Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this thesis is to determine the tendency of news content attitude in presenting English news Antaranews.com about 2014 Indonesian presidential election, whether the result is neutral or not. In addition, the purpose of this thesis would also like to know what news topics are the most dominant in the presentation of 2014 Indonesian presidential election in this online media. This study analyzed 59 news about the presidential election during the campaign period that showed by Antaranews.com. This study used a descriptive method. It aims to describe to the reader and reveals a problem, situation, event as it is. This study involved two coders. Based on the analysis, the tendency news content attitude of Antaranews.com favoring the two candidates with the percentage, 36% pro Prabowo-Hatta and 37% pro Jokowi-JK. The most dominant news topic that showed in this Online Media is law and government with a percentage of 28%.AbstrakAnalisis Isi Berita Antaranews.com tentang Pemilihan Presiden tahun 2014. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah untuk mengetahui kecenderungan sikap isi berita berbahasa inggris Antaranews.com dalam menyajikan pemberitaan pemilihan presiden indonesia tahun 2014. Apakah hasilnya netral atau tidak. Selain itu, tujuan skripsi ini juga ingin mengetahui topik berita apa yang paling dominan dalam penyajian berita berbahasa inggris terkait Pemilihan Presiden Indonesia tahun 2014 pada media online tersebut. Penelitian ini menganalisis 59 berita tentang pemilihan presiden selama masa kampanye yang di tampilkan oleh Antaranews.com. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk menggambarkan kepada pembaca dan mengungkapkan suatu masalah, keadaan, peristiwa sebagaimana adanya. Penelitian ini melibatkan dua coder. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, kecenderungan sikap isi berita Antaranews.com adalah memihak kepada dua kandidat dengan persentase, 36% pro Prabowo-Hatta dan 37% pro Jokowi-JK. Adapun topik berita yang paling dominan di tampilkan adalah hukum dan pemerintahan dengan persentase 28%.

Abstract

This study explains the correlation between the TOEFL preparation course to the improvement of the ability to speak in English of the students at UniversitasFajar Makassar. The result of this study is expected to answer the phenomenon between the ability to score at the TOEFL test and the ability to speak of the students in the TOEFL preparation course. This study is also expected to be able to produce a TOEFL preparation class teaching method which is more suitable for improving students' speaking ability. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach, using data in the form of numbers from each measurement instrument. This study analyzes data sets from two data collection instruments; TOEFL scores and Cambridge FCE speaking test scores, taken from the same group of study subjects. The data sets from both instruments are then compared to test the level of correlation. The data analysis and presentation are compiled based on statistical calculations using the correlation research analysis. The findings of this study indicate that the TOEFL score did not significantly correlate with the improvement in the speaking ability of the subjects. The results of the TOEFL training of study subjects with low / high scores did not show a significant increase in the ability to speak even though there was a  linear relationship between the two pairs of the score. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menjelaskan hubungan antara kursus persiapan TOEFL dengan peningkatan kemampuan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris dari para siswa di Universitas Fajar Makassar. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan dapat menjawab fenomena antara kemampuan untuk mendapatkan skor tinggi pada tes TOEFL dan kemampuan untuk berbicara siswa dalam kursus persiapan TOEFL. Penelitian ini juga diharapkan dapat menghasilkan metode pengajaran kelas persiapan TOEFL yang lebih mampu meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif kuantitatif, menggunakan data dalam bentuk angka dari masing-masing instrument pengukuran. Penelitian ini menganalisa kumpulan data dari dua instrument pengumpulan data; Skor TOEFL dan skor tes berbicara Cambridge FCE, diambil dari kelompok studi yang sama. Set data dari kedua instrument kemudian dibandingkan untuk menguji tingkat korelasinya. Analisis dan penyajian data disusun berdasarkan perhitungan statistic menggunakan analisis penelitian korelasional. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kursus persiapan peningkatan skor TOEFL tidak berkorelasi signifikan dengan peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa didik. Hasil pelatihan TOEFL dari subyek penelitian dengan skor rendah/  tinggi tidak menunjukkan peningkatan yang signifikan dalam peningkatan kemampuan berbicara meskipun terdapat hubungan linier antara kedua variable pasang skor tersebut.Kata kunci: TOEFL, analisis statistik korelasi, koefisien korelasi

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using youtube media based on various approaches in improving the learning motivation of English learners. This research is a classroom action research. Data collection techniques used in this study consisted of observations and questionnaires. The subjects in this study were 35 people. This research was carried out in two cycles, each meeting held two meetings. In the initial test, the average learning motivation was 33.74, in the first cycle was 41.25 and in the second cycle was 48.28. Therefore, if we compare it from the initial test to the second cycle test. There is an increase of 14.54. This shows that the use of youtube media has an effect on increasing students' motivation to learn English.

