Abstract

Social competence is essential for agricultural extension worker since it is directly related to their duties to interact with farmers.   This article discusses the extension to which Open and Distance Learning (ODL) can improve the social competence and its aspects, the dominant factors affecting social competence, and strategy for the development of social competence of extension workers. Designed as an explanatory research, the entire population of agricultural extension workers (n=111) who were graduated from ODL in four different locations (Serang, Karawang, Cirebon, and Tanggamus areas) were used as respondents. A survey technique was implemented among them. In depth interview was also conducted to elaborate the findings. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and regression analysis. The findings indicated that: (1) agricultural extension workers had a moderate level in their social competence. Their knowledge on social concept was relatively good but still having problems in implementing it; (2) learning facilities, training, and subject matter coverage were factors significantly affecting social competence. The most dominant factor was held by the subject matter coverage; and (4) strategies that can be formulated to improve social competence were improving their level of knowledge and skills in terms of social matters. These can be focused on improving the learning quality, mainly on subject matter development. From the findings, it can be concluded that ODL as an educational institution can be addressed by agricultural extension workers to improve their social competence. As an implication, ODL institution need to support the students by giving a better subject matter coverage, while Agricultural Department  need to support the learning quality  of agricultural extension workers  by giving learning motivation and learning facilities.

Abstract

Agricultural extension workers must have several competencies in order to do their job properly.One essential competence to master was related to their andragogic abilities, especially in mastering the concepts of extension and adult education.This research was intended to identify the andragogic competence of agricultural extension workers graduated from Universitas Terbuka (UT). The information of competence aspects such as knowledge, affective, and psychomotor were also collected to elaborate the findings. By using an explanatory research design, a survey technique was implemented among 111 agricultural extension workers who were graduated from UT in four different locations, namely Serang, Karawang, Cirebon, and Tanggamus. Data were collected by using questionnaire and analyzed by using descriptive statistics. In depth interview was also conducted to elaborate the findings. The findings indicated that agricultural extension workers graduated from UT generally had a medium level in their andragogic competence, either in implementing the concepts of extention or in adult education. Their level of knowledge and psychomotor was low, while their affective level were moderate.

Abstract

Agricultural extension workers who study at Universitas Terbuka (UT), which is a distance education institution,were to obtain the necessary competencies. By studying at UT, they can improve their competencies without leaving their duties. The purpose of this study was to analyze the profile of learning process of agricultural extension workers in distance education, particularly in terms of interaction with modules, tutorial activities,the scope of learning materials, independent learning, and learning facilities. Designed as an exploratory research, this study was supported by qualitative approach to obtain information that was not obtained through surveys. Respondents were agricultural extension workers in the regions of Bengkulu, Samarinda, Serang, Pontianak, Jambi, Jakarta, and Bogor. The data collected in this study were primary and secondary data. Primary data were collected using a questionnaire and indepth interviews using interview guidelines. Secondary data were obtained through the collection of documentation. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis, while qualitative information was analyzed qualitatively. The results indicated that the profile of the learning process of agricultural extension workers graduated from distance education is quite good, as seen from the high-intensity interactions between agricultural extension workers with learning materials or modules. Their participation in tutorials were also good, especially in face to face tutorials. Online tutorials were generally not been widely used. The scope of learning materials also need to accommodate in accordance to the needs of their independent learning. However, to improve the quality of service, there are several things in the learning process that needs to be addressed, such as learning facilities and interaction with modules. Para penyuluh belajar di Universitas Terbuka (UT), yang merupakan institusi pendidikan jarak jauh, untuk mendapatkan kompetensi yang dibutuhkan. Dengan belajar di UT, penyuluh dapat meningkatkan kompetensinya tanpa meninggalkan tugas pekerjaannya. Tujuan penelitian adalah menganalisis keragaan proses pembelajaran penyuluh pertanian dalam sistem belajar jarak jauh, khususnya dalam hal interaksi penyuluh dengan modul, partisipasinya dalam kegiatan tutorial, cakupan materi dalam kurikulum, kemandirian belajar, dan pemanfaatan fasilitas belajar. Rancangan penelitian ini adalah exploratory research, didukung dengan pendekatan kualitatif untuk memperoleh informasi yang tidak diperoleh melalui survei. Sampel penelitian ini adalah penyuluh di wilayah Bengkulu, Samarinda, Serang, Pontianak, Jambi, Jakarta, dan Bogor. Data yang dikumpulkan dalam penelitian ini adalah data primer dan data sekunder. Data primer dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan kuesioner melalui survei dan wawancara mendalam. Data sekunder diperoleh melalui pengumpulan dokumentasi dengan cara mencatat data yang tersedia di instansi-instansi, dan kajian pustaka yang relevan dengan penelitian. Data kuantitatif dianalisis menggunakan analisis statistika deskriptif, sedangkan informasi kualitatif dianalisis secara kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa keragaan proses pembelajaran penyuluh pertanian lulusan pendidikan jarak jauh UT cukup baik, yang terlihat dari intensitas interaksi yang tinggi antara penyuluh dengan bahan belajar atau modul. Disamping itu, partisipasi penyuluh dalam kegiatan tutorial juga baik, khususnya pada kegiatan tutorial tatap muka. Tutorial onlineumumnya belum banyak dimanfaatkan penyuluh mengingat ketika mereka belajar dulu layanan tutorial online yang disediakan UT masih terbatas. Kurikulum yang digunakan juga sudah mengakomodasi kebutuhan penyuluh yang mendukung kemandirian belajar mereka. Namun demikian, untuk meningkatkan kualitas layanan yang lebih baik, ada beberapa hal dalam proses pembelajaran yang perlu dibenahi, yaitu fasilitas belajar dan interaksi dengan bahan ajar.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the competence of the agriculture extension workers in terms of their access on agricultural information. By using an explanatory research design and a census method, all population of agricultural extention workers in Serang Regency, West Java were used as respondent. Data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive and regression analysis. The results of this study indicated that generally no relation was found between factors on individual characteristics, learning activities at UT, other learning source, environment factors, and their competence on information access. It was found that their competence level was categorized as moderate. The same level was also on their competence aspects, those were cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Related to their perfomance in innovation implementation, the findings indicated that the level was moderate. In conclusion, the competence of agriculture extension workers which was categorized as moderate need to to be improved in order to give a better service to farmer.

