Abstract

Abstract: The current research applied quantitative design in order to compute the numerical data. The research design used correlational design and independent sample t-test. The researcher took 33 students to serve as the sample of the study. The data covered the students’ self-confidence level and their speaking score. The findings of the research indicated that the majority of the students (61%) reached high self-confidence in working on the questionnaire, while the majority of the students (76%) reached the average score in their speaking achievement. According to the correlational results, the data showed that the sig. (2-tailed) was .610 which means it was higher than the significant value (0.05). It could be inferred that there was no significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking achievement. Meanwhile, based on the results of independent sample t-test, the level of significance (p-value) was .000 which means the p-value was lower than the significant value (0.05). It could be concluded that there was a significant difference between the students who have high self-confidence and the students who have low self-confidence in their speaking achievement. In sum, it can be stated that the students who have high self-confidence do not determine they will also achieve high speaking achievement. Keywords: Relationship, Speaking Skill, Self-confidence

Abstract

The current study aims at investigating the effectiveness of using strategy-based instruction on the student’s listening achievement. This research applied quasi-experimental design, and the instruments were pretest and posttest. Both tests were about putting the pictures in order and form completion.  Prior to strategy choice, this study utilized Posteriori Taxonomy of Strategies of Learning English Listening Skill (Zuhairi & Hidayanti, 2014) especially focusing on the use of eight strategy categories deployed by successful students (Hidayanti & Umamah, 2018). Gaining the result from Independent t-Test analysis, it was found out that the experimental group outperformed better than their counterparts in control group. Thus, Strategy-based instruction plays important role to enhance and improve the EFL learners’ listening skill.

Abstract

English writing task for students is considered as the most complex task since they need to combine all English skills on writing construction. Metacognition, the highest order thinking, has to be in writing strategies (planning, monitoring, evaluating). The students who use their metacognition can know which effective writing strategies on doing their writing task. This research aims to elaborate on whether there are significant differences between high and low achievers in writing in using metacognitive writing strategies or not. The researcher selects the Ex-Post Facto research and two instruments; (1) writing test - descriptive text to differentiate between high and low achievers in writing (2) questionnaire - to identify the most and the least uses of metacognitive writing strategies. With the Independent T-test for analyzing the data, the findings are. (1) The uses of metacognitive writing strategies and students' writing performance are not significantly different. The mean of each strategy had been compared to the mean of students' performance; moreover, based on the statistical analysis at SPSS, it shows no significant difference. (2)The most used strategy by high and low achievers in writing is planning while the least used strategy is monitoring. From these findings, the null hypothesis is accepted. Although there were no significant differences in the uses of metacognitive writing strategies between high and low achievers in writing, the students have already known effective writing strategies that can improve their writing.
