Abstract

Abstract.Communicative language teachingmerupakan salah satu metode pengajaran cukup efektif bila dilaksanakan secarasesuai. Karakteristik dan prinsipnya seperti kesesuaian penggunaan bahasatarget (bahasa Inggris), focus kepada pesan/ message, proses psikolinguistik,dan praketk bebas seperti halnya keahlian komunikasi, keahlian bahasa, dankompetensi interaksi sosialisasi diulas untuk mengukur kualitas metode dankemungkinan penggunaannya. Lebih jauh, keuntungan dan kelemahan metode inipundievaluasi sebagai sebuah parameter untuk meminimalkan resiko penggunaan metodeini. Untuk mengatasi kelemahan-kelemahan metode ini, beberapa strategialternative dari  Tarone, Faerch, danNijmagen (Cook, 1993) diulas sebagai bahan pertimbangan. Keywords: communicative languageteaching, communicative competence, language competence, social interactioncompetence, language appropriateness, message focus, psycholinguistic process,free practice.

Abstract

Abstrak. Artikel iniditulis untuk meninjau ulang dan menilai tiga materi pengajaran bahasa, yaitutiga buku ‘Reading’ yang diterbitkan 1 hingga 3 dekade lalu. Review terhadapmateri-materi ‘Reading’ ini menggunakan kerangka kerja dan kriteria yangdiajukan oleh Tomlinson (2003), Saraceni (2003), dan Masuhara (2003). MateriReading ini adalah materi untuk level pre-intermediate. Untuk melihat kualitasbuku-buku ini dalam memenuhi tujuan pedagogi, satu unit digunakan sebagaicontoh dan  dianalisa agar pengajar dapatmenilai dan menyeleksi apakah buku-buku ini mampu memenuhi syarat dan prinsipbuku bahan ajar ideal bagi siswa pembelajar bahasa kedua, terutama materiotentik ‘Reading,’ dan apakah masih layak digunakan dalam proses belajarmengajar siswa aktif saat ini. Evaluasi yang diterapkan didasarkan padakerangka kerja pengembangan materi dan universal criteria serta contentspecific criteria dari materi-materi dimaksud. Kata-kata kunci: pedagogic purpose, universal criteria,content specific criteria, authentic material, student centred learning model.

Abstract

Abstract. Tulisan inimembahas satu dari sekian banyak isu TEFL (Teaching English as a ForeignLanguage) yaitu isu tentang faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan sulitnya pemahamanteks dari bacaan berbahasa asing (L2). Diperkirakan ada 2 penyebab sulitnyapemahaman teks dari bacaan L2 tersebut, yakni faktor bahasa dan faktor sosialbudaya. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan phenomenology dan grounded theoryuntuk melihat dan membuktikan bahwa 2 faktor tersebut menyebabkan sulitnyapemahaman teks L2 bagi pembelajar L2. Untuk membuktikan faktor penyebabpertama, yaitu faktor bahasa, penelitian dilakukan dengan mengamati kurangnyapengetahuan pembelajar terhadap grammar L2 dan perbendaharaan kata L2. Sementara itu, schema theory digunakan untukmelihat faktor penyebab kedua, yakni faktor sosial budaya. Hasil penelitianmenunjukkan bahwa sulitnya pemahaman teks L2 ternyata tidak hanya disebabkankarena kurangnya pengetahuan bahasa, akan tetapi latar belakang pengetahuansosial dan budaya L2 dari pembelajar L2 juga menentukan mudah tidaknyapemahamannya terhadap teks L2.  Kata-kata kunci: text difficulty, background knowledge,content schemata, formal schemata, cultural schemata

Abstract

This article deals with the investigation of the existence of postcolonial discourse in Coogler’s Black Panther (2018). The study aims to reveal and examine the existence of social issues related to Bhabha’s notion of postcolonialism represented through visual and linguistic elements in the movie. Fairclough’s (1989,2001, 2010) Critical Discourse Analysis, Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Reading Images, Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics (2004) and Bhabha’s (1994) Postcolonialism are used to conduct this research. The result of the study shows that postcolonial discourse is proved represented in the movie. The findings imply that the post colonialism affects the characters in term of how they see and reflect themselves towards the dominance. They are also identified as possessing hybrid identity, ambivalence, and mimicry. It seems that the result of the research opposes the director’s intention to bring the theme of the movie. Theoretically, it is proved that the social irregularities representing black supremacy and exploitation of the citizen of Africa, Wakanda, is depicted in the movie. Empirically, the existence of nondemocratic social practices in black citizens is also seen in the movie.

Abstract

This study examines dark jokes and how they are delivered through implications made by a character named The Joker under the scope of Pragmatics in Incongruity Theory by Morreall (1987), and Attardo (1994). This study is also supported by some other theories such as Gricean Maxim by Grice (1989) and Conversational Implicature by Levinson (1983). The study is a descriptive-qualitative research with case study as the strategy. The data are obtained using documentary method by watching the movie The Dark Knight and selecting utterances made by The Joker that contain dark jokes. The findings of the study show that The Joker has many ways of delivering his dark joke as a display of his sociopathic character. The incongruities and the maxims he flouts vary, although there is dominance in ignorance type of incongruity and the flouting of maxim of quality. The reasons why The Joker makes dark jokes are because he enjoys the misfortunes of others and he sees them as entertainment as a sociopath that he is; he wants to shift the threats pointed to him and uses the jokes as the way for him to threaten his enemies back; and because he want to maintain unpredictability of his evil deeds by telling jokes with a dark twist at the end, just before he commits acts of crime. He uses a lot of implicatures to confuse his opponents and to keep them from understanding the way The Joker thinks and acts.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of the use of good and correct Indonesian in any context including in electronic media. The purpose of this study is to analyze some of the errors and language errors spoken by participants of Master Chef Indonesia 2020. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods by describing the data obtained in the form of sentences used by Indonesian Master Chef participants. The data source in this study was the participants of the Indonesian Master Chef 2020. The data collection technique was carried out with literature study techniques, namely by (1) watching the Indonesian Master Chef 2020 show again, (2) writing errors in the Master Chef Indonesia 2020 show, (3 ) classifying language errors in Master Chef participants in phonology, morphology, and syntax. The content analysis technique is used to describe the language errors of the participants of the Indonesian Master Chef. Based on the data found, there are several language errors that have been classified, namely language errors (interference) and language errors in the field of linguistics (phonology, morphology, and syntax).

Abstract

This research examines the English-Spanish languange code switching performed by the main characters in the series One Day At A Time using Holmes’ theory. The study analyzes four primary factors driving the use of code switching by the main characters in the series: identity, social, topic, and function. Qualitative research was conducted by collecting and analyzing data from the subtitles of Netflix’s One Day At A Time season 1, 4 episodes. 25 dialogues containing code switching were carefully selected and analyzed to uncover the factors behind the code switching performed by the main characters. Among the four factors, the results of the research reveal that function factors are the most function used, which appearing in 22 dialogues. Followed by social factors in the second place with 13 dialogues. Identity factors ranked third, present in 12 dialogues, and topic factors appear in only 1 dialogue. In conclusion, this study unveils how the main characters employ code switching to navigate their bilingual environment based on the aspects of four factors. This discussion enriches the readers’ understanding of code switching within a multicultural framework.