Abstract

One of the products that are beneficial to humans is local microorganisms (MOL). MOL is a liquid containing microorganisms produced by themselves from natural materials around us, where these materials serve as a medium for the life and development of microorganisms that are useful in accelerating the destruction of organic materials (decomposers) or as additional nutrients for plants. Activity community service aims to increase knowledge and skills about the manufacture of local microorganisms (MOL) and their use in orchids. Activity community service was carried out at PKK Taman Darmaga Permai Bogor with a membership of about 40 people. Stages of activity community services namely: (1) Location survey/licensing; (2) Theoretical training: (3) Practical training; (4) Spraying; and (5) Monitoring and evaluation. In addition to the stages above, the team community service also distributed questionnaires to assess the level of knowledge, mental attitudes, and skills of participant community service on the manufacture of MOL and its use in orchid plants. Training participant community service general, they can understand about the making of MOL and the cultivation of orchids in theory. After they understand the theory of making MOL for orchids, they can also practice making MOL in their own homes. Furthermore, the MOL that has been made by PKK participants is applied to orchid plants by spraying all parts of the plant. From the results of monitoring and evaluation from the team community service, the orchid plants that had been sprayed with MOL by the training participants appeared to be thriving and blooming diligently. Salah satu produk yang bermanfaat bagi manusia adalah Mikroorganisme Lokal (MOL). MOL adalah cairan yang mengandung mikroorganisme hasil produksi sendiri dari bahan-bahan alami di sekitar kita, dimana bahan-bahan tersebut sebagai media untuk hidup dan berkembangnya mikroorganisme yang berguna dalam mempercepat penghancuran bahan-bahan organik (dekomposer) atau sebagai tambahan nutrisi bagi tanaman. Kegiatan abdimas bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan keterampilan tentang pembuatan mikroorganisme lokal (MOL) dan pemanfaatannya pada tanaman anggrek. Kegiatan abdimas dilakukan di PKK Taman Darmaga Permai Bogor dengan jumlah anggota sekitar 40 orang. Tahapan kegiatan abdimas yaitu: (1) Survei lokasi/perijinan; (2) Pelatihan secara teori: (3) Pelatihan secara praktik; (4) Penyemprotan; dan (5) Monitoring serta evaluasi. Selain tahapan di atas, tim abdimas juga menyebarkan kuesioner untuk menjaring tingkat pengetahuan, sikap mental, dan keterampilan peserta abdimas terhadap pembuatan MOL dan pemanfaatannya pada tanaman anggrek. Peserta pelatihan abdimas pada umumnya dapat memahami tentang pembuatan MOL dan budidaya tanaman anggrek yang dilakukan secara teori. Setelah mereka memahami tentang teori pembuatan MOL tanaman anggrek, mereka juga dapat mempraktikkan pembuatan MOL di rumah masing-masing. Selanjutnya MOL yang sudah dibuat oleh peserta PKK diaplikasikan ke tanaman anggrek dengan cara di semprot di seluruh bagian tanaman. Dari hasil monitoring dan evaluasi dari tim abdimas, tanaman anggrek yang telah disemprot dengan MOL oleh para peserta pelatihan nampak tumbuh subur dan rajin berbunga.

