Abstract

This study investigates how religion (Islam) is understood, confessed, and practiced to interact positively with local cultures and the concept of the nation as a uniting factor of the people in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative method by reviewing relevant literature, conducting observation, and interviewing informants in various higher education institutions on Java Island. Data were taken from Islamic Religious Education (IRE) or Pendidikan Agama Islam (PAI) course, interview with students and lecturers, and the course’s accompanying programs administered by public and private universities in Java. The results of the study show that Islamic religiosity and appreciation of local cultures within the frame of Indonesia as a nation can go hand in hand. This mindset is achieved through a religious education course and its extra or co-curricular programs at universities in Indonesia, which aligns with the agenda of building the nation through being religious and maintaining harmony in diverse Indonesian society.

Abstract

The platform of religious moderatism continues to be widely used in the university context as a means to spread wasathiyah religious ideas. This study explores the role of religious institutional activities in fostering religious moderation as a strategic response to the growing influence of transnational Islamic ideologies within Indonesian higher education. Focusing on three prominent public universities Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ), and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM). This qualitative research employs a multiple case study approach supported by document analysis, Focus Group Discussion, and observation. The findings reveal that while each institution adopts distinct approaches shaped by their unique socio-cultural and ideological contexts, all three share a commitment to embedding the principles of religious moderation into religious activities. UPI institutionalizes religious programs within the academic structure, UNJ emphasizes inclusivity and diversity, whereas UM integrates values of tolerance and contextual learning. The study affirms that structured mentoring programs rooted in the university’s religious and cultural frameworks are instrumental in shaping students’ moderate religious outlooks. The implications suggest that religious moderation must be mainstreamed into curricular and extracurricular domains through policies that respect institutional contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the social adaptation of the community to the Living Islam culture in the environment of Al Fatah Temboro Islamic Boarding School. This study employed a qualitative approach with field research as its research design. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving two main informants: an Islamic teacher who actively participates in the boarding school environment and a native resident of Temboro. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data credibility was strengthened through source and technique triangulation. The findings show that the Living Islam culture in Temboro is reflected in congregational worship, Islamic preaching activities, religious traditions during Ramadan and Muharram, Qur’an reading practices, and Islamic dress. The community adapts through habituation, social interaction, role models provided by boarding school figures, and participation in boarding school activities. This adaptation encourages changes in community life toward a more religious environment, structures public visual identities, reshapes local livelihoods, and strengthens social relations based on structural-functional stability between the boarding school and local residents. The study indicates that Islamic boarding schools play an important role as centers of education, Islamic preaching, socio-economic restructuring, and socio-religious cultural formation.
