Abstract

Background: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has increased in the last 30 years from 0.04 to 0.50. This condition increase the parents’ awareness and understanding in early diagnosis, education, management and health services for children with ASD. Purpose: This study aims to analyze the relationship between the uses of visual support for clinical improvement of children with ASD. Method: This study is an observational analytic study. The research was conducted at UPTD ABK Sidoarjo from March to June 2018. The research subjects in this study were four to seven years children with ASD condition. The sampling technique was consecutive sampling and was accomplished during the pre-test and post-test design. The measurement tool for using the Indonesian version of childhood autism rating scale (CARS) that has been validated. Management of visual support has been done for 120 minutes in three months (12 times) consisted of six activities, each activity for 20 minutes with one-one technique (one subject with one therapist). Results: There was no relationship improvement of the  CARS based on the pre and post visual support management for three months (12 times) on general impression data, level, and consistency of intellectual responses. The results of paired t-test on the pre and post visual support management for three months (12 times) showed decreasing value of CARS. This result means that social, communication and psychomotor interactions have p<0.01. Conclusion: Management of visual support is associated with clinical improvement in social interaction, communication (non-verbal) and psychomotor (especially gross motoric).

Abstract

Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is one of the most common cutaneous diseases in teenagers, which causes a decrease in self-esteem. Low self-esteem can affect the quality of life in AV patients. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the impact of AV on the quality of life in teenage patients based on their age, education level, and AV severity. Methods: This research used a non-probability purposive sampling technique and an observational analytic method with a cross-sectional design. The research location was SMPN 18 and SMAN 3 Surabaya. This study was conducted from August 2019 until January 2020. The samples were 109 teenagers; the total population was 2,121 teenagers. Research variables are AV severity and AV patients' quality of life. Research instruments were Lehmann’s Grading System for evaluating AV severity and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) in teenage AV patients. Data obtained was analyzed with the fisher-exact test method. Results: There were 46 (42.20%) males and 63 (57.80%) females in this study. DLQI results showed that AV had an enormous impact on quality of life in 12.80% of cases among all subjects. AV has a great potential to precipitate anxiety and affect the quality of life without considering the severity of the disease. Correlation between quality of life and age; quality of life and education level; quality of life and AV severity level resulted in p values of 0.19; 0.08; and 0.59. Conclusion: The management of AV in teenage patients should consist of individual treatment, education about AV, and its impact on the quality of life, as one of the critical social determinants of health.

Abstract

The tendency for autism spectrum disorders or also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is increasing globally, even becoming 1 per 54 in 2016. Until now, the cause of autism is not known for certain, ASD is considered to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. One of the environmental factors in this case is related to nutrition, one of which is vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency is often found among children with ASD. Several studies have shown that vitamin D is involved in various brain bioprocesses including neuromodulation and nerve transmission and brain function while also influencing inflammatory processes, autoimmune disorders, oxidative stress and also neurotransmitters that are widely associated with the possibility of ASD. This review aims to describe vitamin D deficiency may contribute to ASD disorders. Based on this, in the future, it is necessary to consider when treating patients with ASD to consider the need to check the patient's vitamin D levels and if there is a deficiency it can be advised to sunbathe and or be given additional vitamin D intake.

Abstract

Introduction: The increasing prevalence of depression and irregular dietary pattern amongst adolescent, especially women, has become an important issue today. A number of studies confirm that dietary pattern plays a role as one of the biological factors affecting mood regulation through the production of nerotransmitters, however, there are conflicting results regarding the matter in adolescent. This study aimed to examine the correlation between dietary pattern and depression in adolescent. Methods: This study was done through cross sectional analytical observational study in 89 high school students in SMAK St. Louis Surabaya. The data was gathered through two types of questionnaires filled by the respondents. The questionnaires were Food Frequency Questionnaire to assess dietary intake pattern and Beck Depression Inventory to assess the occurence of depression amongst the respondents. Results: The study showed high prevalence of irregular dietary pattern and depression within the sample. From Spearman correlation test, there is no correlation between dietary pattern and the prevalence as well as the degree of depression (p > 0,05). Conclusion: There is no correlation between dietary pattern and depression in adolescent. It may be caused by a lot of other factors contributing to the occurence of depression, including biological, psychological, and social factors.

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive developmental disorder that shows difficulties in communication, social interaction, behavior, interests and activities that are limited and repetitive. The prevalence of ASD also continues to increase worldwide, followed by an increase in the need for early intervention in ASD children. The limited services available make early intervention a challenge in itself. The long Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in limited therapy, because therapy in treatment service facilities cannot be carried out as before. In this case it is important to involve parents as the primary caregivers for ASD children in interventions to anticipate the limited interventions due to a pandemic situation. Parent Training can be done as an effort to provide information, education, and skills to parents so that they can provide intensive, comprehensive, sustainable, and early intervention.
