Abstract

Due to the complexity of writing skill, EFL students, especially in Aceh, face a lot of problems in composing a text such as a recount text resulting in abundant errors of both interlingual and intralingual interferences. Considering this, this study aims at identifying the types of interlingual and intralingual errors committed by the students in writing recount text. Based on the results found in the written samples collected from 60 students, it was found that from 16 sorts of error categories, the students committed 1143 occurrences of errors. The types of interlingual errors collected were in reference to orthographic errors, lexical errors, and grammatical errors, while the type of intralingual errors was overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application of rules, and false concepts hypothesis. All of these were caused by the lack of vocabulary and having no idea of the right words for their ideas, and hence, they just directly translated their story literally from bahasa to English. Therefore, both teachers and students should be aware of this condition. Moreover, the creativity of the teachers in enhancing students’ vocabulary and using it in context is truly required. Hence, these problems can be resolved in the best way.

Abstract

Mass media have been regarded as playing crucial roles in introducing and promoting foreign terms into Indonesian. It can be seen that many magazines have been mostly influenced by English through code mixing to make the writing become more prestigious and cool. This present study aims at investigating the types of code mixing used in a magazine. It employs the three types of code mixing, proposed by Musyken’s (2000), which are: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. The data were taken from Aplaus magazine in four editions from April to July 2016 on the Journey Section. In collecting the data, the occurrence of English code mixing in one of the sections in the magazine was noted, and the data were then classified and tabulated. The results of this research show that not all of three types of code mixing by Musyken (2000) were applicable in the Aplaus magazine. There are 36 insertion types found or about 76.6%, 11 or about 23.4% for alternation, and no case of congruent lexicalization appeared. Thus, the dominant type of code mixing used in the magazine was insertion.

Abstract

Comprehending English text is still regarded as hard for students. Metacognitive strategies have been considered effective in overcoming reading difficulties by many researchers. The objective of this study is to describe the application of three types of metacognitive reading strategies (global strategies, problem solving strategies, and support strategies) used by the students of Senior High School (SMAN) 1 Ingin Jaya, Aceh Besar. It is a descriptive qualitative study. Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) questionnaire suggested by Mokhtari and Reichard (2002) was used to collect the data. The result of the study revealed that the students generally showed moderate awareness of all strategies and held a preference of using Problem Solving Strategies, followed by Support Strategies and Global Strategies respectively. The study also showed that high performance students used the strategies more frequently than low performance students. It can be concluded that the more students aware of using metacognitive reading strategies, the better their performance is in reading skill. Therefore, teaching the students to use metacognitive strategies can be a solution in enhancing students’ reading ability.
