Abstract

This study aims to analyze the multicollinearity of environmental variables in the Bakongan-Bengkung Forest, part of the Leuser Ecosystem, to understand its implications for the habitat of key species such as Sumatran elephants, Sumatran rhinoceros, Sumatran tigers, and Sumatran orangutans. The research was conducted in August 2023 across an area of 75.912,46 hectares spanning three districts in Aceh. The data utilized includes elevation, slope, river density estimation, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), distance from roads, and annual rainfall, sourced from various geospatial datasets. Data processing was performed using ArcGIS 10.3, Google Earth Engine (GEE), and RStudio 4.2.2. Multicollinearity testing was carried out using Pearson correlation coefficients to identify relationships between environmental variables. The analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between elevation and annual rainfall, with a correlation coefficient of 0,724, indicating a strong linear relationship. This correlation suggests that higher elevations in the area are associated with increased rainfall, likely due to orographic effects. These findings are crucial for conservation planning and habitat management for wildlife. The correlation between elevation and annual rainfall should be considered when developing accurate habitat models for key species in the Bakongan-Bengkung Forest, to ensure effective and sustainable conservation strategies.

Abstract

PThe Sumatran tiger is an apex predator that has an important role as a controller of ecosystem balance. Tigers are highly adaptive wildlife, so they can be found in various habitat types, ranging from tropical forests, swamps, mangroves, to grasslands in the Himalayan foothills. This study aims to determine the habitat conditions of Sumatran tiger prey animals in Terangun - Beutong as an alternative to one of the Sumatran tiger release locations. Data collection was carried out for 1 year in July 2022-2023. The data used in this study are data on the presence of tigers and prey animals at the research location. The equipment used for Sumatran tiger data collection are maps of the study area, Global Positioning System/GPS, manual compass, karmantel rope, data tabulation sheet/tallysheet, stationery, surveillance cameras, digital cameras for documentation, mattresses, sleeping bags, hammocks, tents, cooking utensils, field clothes, raincoats, and carrier bags. Data analysis was conducted using ArcGIS 10.3 software, by selecting spatial analysis work. The research results of this research modeling show that the Terangun - Beutong area is one of the areas that has potential habitat for Sumatran tigers.

Abstract

Community empowerment through eco-print training by utilizing local plants aims to improve the skills and knowledge of the community in processing natural materials into value-added products. The training focused on the eco-print technique, which is a natural printing method that uses the potential leaves and local plants to create unique designs on fabrics. By utilizing local resources, participants not only learn new skills, but are also expected to develop sustainable creative enterprises with cultural relevance. The program involves active participation from the community, allowing them to share experiences and knowledge by conducted hands-on workshops on the eco-print technique, as well as build business networks. The results of the training showed an increase in participants' abilities in eco-print techniques and understanding of the importance of environmental sustainability. Through this initiative, the community is expected to support the increase their income by facilitated collaboration and business network development among participants for long-term growth, preserve local plants, and contribute to cultural and environmental preservation.

Abstract

Mangroves are coastal forest ecosystems found in tropical and subtropical regions. such as the city of Banda Aceh. Based on their habitat, mangroves are a type of wetland forest that can store large amounts of carbon. The purpose of this study is to determine the structure of mangrove vegetation in the city of Banda Aceh through NDVI analysis. The analysis method used was NDVI and sample observation using plots. The results of the analysis show that the vegetation structure is directly proportional to the NDVI value. Areas with high NDVI values are dominated by tree, while areas with low NDVI values are dominated by seedling. Keywords:MangroveVegetationNDVI

Abstract

Urban forests play a pivotal role in climate change mitigation by storing carbon in biomass. However, the economic valuation of this ecosystem service in Banda Aceh City remains underexplored. This study aims to quantify aboveground biomass carbon stocks and assess their economic value in six selected urban forests across the city. Non-destructive sampling was conducted using 20 × 20 m plots to measure tree diameter, estimate biomass using species-specific allometric equations, and calculate carbon content (C = 0.5 × B). A carbon price of US$50/ton was applied for economic valuation. The total carbon stock was estimated at 11,579 tons, with Putroe Phang Forest contributing the highest proportion (45%). The corresponding economic value was approximately IDR 3.42 billion. A strong positive correlation (R² = 0.9859) was observed between tree diameter and biomass. This study presents a novel economic perspective on urban forest carbon in Banda Aceh by integrating ecological data with financial valuation. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating carbon trading mechanisms into urban planning to strengthen ecosystem service assessments and climate policy implementation.

Abstract

This study investigates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, with a focus on carbon monoxide (CO), in Banda Aceh City to identify their sources and spatial distribution. Google Earth Engine (GEE) was utilized to process and analyze Sentinel-5P satellite data from November 2023 to November 2024. The results indicate that CO emissions are mainly generated by transportation, industrial activities, and forest fires, reflecting the significant influence of human activities on air quality. Spatial analysis reveals that northern coastal sub-districts, including Kutaraja, Kuta Alam, and Syiah Kuala, experience the highest CO concentrations, while Meuraxa and Jaya Baru show moderate levels, and southern and inland sub-districts such as Banda Raya, Ulee Kareng, and Lueng Bata exhibit low concentrations. The distribution pattern highlights the role of population density, economic activity, and land cover in shaping emission intensity. By leveraging near real-time satellite monitoring, this study provides detailed emission mapping that can guide urban air quality management and climate mitigation strategies. These findings serve as a valuable reference for policymakers and researchers in formulating emission reduction measures and enhancing climate resilience in urban environments.

Abstract

Each tribe has a tradition of ethnobotanical plant utilization and management, one of which is the Tamiang tribe. The community realizes the potential of plant utilization, thus creating considerable economic opportunities for bioprospection. This study used the Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method to collect data by actively involving the community. Semi-structured interview techniques were conducted to explore ethnobotanical information from the Tamiang tribe. From the results of the Slovin analysis, 600 respondents with an age range of 35 to 94 years were obtained. Snowball sampling was used to select respondents. Determination of Sub-district locations selected six Sub-districts from 12 Subdistricts by purposive sampling with the largest number of Tamiang Tribe. The results showed that there were 225 species from 74 families used by the Tamiang people in treating various diseases. The most commonly cured diseases are fever, diabetes, and hypertension. Tagetes erecta is the most widely recognized medicinal plant species with a relative citation frequency index of 1.00. At the same time, Andrographis elongata is the most frequently used medicinal plant by the local community with a use value index of 1.00. In addition, local people identified the leaf organ (60.89%) as the most commonly used part of the plant, while decoction (58.20%) was the most popular method of administering traditional medicine. Both species of Andrographis elongata and Moringa oleifera have the potential to treat diabetes and hypertension as seen from the highest ICS value as prospective plants in the utilization and management of medicinal plants, so they can be developed as raw materials for herbal medicine.
