Abstract

Pemakaian Idiom digunakan dalam berbagai situasi, yakni situasi informal dan formal dalam pidato. Adapun tujuan penelitian ini diantaranya untuk meneliti beberapa tujuan komunikasi pembicara dan maksud tersirat idiom pada ungkapan metafor yang digunakan oleh pembicara dalam berpidato. Selanjutnya, penelitian ini membahas tentang penggunaan ungkapan idiom secara lebih jauh dalam konsep metafor. Konsep tersebut digunakan untuk membahas tentang beberapa tujuan pembicara yang menghubungkan antara sistem pemahaman dan pengalaman pembicara tersebut di dunia nyata. Objek kajian dalam penelitian ini adalah transkrip pilihan dari pidato Obama yang membahas tentang hubungan Amerika dan negara-negara Muslim. Teori konsep metafor diaplikasikan untuk menggambarkan ungkapan-ungkapan yang digunakan oleh Obama, khususnya idiom, yang mengacu pada hubungan negara-negara tersebut. Ungkapan idiom ini menghasilkan maksud tersirat, oleh karena itu peninjauan tindak tutur tak langsung dari teori yang digagas oleh Searle (dalam Yule, 1996) serta pelanggaran maksim yang digagas oleh Grice (dalam Levinson, 1983) dipakai untuk mencapai maksud dan tujuan Obama dalam menyampaikan pidato di negara-negara Muslim tersebut. Selanjutnya, teori pelanggaran maksim diaplikasikan untuk mengetahui beberapa maksud ungkapan idiom Obama. Dengan demikian, kajian konsep metafor (Kövecses, 2002) dan dua teori pendukung tersebut dipakai dalam penelitian ini. Kajian penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menggambarkan dan menafsirkan ungkapan idiom dalam pidato tersebut. Dalam hasil penelitian ini dibuktikan bahwa Obama banyak menggunakan ekspresi idiom dalam berpidato. Ungkapan-ungkapan idiom tidak hanya digunakan untuk memperhalus gaya berpidato Obama, namun juga untuk mengungkapkan secara tidak langsung tujuan-tujuan komunikasi Obama dalam menyampaikan pidato di negara-negara Muslim. Kata Kunci: Idiom, Konsep metafor, Prinsip Koperatif, Pelanggaran maksim, Tindak tutur, Konteks situasi Abstract The use of idioms is applied in any situations, informal and formal situation of the speech. The aims of this research are to examine the speaker’s communicative purposes and implied meanings based on idiom in metaphorical expressions he used in delivering speech. Further, this research discusses more about the use of idiom in metaphorical concept. Such concept is used to treat the speaker’s intentions related to his perceptual system and experience with the real world. The transcripts of selected speech of Obama in addressing between the United States and Muslim countries are used as the objects. The theory of conceptual metaphor is applied to describe Obama’s idiomatic expressions to address the relationship between those countries. Since idioms generate intended meanings, the observations of indirect speech acts proposed by Searle (as cited in Yule, 1996) and maxims violation proposed by Grice (as cited in Levinson, 1983) are required to get the further interpretation. The theory of indirect speech acts is used to achieve the aims of Obama performing speeches in Muslim Countries. Further, violating maxims are treated to explore the implied meanings of Obama’s idiomatic expressions. Thus, the study of conceptual metaphor (Kövecses, 2002) and two supporting theories of speech acts and maxims violation are conducted in this research. This study employs qualitative research to describe and to interpret the idiomatic utterances in Obama’s speeches. The result of this research proved that Obama uses many idiomatic expressions in his speeches. The idiomatic expressions are used not only to refine the rhetorical style in his speeches, but also to imply Obama’s communicative purposes in delivering speech in Muslim Countries. Abstract

This research discusses the implicit opinion about Russian people dissatisfaction upon Putin regime as expressed in article The Civil Archipelago: How Far Can the Resistance to Vladimir Putin Go? This article was published by an American popular mass media, The New Yorker. The main goal of this research is to uncover the hidden opinion that it is unable to emerge an ambiguous interpretation. The implicitness is analysed by using Potts’s (2005) theory of Conventional Implicature. The domains used are Nominal Appositive and Supplementary Relative. In order to see the relationship between the implication and the ideological effect of mass media, a critical discourse analysis is applied as well. Namely by taking the socio-political relationship of Russia and US into account. Abstract

