Abstract

Globally in 2016, 22.9% or 154.8 million children under 5 years of age suffered from child stunting. The prevalence of stunting in Indonesia is 19.3% and in east java it reaches almost 30%. Negative effect of stunting cannot be repair or irreversibel, especially brain damage and the management of stunting is complex, so preventing and reducing child become stunting is more important. Analysis of growth patterns and the detection of aberrant growth patterns provide critical information for the detection of pathologic conditions. Weight-for-age is the most commonly used index of nutritional status. Weight loss, or failure to gain normally, is often the first sign of pathology. If routine weight measurements could be used to detect the risk of linear growth faltering, the role of posyandu in stunting prevention could be enhanced. Purpose of this study is to find a relationship of weight increment in 2, 3, 4, and 6 month and stunting in children aged 0-24 months. There was a significant correlation weight increment for 6 months with stunting (r= -0.432, p=0.004) Keywords: weight increment; stunting; growth interpretation

Abstract

Stunting is a condition in which children under five years old fail to thrive due to chronic malnutrition in the first 1000 days of life and the height is below the height chart (<-2 SD) on standard age. Although stunting has negative great impact on the child growth and development, parents frequently are not concert about it due to lack of information regarding stunting.  The COVID-19 pandemic also contributes on fulfillment of nutritious food, non-routine checks for the child growth and development at the posyandu, and even stopped posyandu activities. Therefore, it is still challenging to detect the incidence of stunting in the community. This program aims to increase the knowledge and raise awareness of the importance of the first 1000 days if life in a child's growth and development also to increase the cadre skill in the early detection of stunting. The community service activity was held in the area of the Morokrembangan Primary Health Center include health promotion and training for early detection of stunting through anthropometric examination for posyandu cadre, pregnancy mother and mother of under 5 years old child. Evaluation was done by measuring the increasing of participants knowledge about stunting through pretest and posttest. There was a significant difference (p = 0.000) between the pretest and posttest. It means that this program activities have succeeded in increasing the knowledge of mothers and cadre.  A better understanding of the first 1000 days of life can improve people's behavior to prevent stunting in community.

Abstract

Stunting is still a problem around the world, particularly Indonesia where the prevalence of stunting in 2020 was 26.92%. The short-term impact of stunting included an increased risk of morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases, while, long-term impacts of stunting can cause obesity, impaired cognitive function, and work productivity. One of the efforts to prevent stunting is the use of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook by pregnant women and children aged under 5 years which has not been implemented properly. This community service activity aims to provide training in filling out the MCH handbook and educate the public on the importance of monitoring stunting in babies and children. Methods for implementing this activity include lecture in presentation form, discussion, and training approaches. A pre-test and post-test were carried out before and after this activity. A total of 80 participants took part in this activity, including the Head of Kertosono District, the Head of Banaran Village, the Head of the Kertosono Community Health Center and his staff, health cadres, and mothers who have stunted children, consisting of 37 Banaran's health cadres and mothers with stunted toddlers (72% of total stunted children in Banaran). It was found that there was an increase in participants' ability to fill out the MCH Handbook; before the activity, the mean pre-test score was 77.03 ± 16.64 and the post-test score was 88.65 ± 12.508. Training in understanding how to fill out the MCH Handbook to prevent stunting is very effective.

Abstract

Abstract

The early developmental period in children is a crucial stage marked by rapid growth and development. The number of interconnected neurons can be observed to determine the quality of brain development in a child. Stimulation affects the connections between neurons. This research is an analytical, observational, cross-sectional study that aims to investigate the relationship between stimulation using the Mother and Child Health (MCH) book and the development of children aged 3–5 years at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Preschool and Kindergarten, Surabaya. The sample for this research consists of 104 pairs of mothers and children aged 3–5 years old selected using a purposive sampling method. This research utilized primary data collected through a questionnaire based on the MCH book, completed by the mothers in the sample. A total of 79 children in the good stimulation category exhibit good development, while 21 exhibit deficient development. Meanwhile, four children in the deficient stimulation category show developmental delays. Fisher’s Exact Test shows a significant relationship (p-value = 0.003 < 0.05) with a weak relationship (C = 0.335) between maternal stimulation based on the MCH book and the development of children aged 3-5 years old in Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Preschool and Kindergarten, Surabaya. Therefore, it can be concluded that maternal stimulation, as outlined in the MCH book, has a significant impact on the development of children aged 3–5 years old in Preschool and Kindergarten Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal Surabaya.
