Abstract

Communication skill nowadays becomes a must that everyone should master. The agreement of such conceptual meaning in communication should meet the same perception among speakers. One of the tools to improve one’s communication skill is by learning pronunciation through Reading Aloud for misperception emerged from mispronunciation can be avoided. This research aims at improving English pronunciation through reading aloud in the form of short texts. The research was carried out in Statistics Data Center (BPS) by employing A Classroom Action Research with two cycles of assessments. There were 20 IT engineers of Networking Operation Center with various background of knowledge as an object of the research. The data was collected by observation, note taking, and test. Questionnaire is designed and administered to identify the participants’ core and frequency of English tasks and also to investigate participants’ previous experiences with English. Findings show that there is an improvement on participants’ pronunciation skill through Reading Aloud as it can be seen from the increase of a mean score on the second cycle with 77.75 that is considered as good predicate.

Abstract

The research aimed at determining the significant effect of implemented Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) in developing students’ communicative competence in SMK Islam Wijaya Kusuma Jakarta. The students’ communicative competence was measured quantitatively by conducting the experiment method. There were 47 of the eleventh-grade students as samples chosen randomly by using purposive sampling technique. The data were performed by using the test instrument with two groups on post-test design; one group became the experiment class and the other group became the control class. The questionnaire was assigned to students at the end of the lesson. The post-poster cycle assessment was given as a basis of measurement in analyzing students’ communicative competence. The data were analyzed by using t-test two tailed formula to find out the significant difference of each class of the sample (simple effect). Findings have shown that there is a significant effect of using PWIM to students’ communicative competence which is reflected from the enhancement of students’ comprehension toward the pronunciation, fluency, grammar, vocabulary as well as the increase of their motivation and creativity experiencing thelearning process more communicatively.

Abstract

The research aimed to determine the influence of positive language to promote the effective language teaching classrooms in state junior high school. The effective language teaching classroom was measured quantitatively by applying a correlational research design. The method conducted several steps as procedures of investigation in analyzing the data, namely: (1) data collection,(2) data analysis, and (3) data interpretation. Engaged by 142 students of eighth-grade and four language teachers, findings have shown that there is a positive correlation between positive language and effective language teaching classrooms. The results are hoped to be as teachers’ and students’ guidance in implementing positive language to building their effective language teaching classrooms, gaining their confidence and ability to learn and use knowledge and skills to interact and fully participate in education.

Abstract

Sekolah boarding tradisional atau dikenal dengan nama pesantren tradisional, adalah Lembaga Pendidikan pertama dan utama di Indonesia sejak bertahun-tahun yang lalu. Di dalam pesantren, terdapat dua pembelajaran utama, yaitu: pembelajaran Quran dan Hadis sebagai pedoman utama kehidupan, dan penyampaian isi Quran dan Hadis dalam bentuk dakwah. Sejalan dengan perubahan zaman, pesantren tradisional juga mengalami perubahan ke arah yang lebih modern, walaupun tidak sedikit pesantren yang masih bertahan dengan ketradisionalan model dan sistem pendidikannya. Namun demikian, pesantren tradisional dituntut untuk berubah dan berkembang dalam menghadapi tantangan dan perubahan zaman yang begitu cepat. Untuk itu, kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilakukan sebagai implementasi pembelajaran Berbicara Bahasa Inggris pada pesantren tradisional sebagai satu alat dalam berdakwah di dunia internasional. Berlokasi di wilayah perbatasan antara Jakarta dan Depok, kegiatan ini melibatkan 40 santri laki-laki, 2 orang mubaligh, dan seorang mahasiswa calon guru Bahasa Inggris. Dengan menggunakan metode Participatory Action Research (PAR) dengan analisis deskripsi, kegiatan ini meliputi tiga langkah kegiatan, yaitu: perencanaan, aksi kegiatan, dan evaluasi kegiatan. Berdasarkan jawaban santri pada kuesioner dan tes, terdapat 32 santri yang terlibat di dalam kegiatan dan menunjukkan kebutuhan dan perubahan yang signifikan dalam pembelajaran berbicara Bahasa Inggris. Sebesar 87.5% santri yang menunjukkan sangat membutuhkan pembelajaran berbicara Bahasa Inggris sebagai materi pembelajaran tambahan utama untuk memperkaya pengetahuan santri dan meningkatkan kepercayaan diri santri sebagai bagian dari perubahan dunia sekaligus memperkenalkan nilai-nilai Islam kepada dunia, sebagai media dakwah di dunia internasional.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah kelanjutan dari kegiatan yang pernah dilakukan sebelumnya tentang penggunaan Bahasa positif. Pengabdian kali ini dilaksanakan dengan lebih komprehensif yaitu dengan mempertimbangkan satu fenomena yang sedang marak dihadapi oleh para ibu yang memiki anak-anak generasi millennial, yaitu penggunaan gawai digital secara bijaksana. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan pada ruang lingkup informal yaitu kalangan para ibu di Yayasan Baitul Hasan Jagakarsa yang berjumlah sekitar 47 orang peserta. Tujuan dari diadakannya kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah sebagai berikut: 1) mengetahui dan mengevaluasi implementasi Bahasa positif peserta; 2) mengetahui dan mengevaluasi penggunaan gawai digital di kalangan peserta; dan 3) menyusun acuan Bahasa positif dan penggunaan gawai digital dan bijaksana bagi para peserta. Dengan menggunakan instrumen kuesioner dan metode diskusi, kegiatan ini memperlihatkan bahwa sebagian besar dari para peserta telah mengimplementasikan penggunaan Bahasa positif dan mengatur penggunaan gawai cerdas oleh anak-anak dengan bijaksana. Namun demikian, masih terdapat peserta yang belum mengetahui cara mengimplementasikan Bahasa positif dan mengatur jadwal penggunaan gawai digital secara bijaksana. Oleh karena itu, dengan kegiatan ini, peserta mampu mengimplementasikan Bahasa positif dan mengatur jadwal penggunaan gawai digital bagi anak mereka dengan tepat. Dengan demikian, peran ibu dalam membangun karakter terbaik anak menjadi semakin berkualitas dan tidak tergantikan.

