Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze how the abusive and discriminatory behavior portrayed in the movie towards persons with disabilities, as well as the effects of abusive behavior and discrimination. This study used a descriptive-qualitative method, with the primary source being the original video of The Greatest Showman and secondary data coming from books, articles, and journals on the internet. Data collection was carried out by watching films and understanding the movie’s dialogue several times, as well as making observations to deepen issues that are relevant to the main issues being studied, namely abusive behavior and discrimination against persons with disabilities. These results strengthen the analysis using Keashly's theory that two types of abusive behavior were found: physical violence and verbal violence. For discrimination using the theory from the U.S. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission found several types of discrimination, namely disability discrimination, harassment discrimination, and race/skin color discrimination. The effects of harassment and discrimination are anxiety, violent behavior, psychological problems, marginalization, disempowerment, low self-esteem, and negative behavior.

Abstract

Pengabdian Masyarakat merupakan salah satu Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi yang wajib dilaksanakan oleh civitas akademik. Adapun kegiatan Pengabdian Masyarakat pada semester Genap 2023 ini dilaksanakan di Yayasan Panti Asuhan Ar-Ridho, Depok, Jl. Caringin No.13, Rangkapan Jaya, Kec. Pancoran Mas, Kota Depok, Jawa Barat 16435. Materi yang akan disampaikan mengenai Pelatihan Creative Writing Skill dalam Bahasa Inggris. Hal ini dikarenakan pentingnya keterampilan Menulis dalam bahasa Inggris bagi pengurus yang berada dalam Yayasan Panti Asuhan Ar-Ridho. Oleh karenanya, panitia pelaksanaan Pengabdian Masyarakat akan memberikan pelatihan Bahasa Inggris khususnya bagaimana menulis kreatif  dalam Bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari pelatihan ketrampilan ini adalah sebagai bekal bagi para pengurus di Yayasan Ar-Ridho agar dapat meningkatkan kualitas dirinya dan dapat menerapkannya dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, ataupun sebagai bekal nantinya dalam mencari pekerjaan. Metode pelaksanaan  kegiatan  ini  dengan  cara  para  narasumber  memberikan  materi  dan  diskusi serta  memberikan  waktu  kepada  para  peserta  untuk  sesi  tanya  jawab  terkait  kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat tentang pelatihan. Lalu diberikan soal pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur tingkat keberhasilan pelatihan. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah terdapat kenaikan yang cukup signifikan sebanyak 15 orang peserta atau sebanyak 75% peserta mengalami peningkatan indeks kemajuan berdasarkan hasil post-test yang diberikan. Hal ini mengindikasikan efektifnya pelatihan yang diberikan kepada para pengurus yayasan Ar-Ridho. Kata Kunci: Pelatihan; Menulis Kreatif; Kemampuan Menulis

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan penggunaan metode Synchronous (Zoom) dan Asynchronous (Google Classroom) dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Desain penelitian ini adalah metode survei. Data hasil belajar diperoleh melalui angket sebagai instrumen untuk mengumpulkan data. Sampel sebanyak 235 peserta yang diambil dari 15 kelas di MA Negeri 1 Serang, Banten. Berdasarkan analisis data, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan zoom kurang efektif. Ada beberapa kendala terkait hal ini. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan sebanyak 46,8% siswa mengalami gangguan sinyal internet, menguras kuota internet sebesar 55,4%. Sebaliknya, siswa beranggapan bahwa belajar bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan google classroom lebih efektif dan nyaman, hasil survei siswa menunjukkan; 1) sebanyak 36,6% peserta menyatakan pembelajaran dengan menggunakan media google classroom mudah dan efektif, 2) google classroom tidak menguras kuota internet sebesar 25,2%, 3) google classroom tidak terhambat gangguan sinyal internet 21 ,5%. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran daring dengan menggunakan google classroom (asinkron) lebih efektif menurut survei yang telah dilakukan dibandingkan dengan zoom video conference (sinkron).

