Using Noddy Cartoon to Improve the Writing Skill of the First Year Students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar Tanasy, Novalia

Abstract

This research is conducted to find out: (1) whether or not the use of Noddy cartoon is effective in improving the writing skill of the first year students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar and (2) the attitude of the first year students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar toward the use of Noddy cartoon in improving their writing skill. The research employs quasi-experimental method with two groups namely control and experimental groups. Each group consists of 30 students. The sample is chosen by applying cluster random sampling technique. The writer uses a test of writing and questionnaire in experimental group. The data obtained through the test is analyzed by using inferential statistic through SPSS version 22.0 program. The Likert-scale is used to analyze data of the student’s response to the questionnaire. In conducting the research, the writer applies Noddy cartoon episodes as the medium in improving the students’ writing skill. The result of this research shows that the use of Noddy cartoon is effective in improving the writing skill achievements of the first year students of SMK Terpadu Mega Rezky Makassar. It is indicated by the significant difference between the result of post-test in the experimental and control groups. The mean score of post-test in the experimental group is 76.77, which is higher than the mean score of post-test in the control group which is only 65.97. Furthermore, the data that are collected from the questionnaire show that the students have positive attitude towards the use of Noddy cartoon in learning writing, which is in scale of 83.20 or categorized as positive.

Abstract

The present study aims at analyzing school policy toward the use of Android devices in the students learning activities during the Covid-19 pandemic condition. The research method used is a qualitative approach with the type of empirical phenomenology research. Six participants were taken using purposive sampling technique as research subjects, consisting of teachers and students’ parents. Data obtained through WhatsApp application. Data was analyzed using empirical phenomenological analysis technique. The results showed that there were 3 aspects analyzed, namely advantages, weaknesses, and expectations of students’ parents towards learning based on Android devices for students. This research concluded that schools should (1) provide opportunities for students to take advantage of Android devices as a learning tool, (2) mediate periodic meetings among teachers and students’ parents to evaluate the behavior and learning outcomes of students, (3) facilitate the learning process so that students and teachers easily access the internet to carry out learning, and (4) guide teachers to improve their digital pedagogy competence to present interesting learning lessons during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Many students face difficulties to express their mind, ideas and feelings because lack of vocabulary. This fact makes them loose the point of information and lead them to the thought that English is a difficult subject, till even frustration. This is why every student must master vocabulary, because when they do, it will be easy for them to master the four language skills. This reasearch aimed to find (1) whether the use of Word-Connection game significantly improved the students vocabulary mastery of the first grade students of English Education in Universitas Muslim Maros on academic year 2018/2019, and (2) their attitudes toward the use of this game. Method of this research was experiment with 2 classes as the subjects. It employed 30 numbers of vocabulary test then analyzed by using inferential statistic SPSS program 25.0 and 20 numbers of close-ended questions questionnaire to find out their attitude towards the use of Word-Connection game. Result of the calculation data said that the mean score improved significantly at the experiment group from 3.476 to 8.356, but at the control group only from 3.950 to 4.550. Standard deviation at experiment group decreased from 1.2444 to 0.9238 and at control group from 1.5472 to 1.7604. Range on normalized gain score at the experiment group was 0.37, smaller than control group which was 0.43. Standard deviation on normalized gain score at experiment group was 0.115511 whereas at control group was 0.11075. Furthermore, data which were collected from questionnaire indicated that the students had positive attitude toward the use of Word-Connection game with mean score 82.68. Findings above concludes that the use of Word-Connection game can improve the students vocabulary mastery at the experiment group.

Abstract

In the current era of globalization, there are often different tendencies arise. This seems to be incompatible with the use of good and correct Indonesian language rules. In addition, strange words are usually included in between, but they are still understandable. While many studies tend to deal with language variant on its linguistics components, this study is focused on sociolect and how it affects social relationship. The study was conducted between 2015 and 2016 at Kedai Kita Makassar. Data was collected using survey of 63 members of KOSEMA, followed by interview of 13 respondents through face to face interview, mobile phone interview, and social media (Blackberry Messenger, Facebook and Whatsapp) as well as observing their interaction and content of their conversation in the social media group owned by KOSEMA. The study indicates that the two most dominant language variants used and influencing the social cohesion are sociolect acrolect and sociolect vulgar, proven by the high percentage of acquisition results in each indicator of social cohesion, 98,38% (for acrolect) and 83,87% (for vulgar). Although sociolect acroletc and sociolect vulgar are mutually contradictory, they play a significant role in enhancing social cohesion among KOSEMA members as long as it is used in the right situation and with the right person. The use of sociolect acrolect is generally favored by all members of KOSEMA because it is considered polite and respectful for speakers and listeners, especially by female members. Even so, the presence of sociolect vulgar is always looked forward as an atmosphere warmer, especially among male members.

