Abstract

Abstract

Narrative texts imply life lessons in each of their stories. Hence, students are expected to understand the text and capture the moral message of life contained in the text. Reading narrative text needs particular strategy to determine the moral message behind text. One of the strategies is semantic mapping. Semantic Mapping helps teachers direct the students not only to focus on the details of each keyword but also on the structure of the text. It shows a connection between ideas and story components. This study investigated the effectiveness of using semantic mapping strategy for improving students’ reading skill on narrative text. It used a quasi-experimental design. The population of this study was 51 students of SMP Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo consisting of 25 students from class VIII-H as experimental class and 26 students from class VIII-I as control class. In this study, the pre-test, treatments, and post-test given to both experimental and control classes. The data were analyzed by using T-test for using SPSS 16.00 Windows to know the sinificant difference of the students’ reading comprehension text between experimental and control class. The finding showed that semantic mapping strategy is an effective way in improving students’ comprehension on reading narrative text.

Abstract

One of the main challenges that lecturers face in preparing for doctoral studies is meeting the requirements for English proficiency certificates, such as TOEFL, which often require high scores. This challenge is mainly felt by lecturers who are not graduates of the English study program. To help address this issue, the Community Service (PkM) program aims to enhance the English proficiency of lecturers at Universitas Nurul Jadid through e-learning-based TOEFL mentoring based on e-learning and Zoom Meeting. The method of implementing this program includes the stage of planning, implementation, as well as monitoring and evaluation, with a total of 33 lecturers from Universitas Nurul Jadid. This program involves the use of online learning technology to facilitate learning flexibility, considering the lecturers’ busy schedules with teaching and administrative responsibilities. The results of the program showed a significant improvement in participants' TOEFL scores from pre-test to post-test. Formative and summative evaluation data, including mid-test and post-test, indicate that this technology-based approach effectively enhances lecturers’ English proficiency. The program not only managed to achieve its main goal but also provided insights for the development of similar programs in the future.

Abstract

This study explores the personal journey of an Indonesia student, pseudonymously named Arka, as he developed English-speaking competence through a combination of environmental immersion, emotional resilience, and strategic learning behaviors. Using a narrative inquiry approach and grounded in Oxfords (1990) language learning strategy framework, this research highlights how Arka evolved from a disinterested English learner in junior high school to a confident, fluent speaker and top graduate in English Education. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, document analysis, and peer verification to ensure validity. The findings reveal that Arkas language development was shaped by a dynamic use of direct and indirect learning strategies, including memory, cognitive, compensation, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. his experience underscores the critical role of learning environments, personal motivation, and emotional regulation in mastering English-speaking skills. This research offers practical insights for language teachers, learners, and researchers by demonstrating how individual experiences and self-directed strategy use can bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real-world communicative competence.

Abstract

While studies on identity construction and classroom participation among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners are abundant, limited attention has been given to how students with hearing impairments experience these processes within religious educational contexts. Addressing this gap, the study explored how an Indonesian female EFL student with a hearing impairment constructed her identity and participated in classroom learning in an Islamic-based school. Drawing on data from in-depth semi-structed interviews, the study employed Braun and Clarks (2006) thematic analysis to interpret the participants lived experiences. The finding reveal that the participants identity developed through a series of stages: the orientation, the adjustment, the difficulty, the settlement, and identity development. Her identity construction was shaped by emotional resilience, religious values, and strong support from family, peers, and teachers. In parallel, her classroom participation evolved from passive observation to active involvement through adaptive strategies, such as preparing questions and engaging in peer interaction. This study illustrated how identity construction and classroom participation are intertwined, particularly for students with disabilities navigating inclusive learning environments. It also underscored the importance of culturally and religiously responsive support systems in fostering self-growth and academic among marginalized learners.

Abstract

English is a compulsory subject in junior high schools, yet many institutions, including Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), rely on non-English teachers due to limited qualified staff. This study aims to investigate the experiences of non-English teachers in teaching English at MTs Nurul Jadid, focusing on the challenges faced and the strategies implemented to improve student comprehension. Using a qualitative phenomenological design with interviews and observations, the study found that the main challenges were student fatigue due to intensive Islamic boarding school activities and low learning motivation. Teachers addressed these challenges through adaptive classroom management, contextual and interactive learning, and continuous self-development. These findings highlight that with commitment, professional awareness, and adaptability, non-English teachers can teach English effectively in an Islamic boarding school context.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) integration on the professional identity and well-being of lecturers teaching academic writing in higher education. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved three lecturers from different institutions in East Java. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal that lecturers respond to AI integration adaptively and reflectively. Rather than rejecting the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT or Grammarly, they selectively incorporate them into their teaching practices to support idea generation and increase task efficiency. However, they also express concerns regarding the authenticity of student writing and the shifting nature of their pedagogical roles. Second, the study also finds that lecturers undergo an ongoing negotiation of their professional identities. They reconceptualize their roles not merely as technical instructors but as facilitators of digital literacy and academic ethics. In doing so, they strive to uphold professional values, despite facing institutional and collegial pressures. Moreover, exposure to AI has an ambivalent effect on lecturers' well-being. While it generates anxiety and social disconnection, it also stimulates renewed motivation and creativity in teaching. This study highlights the importance of institutional support and reflective spaces that enable educators to.