Abstract

A tracer study is intended to know the success of educational process of graduates. The purposes of this study is to describe: (1) the profile of graduates, (2) their learning experience, (3) the quality of their performance, competence and competitiveness, (4) their satisfactionwhen study at Universitas Terbuka (UT), (5) their willingness for further studies, (6) stakeholders perceptions on graduate, and (7) their participation on UT Alumni Association. This study was conducted by a survey of 124 respondents, through questionnaires and interviews. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented in the form of tabulated frequencies and percentages. The findings indicated that most respondents have educational background on high school level, GPA below 2.75, with study duration of 8 years, as well as following the lessons at UT for affordability and convenience in carrying out their work. In terms of learning experience , learning material was considered sufficient to provide empirical and practical knowledge. Study at UT was considered as capable of increasing independence and improving skills in applying theory and communication. In the aspect of quality of performance, most stated that they have responsibilities in doing their tasks. Majority considered that their competence was increased, except in using the Internet and foreign language. In the aspect of competitiveness, they claimed a similar quality with other college graduates. Their satisfaction of UT service was considered as good , particularly on credit transfer service and Program Final Task (TAP). Their willingness for further studies was low, but high in attending training activities. The manager considered their learning experience, performance, competencies and competitiveness was good, and stated that their study result had quite impact on their career development . The communication among UT alumni wass still low due to the ineffectiveness of UT alumni association. Tracer study merupakan studi penelusuran terhadap lulusan suatu perguruan tinggi untuk mengetahui keberhasilan proses pendidikan yang telah dilakukan. Tujuan tracer study Program Studi (PS) Agribisnis adalah untuk mendeskripsikan: (1) profil lulusan, (2) pengalaman belajar lulusan, (3) kualitas kinerja, kompetensi dan daya saing lulusan, (4) kepuasan lulusan terhadap sistem belajar di Universitas Terbuka (UT), (5) keinginan lulusan untuk studi lanjut, (6) penilaian stakeholders terhadap lulusan, dan (7) partisipasi lulusan dalam Ikatan Alumni (IKA) UT. Penelitian tracer study dilakukan dengan metode survey terhadap 124 responden, melalui kuesioner dan wawancara. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif, dan disajikan dalam bentuk tabulasi frekuensi dan persentase. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa sebagian besar responden berlatar belakang pendidikan setingkat SLTA, memiliki IPK di bawah 2,75, dengan lama studi 8 tahun, dan mengikuti pembelajaran di UT dengan alasan keterjangkauan biaya dan kemudahan dalam menjalankan pekerjaan. Terkait pengalaman belajar, materi perkuliahan dianggap cukup memberikan pengetahuan empiris dan bersifat praktis. Belajar di UT dianggap mampu memupuk kemandirian serta mengasah keterampilan dalam menerapkan teori dan berkomunikasi. Pada aspek kualitas kinerja, sebagian besar responden menyatakan memiliki tanggung jawab yang baik dalam mengerjakan tugas. Pada aspek kompetensi, sebagian besar responden merasa mengalami peningkatan kompetensi setelah lulus kuliah di UT, kecuali dalam menggunakan internet dan berbahasa asing. Pada aspek daya saing, lulusan mengaku memiliki kualitas yang tidak kalah dengan lulusan perguruan tinggi lain. Kepuasan responden terhadap layanan UT bernilai baik, terutama pada layanan alih kredit dan Tugas Akhir Program (TAP). Keinginan lulusan untuk studi lanjut tergolong rendah, namun untuk mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan tergolong tinggi. Atasan menilai baik terhadap aspek pengalaman belajar, kinerja, kompetensi dan daya saing lulusan. Menurut atasan, hasil studi yang ditempuh lulusan cukup berdampak pada pengembangan karir lulusan di tempat kerja. Adapun komunikasi antar alumni UT masih rendah karena tidak efektifnya keberadaan IKA UT di daerah serta kurangnya pertemuan bersama rekan sesama alumni.