Abstract

Language is a basic need to our existence of life since speaking, listening, reading, and writing are such fundamental aspects of our daily lives. Those aspects are substantial in establishing social interaction and seizing fabulous achievements as well. However, some people suffered from injured brain, mental retardation, and autism who experienced difficulties such as speech disorder and language disorder. This research was designed to identify types of words utterances and types of language disorder that produced by an autistic savant character in the Rain Man movie. By conducting qualitative research with psycholinguistic approaches, this study revealed the autistic savant characters of the producing utterances, namely articulation disorder, phonological disorder, voice disorder and repetition. By developing people’s knowledge and awareness on the autistic language disorder, this study enlightened people to communicate and understand autistic person in their surroundings and prevented miscommunication as well. Further research is expected to be administered, particularly on an autistic woman to explore comprehensive knowledge and understanding on autistic language disorder.

Abstract

As the world has been shocked by the unexpected rapid disease named COVID-19, several emergency actions are conducted in all aspects of human lives, including in the education field. In Indonesia, all colleges, particularly in several red-zone areas such as Jakarta, are restricted accessed for several months ahead. All activities inside the institutions’ building are limited, and face-to-face classrooms are forbidden and changed into virtual classrooms or called Learning from Home Environments (LHE). Regarding the situation, this research is promoting LHE with the use of Google Classroom application as a free available media in teaching English basic grammar course for EFL undergraduates. This research was participated by 60 students of English Education Program, Universitas Indraprasta PGRI (Unindra), located in Jakarta, Indonesia. The research administered a convergent mixed-method research design by collecting data in two cycles that accumulated through tests and questionnaires. Based on research questions, a correlational analysis and a narrative analysis were allocated. The results indicate an interesting output on students’ course engagement and course understanding. Supported by several practical and simple features, Google Classroom becomes a promising and favorite tool in learning English from home environments during the pandemic period.Keywords: Learning from home environments, google classroom application, EFL undergraduates, virtual classroom, pandemic period

Abstract

As one of the Indonesian honors, puppetry arts are supposed to be socialized and preserved for future generations. It needs creative, interactive, and digital-based media due to the fast and unstoppable global changes. This research aimed to demonstrate the use of YouTube as one of the interesting and interactive media platforms in learning the puppetry arts independently for the duo puppeteer brothers, Prama and Rafi. By applying a qualitative research design with narrative analysis, this research had literally observed, virtually interviewed, and digitally documented a set of questionnaires to the duo puppeteer brothers. Several data were also collected from secondary sources such as YouTube channels and online news. Unlike other little puppeteers who learn the puppetry arts in a studio, the results revealed that the duo puppeteer brothers had never joined any puppetry arts studio. At the age of 16 and 13 years old, they have been learning the puppetry arts through YouTube channels for years to identify different styles of professional puppeteers in performing the puppets’ shows. Using YouTube channels, the duo puppeteer brothers enjoy the puppetry arts learning and could preserve the national noble values and culture.

Abstract

Promoting effective English teaching classroom is one of the teachers’ concerns which is positive classroom environment for the sake of achieving success in English teaching and learning process. Beyond the presence of the advanced technology and information, teacher’s performance is still the main variable in promoting the effective English teaching classroom. Thus, the research aims at determining the influence of teacher’s performance to promote the effective English teaching classroom in state junior high school. The teacher’s performance focuses in teacher’s personality and teacher’s language. The effective English teaching classroom is measured quantitatively by applying correlational research design. The method conducts several steps as procedures of investigation in analyzing the data, namely: 1) data collection, 2) data analysis, and 3) data interpretation. Engaged by 71 students of eighth grade and 2 English teachers, findings have shown that there is a significant correlation between teacher’s performance and effective English teaching classroom. The results are hoped to be as teachers’ and students’ contributions in establishing their effective English teaching classroom; gaining their confidence and ability to learn; and use knowledge and skills to interact and to fully participate in education.

Abstract

Teaching English as a Foreign Language for students in English Education Program sounds less difficult. However, teaching English for Academic Writing that students have to develop their original writings in the form of essays is a great challenge. Most students do not know where to start their writings, how to generate their thoughts, and even how to manage their sentence by sentence in sequence. This study was administered to enhance students’ critical thinking in developing variety essays as the basic writings through Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). Engaged by 54 students of English Education Program in sixth semester, the study was measured quantitatively and qualitatively with mix method analysis. The PWIM was applied to inductively generate and improve students’ critical thinking comprised in 2 cycles for two different essay genres which were descriptive essay, and compare and contrast essay. Findings showed that there were 41 students in first cycle and 52 students in second cycle, inductively improved their critical thinking and interestingly experienced new process of writing through the use of PWIM.
