anthony Giddens' theory of “structuration” and James C. Scott's theory of “resistance” to explain the position of street children as active agents whose daily lives are not only shaped by social structures but also reflexively reproduce and transform these structures through their actions and the power they hold against state dominance, such as symbolic actions and the use of urban space as a arena for negotiating their identities.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines Sibaliparriq, a core cultural value of the Mandar people in West Sulawesi, Indonesia, as a lived household praxis that structures cooperation, gender relations, and family wellbeing. While much gender and development scholarship portrays households as sites of persistent inequality shaped by patriarchal norms, less attention has been given to culturally embedded ethics that actively promote reciprocity and shared responsibility between spouses. Adopting a qualitative descriptive phenomenological approach, this study draws on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation conducted in Tapango Barat Village to explore why Sibaliparriq persists in contemporary household life, how it is enacted in everyday practices, and what impacts families associate with its practice. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method to capture participants’ lived meanings and moral reasoning. The findings reveal that Sibaliparriq functions as a relational household praxis integrating moral obligation, pragmatic cooperation, and culturally legitimate forms of agency. It is enacted through negotiated household governance, flexible labor sharing across productive and reproductive domains, and collaborative parenting practices. Participants perceive Sibaliparriq as strengthening household harmony, livelihood resilience, women’s recognized participation in decision-making, and the continuity of Mandar cultural identity. Conceptually, the study situates Sibaliparriq within international debates on cooperative–conflict dynamics and women’s empowerment, demonstrating how locally grounded cultural ethics can operate as informal governance mechanisms that reshape gender relations without requiring a rupture from local cultural norms. The study contributes to comparative gender scholarship by highlighting the importance of culturally embedded pathways to cooperation and empowerment in family life.

Abstract

Substitute commodities are substitute products with the same utility value as a company's previous products. Most businesses generally include the procurement of these materials in their marketing plans to optimize sales. The definition of substitute commodities can also be understood as an option or solution when a company runs out of stock of a particular product during times of high market demand. Of course, the decision to transact these materials is left to the consumer. This study aims to identify the driving factors behind commodity substitution in Sandana Village. The method used was qualitative research through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the factors driving farmers' decisions to switch to oil palm are supported by a combination of economic factors and external support. In addition to the potential for higher profits, the presence of viruses or pests on previous crops is also a factor.

Abstract

In the rural economic system, earning a living is not solely the responsibility of men as fathers and husbands; women, as mothers and wives, also play a crucial role. This is evident in Tongketongke Village. This study aims to analyze women's livelihood activities. The methods used in this study were observation and interviews. The results indicate that women's involvement in earning a living in Tongketongke Village significantly impacts household well-being. This income can be used to meet household economic needs, children's school needs, and health needs. Therefore, the income earned by women cannot be categorized as secondary income, but rather serves as a safety valve when their husbands are unemployed, given that their work is irregular or seasonal. In carrying out their activities as breadwinners, women do not neglect their duties as wives and mothers; they continue to fulfill their domestic roles before assuming their public roles

Abstract

This research examines the socio-economic transformations of the farming community in Kaballokang Pakkabba Village, Takalar Regency. The shift from traditional farming systems toward modernization and commercialization has triggered significant changes in the local social structure. Economically, these changes are evident in increased productivity through the adoption of modern agricultural machinery (alsintan) and high-yield seed varieties, which have reshaped household income patterns. Socially, however, modernization has led to a shift in traditional values, where the long-standing communal practices of sipakatau and sipalele are increasingly replaced by contractual, wage-based labor relations. Furthermore, reliance on chemical inputs and market price fluctuations poses new challenges to farmers' welfare. The findings indicate that while there is an improvement in material living standards, there is also a growing social vulnerability as traditional cohesion fades. This study concludes that the socio-economic changes in Kaballokang Pakkabba represent an adaptive response to agricultural modernization, which demands efficiency at the expense of local cultural values

Abstract

This study explores the cultural practice of fangirling on social media platform X as a space for identity negotiation and communal solidarity in the digital era. Using a digital ethnography approach, data was collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with fans, and a documentary study of the digital footprints of the informants. The results show that fangirling is not merely a form of passive consumption, but rather a communal cultural activity carried out massively and organized through fictitious kinship structures in cyberspace. This phenomenon manifests itself in the form of digital "work culture," such as the ritual of collectively streaming music and mobilizing votes to increase the symbolic capital of the idol group SEVENTEEN on the global stage. This practice confirms a shift in social interaction patterns, where group loyalty is bound by a commitment to the idol's aesthetics and achievements. Anthropologically, this activity creates a new value system that blurs the boundaries between the private space of fans and the digital public space, while simultaneously strengthening the position of social media platform X as a primary locus in the formation of contemporary popular culture.
