Abstract

The advancement of technology by the emergence of various websites and applications in learning English is inevitably becoming phenomena today. However, many educators especially in-service teachers in Asian secondary schools are reluctant to embody them in the process of English Language Teaching (ELT) since this problem has existed in last decade in the English speaking countries which place English as first and second language; one emerging factor might likely be the status of either x-generations or millennial generation attached to some of them in coin with digital native or digital immigrant as proposed by Marc Prensky. Therefore, this paper is supposed to explain an investigation on the view shown by both sides (pre-service and in-service English teacher). In doing so, a qualitative approach is conducted by involving five pre-service teachers and five in-service teachers in South Kalimantan. The expected finding of this research could depict the variety of chosen views towards the insight and knowledge of ELT resources whether it can be useful for the process of pedagogy in the learning process as well as their classroom instruction.

Abstract

The success of teaching needs to consider what strategy should be used to identify an effective way for students to absorb the material. These could be the main priority in the teaching process done by teachers involving teaching English to review their failure in the past, which tend to emphasize the role of a teacher in teaching and learning process what so-called teacher-centered. In the next phase to provide alternative solution, there is a contextual teaching and learning as an approach which adopts various strategies and makes students have an opportunity to be more explorative and thoughtful to learn in class as well as put them as the actor in learning milieus as it is called as student-centered helps teacher to reflect the teaching process whilst connecting academic material to the learners’ context in their daily lives in terms of personal and social contexts for promoting learning motivation. This was descriptive research that described to which extent of the implementation of contextual teaching and learning in the teaching and learning English in SMAN 1 Banjarmasin. There was one English teacher to be observed as a subject of research and involving 63 students in the process of English teaching in the classroom of the second and third grade of SMAN 1 Banjarmasin. To get the data, the researcher used observation and interview. The research found that the teacher employed several principles of contextual teaching and learning involving constructivism, questioning, inquiry, learning community, and authentic assessment in the classroom activities conducted by the observed teacher. Keywords: Contextual Teaching and Learning, Teaching Approach, Reflective Teaching

Abstract

The ethnomathematics of the wetland environment was an interesting discussion to be explored by mathematics teachers in South Kalimantan as learning materials that support the independent curriculum. Mainly if these teaching materials can be used electronically to support distance learning so that students were motivated to learn mathematics; however, the MGMP mathematics teacher in Pelaihari District, Tanah Laut Regency, South Kalimantan, has not yet developed teaching materials using ethnomathematics by development research procedures. The leading cause was that there was no assistance and time available. So the PkM Team held activities to (1) increase the knowledge of local wisdom of mathematics teachers; (2) ethnomathematics-based electronic teaching materials on wetlands; (3) Copyright for the best Teaching Materials. The PkM was carried out online through two methods, namely synchronously, which was carried out in room zoom on July 18, 2022, attended by 23 junior high school mathematics teachers who were members of the Tanah Laut Regency MGMP, and asynchronously via email and WhatsApp group held from July 19 to. September 16, 2022. Further offline PkM activities took place at UPTD SMPN 2 Pelaihari on September 17, 2022. The teaching materials produced met the criteria of validity and practicality. Specifically for the effective standards, participants were directed to carry out each independently as a basis for classroom action research. Participants, during the activity, became more sensitive to exploring local wisdom. The implication of PkM activities was copyright.Pendampingan Pembuatan Bahan Ajar Berbasis Etnomatematika Lingkungan Lahan Basah untuk Meningkatkan Wawasan Kearifan Lokal Guru Matematika

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a difference in students' vocabulary mastery when taught using video and picture. The researcher in this study utilized a variety of videos instead of just focusing on one type, which differentiates it from the previous study. The goal of this study is to compare the students’ learning outcomes who were taught using video and using picture. SMP Negeri 14 Banjarbaru is where this study was conducted. In this study, a quantitative approach and a quasi-experimental design were applied. VIII C was designated as the experimental group, whereas VIII D was designated as the control group. The results of this study revealed that the experimental class's pre-test mean score was 71,1 and their post-test score was 82,6. Meanwhile, the pre-test mean score for students in the control group was 65,1 and the mean post-test score was 65,7. The researcher calculated the data using SPSS 26.0 and discovered that the Mann- Whitney U Test had an Asymptotic.Significance (2-tailed) is 0.04, indicating that it was lesser than 0.05. Therefore, it can be stated that there is a difference between students' vocabulary mastery taught using video and using picture, and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. As a result, it is possible to assume that the use of video as a teaching and learning media at SMP Negeri 14 Banjarbaru gave more effect in terms of students' vocabulary mastery than picture. The researcher advises English teachers to utilize videos into their lesson plans and to combine two or three different types of media to make their lessons more engaging and enjoyable for the students. As for future researchers, the researcher suggested conducting research in the same topic using more advanced and modern audio-visual media and visual media.

Abstract

Abstract Vocabulary acquisition is a fundamental aspect of language learning, and the search for effective strategies to facilitate vocabulary development is ongoing. This study explores the potential of video games as tools for vocabulary acquisition in language learners, considering the impact of individual differences. The systematic literature review methodology is employed to analyze previous studies on the topic. The review highlights the advantages of video games, such as their motivational qualities, cooperative learning environments, and real-world contexts that enhance students' communicative skills. Video games provide a safe virtual environment for learners to experiment, receive immediate feedback, and be rewarded, fostering effective vocabulary learning. The review also reveals that context-embedded approaches, motivation, word frequency, game design, and instructional strategies are significant factors influencing vocabulary acquisition through video games. Additionally, learners' individual differences, including age, gaming experience, and language proficiency, affect the effectiveness of video game-based vocabulary learning. These findings underscore the importance of considering instructional design and learner characteristics when incorporating video games into language education. By integrating video games into vocabulary learning, language classrooms can offer engaging and effective instruction that promotes vocabulary acquisition.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Real-life observation has shown that second language (L2) learners differ in their L2 learning process in which this individual difference is virtually related to the factors influencing second language acquisition. Many researchers have been interested in finding those factors, yet there is still a little study examining the impact of language ego as the affective factor. Thus, this paper aims to elaborate on how the language ego influences second language acquisition. By having a thorough understanding of language ego in L2 learning, it is expected that it can give some enlightenment to a better learning process for L2 learners. To provide an adequate explanation of language ego, this paper uses a literature review. This method is used to aggregate empirical findings related to a narrow research question which is the language ego as one of the affective factors influencing second language acquisition. Some previous studies that discuss a similar topic are collected, and the data is analyzed in accordance with the objective of this paper. As one of the affective factors, language ego is a psychological state of a learner in which it refers to the identity that a person develops in reference to the language. In this paper, it is hypothesized that the language ego influences second language acquisition in positive correlation when the focus is the permeability of the language ego. The permeability shows how the ego can be flexible and adaptable to the second language. The higher the learner’s language ego permeability is, the higher the learner’s chance of successful second language acquisition is.
