Abstract

A novel is a story that is related to real or fictional events imagined by the author through their observation of reality. The analysis of this present article aims to describe the magnitude of the characterization effect through a character figure and the position of the characters in the novel "Bumi Manusia" by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. The method used in this research is character description to explain individual characteristics tendency and the condition of a group more accurately, particularly the characters called Minke, Annelies, and Nyai Ontosoroh; the three most prominent figures. As the lead character, Minke fights against injustice; readers’ realize a most valuable lesson, seen in page 12, which says, “My personality becomes more different from my countrymen in general, violating my form as a Javanese person.”

Abstract

This research is based on the needs to analyze and evaluate students’ ability in applying unity and coherence aspect in a scientific essay. This is because unity and coherence aspect become important thing in a paragraph, essay, or other kinds of composition. This research aims at analyzing students’ ability in applying unity and coherence aspect in a scientific essay. 52 students at semester 5in 2016/2017 academic year of English Education Department Faculty of Teachers Training and Education University of Lancang Kuning were the participants in this study. Test and interview were used to collect the data. The data from the test was analyzed by using scoring rubric and the data from the interview was explained descriptively. The result showed that the students’ ability in applying unity and coherence was categorized into good level. The students’ average score was 74.9. Furthermore, from the interview, it can be stated that students were able to write an essay well with good unity and coherence. It was basically influenced by good understanding about unity and coherence. Then, the students did writing practice at leisure time more and more. In conclusion, it can be stated that the students’ ability in applying unity and coherence in writing a scientific essay is in good level with average score 74.9.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating EFL learners’ ability in generating, organizing, and elaborating ideas of argumentative essay. Quantitative method with descriptive quantitative design was employed in this study. To collect the data, the writing test and unstructured interview were used in this research. This research was conducted on April 2018 at Universitas Lancang Kuning, Pekanbaru. There were 46 learners selected as participants in this research. The result of the writing test showed that the learners’ mean score was 64.6 and it was categorized into low level of ability. Moreover, based on the interview the learners said that they felt difficult in elaborating ideas as well as organize the ideas in a good order. It was beacuse the learners had low alertness and carefulness in writing, low motivation to write an essay, low confidence when writing, and seldom to practice writing at leisure time. Therefore, appropriate writing strategy supported by suitable learning media is needed to facilitate and improve the learners’ ability in writing the essay. In conclusion, the learners’ ability in generating, organizing, and elaborating ideas is in low level of ability.

Abstract

This research is based on the students’ problems in writing argumentative essay, especially in developing and organizing ideas, using good grammar and diction, and applying correct writing mechanics, such as the use of capital letter, spelling, and punctuation. The purpose of this research is to solve the students’ problems in writing argumentative essay through collaborative writing strategy. The design employed in this research was classroom action research. The participants involved in this research were 23 students of English Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Lancang Kuning Pekanbaru, Indonesia. The instruments used in this research were writing test, field note, observation checklist, and interview. Based on the result of the test, the students’ score had reached the criteria of success set, and it was significantly improved from the result before the research conducted. The mean score of the mid-term test was 54.9, and the mean score of the cycle test was 74.3. In addition, based on the data gained from the field note, observation checklist, and interview, it was found that the students were active, creative, and enjoy the learning process. In conclusion, the use of collaborative writing strategy can solve the students’ problems in writing argumentative essay as well.Keywords: writing skill; writing aspects; argumentative essay; collaborative writing strategy;  classroom action research.

Abstract

The precarious and critical period of the initiation of Discourse Analysis was populer at the end of the 1990s and the beginning of 2000s. Various approaches and frameworks were proposed during the time especially in the field of Applied Linguistics. This is including Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) as one of its leading areas.  This present study aimed at exploring and catching out how the CDA’ presentation in overall related to Media studies and how it can be applicable to uncover an unseen ideologies while examining the existence of media discourse studies. The study is considering 25 journal studies to scrutinize the ways and methods used in discern social phenomena while illuminating the true characteristics of the social actors. As result, it was revealed that  CDA is used openly to expose ideologies that somehow differentiate oppressed groups by offering a dummy image used by the highest authority or elite.Keywords: CDA; ideology; media discourse; social actors; power.