Abstract

The objective of this study is to see the effect of grammar and vocabulary mastery on writing in English. The research method used is a survey method with analysis and regression techniques with the assistance of the SPSS 20 program. The research sample examined 47 students from 3 high schools, namely students of class XI at SMK Daarul Hikmah, SMK Miftahul Falah and SMK Daruttaibin which are located at Serang Regency. The data set collection is accumulated by presenting a grammar mastery questionnaire by carrying out a written English proficiency test. From the analysis, result shows: 1) There is a significant effect of mastery of grammar and vocabulary together on the English writing skills of students at SMK in Serang Regency. It is indicated by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and FH = 49,615. Along with mastery of grammar and vocabulary contributed 69.3% to the variables written in English. 2) There is a significant effect of language mastery on the English writing skills of students at SMK in Serang Regency. It is proven by the acquisition of the Sig. 0.001 <0.05 and th = 3.616. The grammar mastery variable contributed 12.39% in improving English writing skills. 3) There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery on the English writing skills of SMK students in Serang Regency. The acquisition of the Sig. 0,000 <0.05 and th = 6,093 is shown in the data. Vocabulary mastery variable contributed 35.28% in improving written skills in English.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze gender dysphoria and trauma in Ben de Backer, who is the main character of Mason Deaver's novel entitled I Wish You All the Best. This novel tells the ups and downs in the life of Ben de Backer a non-binary who is still underage. The object of this study is to analyze the symptoms of gender dysphoria and trauma in a non-binary student, in this case, Ben de Backer, and provide an overview of mental issues as well as gender and sexuality for readers. In theory, the researcher wishes to develop theoretical knowledge of literature related to gender and mental health. Practically, this research is useful as a reference for readers who will carry out similar research, especially in terms of gender dysphoria and trauma in other literary works. This research is included in the type of literary criticism because the writer interprets and analyzes a literary work, especially a novel. The data in this study were taken directly through quotations from the novel, as well as from various other sources. The results of this study showed that gender dysphoria and trauma exist and have real impacts on human beings. Abstract

The research aims to determine how teaching media and vocabulary mastery affects students'speaking skills at SMAN Kabupaten Cirebon. The population of this research was all students atSMA Negeri in Kabupaten Cirebon, speaking skills as part of English. The sample of thisresearch is taken based on the multiple-stage method with similar characteristics andprobability. In this research, the writer randomly takes the ten great students at SMA Negeri inKabupaten Cirebon into the sample; one experiment group and one control group. In thisresearch, there are two kinds of instruments: one is to measure the student's speaking skill, andthe other is to determine the student's learning styles. Data analysis used SPSS version 20, with asignificant level of = 0.05. The requirement analysis uses a normality test, homogeneity test, andtwo-way ANOVA. There is a significant interaction effect of teaching media and vocabularymastery on students' speaking skills. The value of Fo = 5.225 proves that, and Sig = 0.025<0.05. There is a significant effect of teaching media on students' speaking skills. That is provedby Fo = 13.822 and sig = 0.000 < 0.05. There is a significant effect of vocabulary mastery onstudents' speaking skills. That is proved by Fo = 36.140 and Sig. 0.000 > 0.05.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the use of metaphor and contextual meaning in selected songs from Charlie Puth’s album Nine Track Mind. The study draws upon figurative language theory and contextual semantics as the main analytical frameworks. The objective is to find metaphor within the songs, contextual meaning from the songs, and the overall message of the album. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study focuses on five songs: “One Call Away,” “Dangerously,” “Marvin Gaye,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” and “See You Again.” A total of 28 metaphorical expressions were identified, each reflecting emotions such as longing, heartbreak, desire, and personal growth. Contextual meaning was also analyzed to uncover how social, emotional, and cultural backgrounds shape lyric interpretation. The findings show that metaphors in Puth’s lyrics effectively convey emotional depth and connect with listeners’ experiences. Contextual elements add further meaning, enriching the interpretation of the songs. The album as a whole communicates themes of vulnerability, emotional struggle, and modern relationship dynamics. This study concludes that metaphor and context together create multi-layered meanings in song lyrics and offer valuable insights into semantic expression through music.