Abstract

This study aims to see and analyse the readiness of Economic and Social Sciences Faculty of Fajar University to implement E-Learning based on the four factors by using Aydin & Tasci’s ELR Model, namely; people, technology, self-development, and innovation factor. This quantitative study used questionnaire was given to lecturers, and students with the total sample were 185. The average score of 3.41 is the minimum score for the level of readiness to implement e-learning. Based on the data, it found that lecturers obtained a total score 3.60 and students was 3.40. From four factors for lecturers, self-development factor was the only factor considered unprepared for implementing e-learning which needs some of the work to reach ready category. However, the rest of the factors are in the 'ready' category in the teaching process. On the other hand, students score result indicated 'not ready' to implement e-learning in the learning process. Even though in technology and innovation factors were showing 'un-readiness', in people factors and self-development indicated that students are 'ready' to implement e-learning even though it requires a few improvements. From the final score result for both lecturers and students, the data show that Economic and Social Sciences Faculty Fajar University is 'ready' to implement e-learning in teaching and learning process even needs a few improvements

Abstract

This research presented the comparative study about the structure in two poetries; they are Night and She Walks in Beauty. It focused the theme, the figure of speech and the imagery. It used the qualitative research. It is analyzed the structure by reading the poetry carefully and giving the note for each line that contains theme, figure of speech and imagery. It used the theory of comparative study and structural approach.The result of this research shows that the poet of those poetries use theme, figure of speech and imagery. There are many kinds of figure of speech and imagery in the poetry. In Night, there are only four figure of speeches  namely (a) Simile, (b) Personification, (c) Metaphor and (d) Hyperbole and uses (1) Visual, (2) Auditory, (3) Tactile and (4) Kinesthetic as the imagery. In She Walks in Beauty, Byron uses (a) simile, (b) personification and (c) litotes as figure of speech and its imagery are (1) Visual and (2) Kinesthetic.The poetry Night and She Walks in Beauty appear both differences and similarities with regard to its poet’s writing style. Blake is subjective whereas Byron is objective in writing. Both poets use the nature in different ways to build the theme, the figure of speech and the imagery. Blake uses the nature to describe two contrast place and Byron used the nature to describe a woman character. AbstrakPenelitian ini membahas studi perbandingan tentang struktur dalam dua puisi, yaitu Night dan She Walks in Beauty. Penelitian ini berfokus pada Theme, Figure of Speech dan Imagery. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kualitatif. Pada penelitian ini, struktur dianalisa dengan membaca puisi dengan seksama dan memberikan catatan untuk setiap baris yang berisi Tema, Majas dan Pencitraan. Penelitian ini mengunakan teori Comparative Study dan pendekatan Structural.Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa penyair pada kedua puisi ini menggunakan Tema, Majas dan Pencitraan. Ada banyak jenis majas dan pencitraan dalam puisi tersebut. Pada puisi Night, Majas hanya ada empat yaitu (a) Simile, (b) Personification, (c) Metaphor dan (d) Hiperbole dan menggunakan (1) Visual, (2) Auditory, (3) Tictile dan (4) Kinestethic sebagai pencitraan. Pada puisi She Walks in Beauty, Byron menggunakan (a) Simile, (b) Personification dan (c) Litotes sebagai majas dan pencitraannya adalah (1) Visual dan (2) Kinestethic.Puisi Night dan She Walks in Beauty tampak perbedaan dan persamaan yang berkaitan dengan gaya penulisan penyairnya. Blake adalah penyair yang subjektif sedangkan Byron adalah penyair yang objectif dalam menulis. Kedua penyair tersebut menggunakan alam dengan cara yang berbeda untuk membangun Tema, Majas dan Pencitraan. Blake menggunakan alam untuk menggambarkan dua tempat yang dan Byron menggunakan alam untuk menggambarkan karakter wanita.

Abstract

This study investigates the translation practices of English Literature students, focusing on their application of theoretical frameworks in translating texts from English and Indonesian. While translation theory is typically taught in academic settings, students often deviate from the prescribed methods during practical exercises, especially when restricted to using only manual dictionaries and prohibited from utilizing electronic translation tools. Using Nida and Taber’s (1982) translation model, which includes the stages of analysis, transfer, and restructuring, this qualitative study aims to explore the translation processes employed by nine active students in an English Literature class. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to all 14 students, with nine providing valid responses. The findings show that the choice of source language significantly influenced the translation strategies used. For English texts, seven students reversed the typical sequence of translation steps, starting with transfer, followed by analysis and restructuring, while two students adhered to the traditional order. In contrast, when translating Indonesian texts, students tended to follow a more structured translation process, although one student did not complete the restructuring stage. This study not only provides valuable insights into how students engage with the translation process but also offers important implications for EFL translation instructors and researchers. Understanding how the source language affects translation practices can inform teaching strategies and enhance our approach to translation studies in the broader context of language education.

Abstract

This research aims to find and describe the various obstacles and the most dominant hindering factors experienced by students that inhibit their ability to speak English in class. This researcher was conducted at SMA Swasta Islam Terpadu Darul Istiqamah in the 2023-2024 academic year. The sample for this research comprised 11th-grade in the second semester. This research uses mixed methods, utilizing questionnaires and interviews as instruments for data collection. This research explores two main hindering factors: affective factors and linguistic factors. The results indicate that the highest barriers preventing students from speaking in English class are affective factors, such as fear of making mistakes, shyness, and lack of motivation. Meanwhile, in terms of linguistic factors, the only notable obstacle is a lack of fluency. These findings suggest that affective factors are the most dominant barriers affecting students' ability to speak in English class