Abstract

Agriculture Extension and Communication undergraduate study program (S1 Agribusiness) at Universitas Terbuka (UT) has been opened since 2004.Starting from the registration period of 2012.2, Agribusiness Study Program has been issuing practicum guide as a guidance for students to do their practicum indepedently. This study aims to get students' perceptions of self-practicum management regarding the implementation of independent practicum guidance and analyzet he constraints that exist in the field experienced by the students. The survey is conducted on students who took practicum during the registration periods of 2013.1 to 2014.2. A survey is conducted by questionnaires. The questionnaire asks three aspects of practicum implementation which are practicum guidance aspect, material aspect and of practical support services aspect. Students' perceptions regarding practical implementation are positive, although there are tendencies of having difficulties in understanding the practical guidelines. They feel the guideline is not systematic and lack of details.. The language used in the guideline regarded by most non-extension students as difficult to understand. Students expect the practical guide to be more detailed and clear. They said that it would be easier if at any part of the report is written in great detail of what should they fill, there should be an explanation of how the repot will be rated. Although in general students have positive perceptions, there were some students who had dificulties in accessing practical guidance, obtaining materials and tools, and having qualified and competent instructor. Another constraint felt by most of the students is the marks sometimes received behind the schedule. Mulai masa registrasi 2012.2 Program Studi Agribisnis Fakultas Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam Universitas Terbuka (FMIPA-UT) menerapkan pelaksanaan praktikum mandiri dan memberlakukan Panduan Pelaksanaan PraktikumMandiri yang dirancang sebagai panduan bagi peserta praktikum untuk melaksanakan praktikum secara mandiri. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan datapersepsi mahasiswa terhadap pedoman dan pelaksanaan praktikum mandiri, serta kendala-kendala di lapangan yang dialami oleh mahasiswa.Survei dilakukan terhadap mahasiswa yang mengambil praktikum pada masa registrasi 2013.1 sampai dengan 2014.2 dengan meminta mereka mengisi kuesioner. Kuesioner menanyakan tiga aspek dari pelaksanaan praktikum yaitu aspek pedoman praktikum, aspek materi praktikum dan aspek layanan penunjang praktikum. Persepsi mahasiswa terhadap pelaksanaan praktikum cukup positif, meskipun ada kecenderungan mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan memahami pedoman praktikum. Mereka merasakan panduan praktikum kurang sistematis dan detail. Bahasa yang digunakan dalam panduan oleh sebagian mahasiswa non penyuluh dianggap sulit dipahami. Mahasiswa mengharapkan panduan praktikum dibuat lebih detail dan jelas. Mereka mengatakan akan lebih mudah jika pada setiap bagian laporan dituliskan secara detail hal-hal yang harus mereka masukkan, jika perlu diberikan kisi-kisi penilaian laporan. Meskipun secara umum persepsi mahasiswa terhadap praktikum positif, namun masih ada sebagian mahasiswa yang mengalami kendala dalam hal mengakses panduan praktikum, memperoleh bahan dan alat praktikum serta tidak mudah mendapatkan instruktur yang kompeten. Kendala lain yang dirasakan sebagian besar mahasiswa adalah nilai praktikum yang tidak diterima sesuai jadwal.

Abstract

Salah satu model pengobatan yang terus berkembang dan diminati saat ini adalah dengan pengobatan yang menggunakan bahan-bahan alami yang sering dikenal dengan pengobatan herbal yang berbahan dasar tanaman obat keluarga (TOGA). Tanaman ini selain mempunyai banyak fungsi terutama bagi kesehatan, juga dapat dibudidayakan di lahan pekarangan yang sempit dan tidak membutuhkan banyak perawatan. Kegiatan abdimas yang terkait dengan TOGA ini dilakukan di Majelis Taklim Muslimatul Hidayah, Pondok Cabe Ilir, Tangerang Selatan. Tahapan kegiatan abdimas yaitu (1) survei lokasi/perijinan, (2) pelatihan secara teori tentang jenis, manfaat, pemberian materi tentang beberapa minuman berbahan dasar TOGA, (3) penyebaran leaflet untuk anggota majelis taklim, (4) pengukuran aspek pengetahuan dengan pengisian kuesioner, dan (5) monitoring serta evaluasi. Setelah mereka memahami tentang pengertian, tujuan, jenis, dan manfaat TOGA serta cara membuat minuman berbahan dasar TOGA, maka mereka dapat mempraktikkan pembuatan minuman berbahan dasar TOGA untuk merawat kesehatan tubuh masing-masing.