Abstract

Students’ blog in PBIG Unilak have been used to promote English skills during these two years. This mixed method study aimed to identify and describes the major problems faced by the students during the implementation of blogging based class. This study based its data from 168 students who attended 5 different classes based-blog. Employing a total sampling technique, the students were invited to fill up online questionnaire and interview. However, only 161 feedbacks can be processed. The analysis in this study reveals there are three major problems in blog-based class, which significantly contributed to an unproductive learning process atmosphere at PBIG Unilak namely: Lack of confidence in posting article and comments in the blog; Lack of IT skills and Cyberbullying.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini didasari dengan adanya permasalahan dan kebutuhan guru-guru SMK Negeri 1 Kandis dalam hal model pembelajaran berbasis informasi teknologi (IT). Para guru di sekolah mitra memiliki pengetahuan yang minim terhadap model pembelajaran berbasis IT. Dan, para guru tersebut memiliki waktu yang kurang untuk mengikuti pelatihan atau workshop dikarenakan kesibukan mengajar dan mengurus kegiatan administrasi sehari-hari. Target luaran dari kegiatan ini adalah publikasi ilmiah pada jurnal nasional khusus pengabdian masyarakat ber-ISSN. Seiring dengan hal tersebut, kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini dilakukan selama kurang lebih 1 tahun, mulai dari melakukan tahap analisis situasi, melakukan pelatihan, hingga pembuatan luaran kegiatan pengabdian. Kegiatan analisis situasi berupa observasi lapangan dan wawancara kepada guru, kemudian kegiatan pelatihan meliputi kegiatan pelatihan dan pendampingan penerapan model pembelajaran berbasis Online Collaborative Learning, dan disertai dengan diskusi dan tanya jawab kepada peserta kegiatan. Terakhir, pembuatan luaran kegiatan berupa penulisan artikel ilmiah yang dipublikasikan di jurnal ilmiah nasional ber-ISSN.

Abstract

Microteaching merupakan mata kuliah wajib yang harus diperoleh oleh mahasiswa. Sebagai calon guru dituntut untuk dapat mengajar dan mempraktekkan sistem pengelolaan kelas dengan baik. Oleh karena itu mahasiswa diharapkan mampu untuk menerapkan Siklus Perencanaan, Pelaksanaan, Evaluasi, Pengendalian, Peningkatan (PPEPP) pada mata kuliah microteaching. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mendesin RPP dan system pengelolan microteacing dengan siklus PPEPP. Penelitian ini adalah penelitiadeskriptif kuantitatif dengan sampel sebanyak 38 mahasiswa. Dari hasil penelitian ditemukan bahwa rata-rata kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mendesain RPP dan pengelolaan kelas microteaching pada setiap indikator siklus PPEPP adalah 62.55 yang dapat dikategorikan cukup. Pada indikator perencanaan skor rata-rata mahasiswa adalah 16,9 (27%), rata-rata kemampuan mahasiswa pada indikator pelaksanaan adalah 23,7 (38%), sedangkan pada indikator evaluasi, rata-rata kemampuan mahasiswa adalah 9,1 (15%), kemudian pada indikator pengendalian, rata-rata kemampuan mahasiswa adalah 6,1 (10%), dan terakhir pada indikator peningkatan, rata-rata kemampuan mahasiswa adalah 6,8 (11%). Jadi dapat disimpulkan bahwa rata-rata kemampuan mahasiswa dalam mendesain RPP dan pengelolaan microteaching dengan siklus PPEPP dikategorikan cukup.

Abstract

Penelitian ini didasari dengan adanya kebutuhan untuk mengevaluasi capaian pembelajaran mata kuliah yang berada dalam kategori Writing Skill, seperti: Paragraph Writing, Composition and Essay Writing, Argumentative Writing, dan Thesis Writing. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi kualitas tulisan ilmiah mahasiswa. Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah rancangan penelitian deskriptif. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan angket dan panduan wawancara. Yang menjadi partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah alumni (lulusan) Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (FKIP) Universitas Lancang Kuning (UNILAK) pada Tahun Akademik 2020/2021. Jumlah alumni tersebut adalah sebanyak 36 orang. Data yang telah dikumpulkan melalui angket dan wawancara dianalisis secara deskriptif. Hasil penelitian ini menujukkan bahwa, terdapat faktor eksternal dan internal yang menghambat keterampilan menulis mahasiswa. Hal ini didukung oleh data dari wawancara bahwa kesulitan mahasiswa dalam menulis tulisan ilmiah itu, secara umumnya memang dipengaruhi oleh faktor eksternal dan internal tadi, seperti kurangnya rasa percaya diri, kurangnya pengetahuan dalam menemukan referensi bacaan, kurangnya pengetahuan dalam hal penggunaan tata bahasa, kosakata, dan mekanisme penulisan yang benar, serta minimnya waktu untuk latihan menulis. Berdasarkan temuan ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa faktor eksternal dan internal menjadi faktor penentu dan yang paling berpengaruh terhadap kualitas tulisan ilmiah mahasiswa.