Abstract

This modern era, people are demanded to have more than one language especially English as an international language. In educational context, developing the students' ability to master English, it cannot be separated from vocabulary mastery because it can be a measurement of students, understanding of English. This research is conducted to determine the implementation of mapping words technique effectiveness in improving the student's vocabulary mastery at the third Year Students of SMK Darussalam Makassar. This quasi-experimental research used two group designs named pre-test and post-test. 60 out of 287 students as being registered as a sample. The experimental group consists of 32 students, and the control group consists of 28 students. This research applied the Mapping Words technique as the medium while the other class using the conventional method. The result of this research showed that the use of the Mapping Words technique effectively improves the students’ vocabulary, it was shown from the result of pre-test and post-test in both groups. The mean scores and standard deviation of the experimental class showed improvement where the two mean scores' deviation was/. The value of the t-test was 4.37, while the value of the t-table was 2.021 on the level of significant 0.05 (95%) and 2.704 on the level significant 0.01 (99%). This figure indicated that the value of t-calculated was higher than the t-value of t-table 4.37 > 2.021 and 2.704.

Abstract

The covid-19 pandemic that hit the world including Indonesia has caused the teaching and learning system change from face-to-face in the classroom to distance learning or online learning. Online learning requires teachers and students to be able to use the information and communication technology (ICT). In ELT, the learning system is also implemented online. One of platforms commonly used in online communication is e-mail. This current study aims to describe: (1) teacher’s perceptions about the use of e-mail as a learning medium in ELT, (2) students’ perceptions about the use of e-mail as a learning medium in ELT. The subjects of this descriptive qualitative research were an EFL teacher and 20 students at a senior high school in Barru. For collecting data, the researchers applied questionnaire, documentation, and interview. Data was analyzed inductively or qualitatively. The results indicated the teacher’s perceptions on the use of e-mail in learning that email is an effective device, e-mail can be used to send many documents, e-mail as a tool to achieve learning objectives, and e-mail makes learning easier. Students’ perceptions on the use of e-mail are e-mail can be used for getting learning materials, e-mail is easy to use, and students can access various assignments on email. However, a small number of students still encountered obstacles in using email as a learning medium.

Abstract

Main problem discussed in this study was the comparison of noun clauses in English and Bahasa Indonesia. The comparison aimed to find similarities and differences in the syntactic field that the noun clauses have in the two languages. This research applied contrastive analysis and the method was library research. The research instrument were noun clauses in English, Bahasa Indonesia and other linguistic issues especially books and internet citation supporting the main topic. The data analyzed by applying several theories in Content Analysis. This research found that English and Indonesian noun clauses cannot stand alone by themselves as sentences, they are introduced by conjunction and they need main clauses to produce sense. In terms of differences, English noun clause can function as objective complement but Indonesian noun clause cannot perform such function. English noun clause can be used as subject whereas Indonesian noun clause can be used as subject but introduced by any introductory words, the introductory word in English noun clause used as appositive cannot be omitted whereas the introductory word in Indonesian noun clause used as appositive can be omitted; the preposition in Indonesian noun clause used as object of preposition can be omitted whereas the preposition in English noun clause cannot be omitted.

Abstract

Writing is a skill that requires students to keep on practice. This research is held to answer research questions as follow: (1) What are the writing problems that common appear to the 1st semester students of English Education program of Universitas Muslim Maros in the academic year 2020-2021, and (2) What are the possible factors which cause those students’ problems in writing. This research was conducted in qualitative way. Since this research was conducted during pandemic of Corona Virus 19, Google Classroom application was also used as an instrument. The participants’ selection is based on non-probability sampling based on their availability, time flexibility, convenient and represent some characteristics to ease the writer’s investigation. The writer then analyzed the results of the observation and the interview descriptively. Results of this research showed that (1) most of the students were facing difficulties in Word Chosen, then (2) the main error the students mostly made especially on Grammatical related to connectors, pronoun references and correct verb, (3) whereas on Mechanical the students made mistakes on punctuation, spelling and capitalization. To another research question, this research revealed factors which contributed problems to the students in writing are lack of practice, time distribution and less motivated. Abstract

This research aimed to find out the topic and the function of small talk that was used by the students. The method of the research was qualitative descriptive. This research took place in the English Education of Graduate Program, State University of Makassar. The data collected through recording the interaction of small talk naturally by recording. The result showed that most of the topics discussed during the small talk were about the immediate situation of the talk. The topic of small talk can be either shift to the external situation such as the latest news, economics, hobbies, sports, movies or celebrities, and communicational situations. And from this research, the researcher found some topics like movies and asking for files. Besides that, the function of small talk specifically in class serves as an ice-breaking and silence-filling function.