In the study of language, what people do by saying something is called speech acts. Speech acts is not only found in everyday life but also in the film. This research concerns with speech acts produced by the main character in Shrek movie script. The aims of this research are to describe the types of speech acts and to analyze the most dominant speech acts produced by the main character. Besides, the aim of this research is also to know and describe the purposes of Shrek as the main character to use speech acts. The objects of this research are texts in the form of movie script. Austin’s (1962) theory of speech acts is applied in this research as the major theory. The types of research in this study are qualitative and quantitative research. Qualitative research is applied to analyze the data in the form of the text. Quantitative research is used to count the member of speech acts used by Shrek to conclude which types of speech acts is dominantly used. There are 50 utterances to be analyzed. The result of this research shows that the four types of speech acts produced by Shrek are directives, representatives, expressives, and commissives. This study shows that the dominant speech acts used is directives. It reaches 44%. It indicates that Shrek uses directives because he wants to make the hearer do something. Besides, Shrek also wants to be admitted by the people that he is actually a kind ogre. Keywords: directives, Shrek, speech acts, types of speech acts. . ABSTRAK Dalam ilmu bahasa, apa yang dilakukan seseorang melalui ucapannya disebut tindak tutur. Tindak tutur tidak hanya ditemukan di dalam kehidupan sehari-hari tetapi juga di dalam sebuah film. Penelitian ini merujuk pada tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh tokoh utama di dalam naskah film Shrek. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menjabarkan tipe-tipe tindak tutur dan untuk menganalisa tipe tindak tutur yang paling dominan digunakan oleh tokoh utama. Selain itu, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah juga untuk mengetahui dan menjabarkan tujuan Shrek sebagai tokoh utama dalam menggunakan tindak tutur. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah teks dalam bentuk naskah film. Teori tindak tutur oleh Austin (1962) digunakan dalam penelitian ini sebagai teori utama. Tipe penelitian di penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Penelitian kualitatif digunakan untuk menganalisis data dalam bentuk teks. Penelitian kuantitatif digunakan untuk menghitung jumlah tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh Shrek untuk menyimpulkan tindak tutur mana yang paling dominan dipakai. Ada 50 tutur kata yang dianalisis. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat empat tipe tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh Shrek: directives, representatives, expressives, dan commissives. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tindak tutur yang paling dominan digunakan adalah directives. Tipe ini mencapai 44%. Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa Shrek menggunakan directives karena dia ingin membuat pendengarnya melakukan sesuatu. Selain itu, Shrek juga ingin diakui oleh orang-orang bahwa dia sebenarnya adalah raksasa yang baik. Kata kunci: directives, Shrek, tindak tutur, tipe-tipe tindak tutur.

Abstract

This study examines dark jokes and how they are delivered through implications made by a character named The Joker under the scope of Pragmatics in Incongruity Theory by Morreall (1987), and Attardo (1994). This study is also supported by some other theories such as Gricean Maxim by Grice (1989) and Conversational Implicature by Levinson (1983). The study is a descriptive-qualitative research with case study as the strategy. The data are obtained using documentary method by watching the movie The Dark Knight and selecting utterances made by The Joker that contain dark jokes. The findings of the study show that The Joker has many ways of delivering his dark joke as a display of his sociopathic character. The incongruities and the maxims he flouts vary, although there is dominance in ignorance type of incongruity and the flouting of maxim of quality. The reasons why The Joker makes dark jokes are because he enjoys the misfortunes of others and he sees them as entertainment as a sociopath that he is; he wants to shift the threats pointed to him and uses the jokes as the way for him to threaten his enemies back; and because he want to maintain unpredictability of his evil deeds by telling jokes with a dark twist at the end, just before he commits acts of crime. He uses a lot of implicatures to confuse his opponents and to keep them from understanding the way The Joker thinks and acts.

Abstract

This study investigates the existence of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in one of Indonesia English language newspaper The Jakarta Post. This research aims to reveal the existence of this GBV practice in five selected articles under the case of sexual assault happened to Agni, one of UGM students. This research uses qualitative research where there are 131 clauses selected to be analyzed. The analysis uses the Critical Discourse Analysis Fairclough’s model (1989) as a framework, involving Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) (2004), Wood’s gendered media (1994), and mass media discourse. The result shows that gender-based violence practice does exist on those selected articles through the use of linguistic tools applied by the journalists. This indication related to three things. They are a misrepresentation of women, rape narrative, and objectivity, where women are depicted to be submissive and passive in media. The result also finds that patriarchal culture also influences the way of The Jakarta Post in presenting the issue about violence which represents that the media abuses the victim of the issue and provides the existence of gender-based violence that The Jakarta Post presents in their articles. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Systemic Functional Linguistics, media discourse, The Jakarta Post, gender-based violence,

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the power of dominant group which is from different social class and status. The data source is a movie entitled Assassin’s Creed which is downloaded from internet. The theory of Generic Structure is used to identify the elements of the movie and to collect the data. The data are analysed in the form of shots and clauses which is visual and linguistics element. The linguistics data are analysed by using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) by Halliday (2004) the other hand, the visual data are analysed by using Systemic Functional Visual Element by Kress and Van Leeuwen (2006). Therefore, this research is Critical Discourse analysis (CDA) study. The research’s finding is the power that represents by the dominant people which is constructed in Assassin’s Creed.

Abstract

The article investigates the relation of politeness, gender and power in making and responding to request between two person with different social status and rank in Moana movie. Trosborg’s taxonomy of request strategies (1995), Face Threatening Acts (FTAs), and politeness strategies by Brown and Levinson (1987), Fairclough theory of power (1989) are applied to explain the phenomenon of how the act of making and responding to requests influence the possible politeness strategies, the construction of gender by language choices and their power. The study indicates that Moana, a daughter of the chief village, succeeds in reaching her goal of her mission to request Maui to restore the ‘heart’ of Te Fiti and further restore and heal the nature. Moana’s success, despite Maui’s rank and status as a powerful male demigod, is the result of her communication of using request strategy, which also demonstrate her powerful position. The finding of this study reveals that both characters’ ways on making and responding request are related to and determine their gender and power.

Abstract

UMKM Tooku Tooku merupakan produsen minuman susu kedelai dengan misi untuk meningkatkan nilai minuman tradisional menjadi minuman kekinian yang lebih sehat. Dengan mempertimbangkan persaingan bisnis yang semakin kompetitif, perlu adanya inovasi baru dan dukungan usaha dalam penerapan manajemen dan strategi bisnis yang tepat. Program Pengabdian Kemitraan (PPK) ini bertujuan untuk mendampingi UMKM Tooku Tooku sebagai mitra dalam pengembangan manajemen bisnis di bidang sumber daya manusia, keuangan, operasi/produksi, pemasaran khususnya pada branding produk. Metode yang digunakan adalah participatory rural/urban appraisal yang melibatkan pemilik dan karyawan secara aktif yang didampingi oleh 4 orang dosen 2 orang mahasiswa. Kegiatan ini terdiri dari survei awal, sosialisasi program, pelatihan, dan konsultasi intensif melalui Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Hasil dari PPK ini adalah peningkatan hardskill dan softskill mitra sebesar 85%, serta peningkatan nilai ekonomis sebesar 60%. UMKM Tooku Tooku menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan dalam hal distribusi produk melalui penambahan reseller serta pemanfaatan media sosial (Instagram dan TikTok) untuk memperluas jangkauan pasar dan menguatkan branding produk. Dari segi produksi, mitra mampu menambah variasi produk dan mencinptakan poduk inovatif Boba Soymilk serta memperbaiki kemasan yang berdampak pada peningkatan penjualan. Skor kepuasan mitra mencapai 95%, yang menunjukkan keberhasilan PPK dalam membantu mitra mengatasi permasalahan bisnis mereka.
