Abstract

Japanese language learners at Universitas Andalas face significant challenges in achieving oral proficiency, particularly spontaneous speaking fluency and confidence. To address this, the present study investigates the implementation of the ippunkan supīchi (one-minute speech) method in Japanese kaiwa (conversation) courses. This quantitative and qualitative study utilized a questionnaire to evaluate student perceptions across ten key indicators of speaking competence, administered to 34 Japanese literature students who practiced weekly one-minute speeches for seven consecutive weeks. Results demonstrated unanimous improvement in confidence and spontaneous speaking ability (100%), with 85.3%–94.1% of participants reporting enhanced vocabulary retention, grammatical accuracy, reduced speaking anxiety, and faster response times. The findings substantiate the method's efficacy in fostering cognitive processing efficiency (e.g., lexical retrieval) and affective outcomes (e.g., self-efficacy) in L2 Japanese speakers. This study contributes empirical evidence for task-based language teaching approaches that combine time constraints with repetitive practice to optimize speaking proficiency.

Abstract

Mastering vocabulary is crucial to learning foreign languages, which is also true for Japanese. One of the many ways to acquire Japanese vocabulary is through various media, such as manga. Manga is rich in onomatopoeias, a valuable tool for enhancing one's grasp of Japanese vocabulary. Onomatopoeias are imitations of sounds that help convey a particular state or condition, allowing the reader or listener to imagine and even "hear" the sound effect vividly. In his work, Ono (2007) defines onomatopoeia as words outside human speech tools, words that originate from human speech tools but cannot be parsed, and words that describe situations without a voice or audibility. This study explores how manga can bolster Japanese language skills, particularly in mastering onomatopoeia as a category of Japanese vocabulary. Employing qualitative methods, the study centred on the language phenomena found in manga. Data was gathered by systematically reading manga and identifying onomatopoeias, which were then analysed to comprehend their role in enriching Japanese vocabulary acquisition. The findings underscore how manga can enhance Japanese vocabulary, mainly through its use of onomatopoeia, with accompanying images making comprehension more accessible.

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of nationalism in the translation of literary titles published in Djawa Baroe, an Indonesian-language magazine circulated during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945. It focuses on the translation strategies and ideological meanings conveyed through lexical choices and symbolic narratives. The analysis identifies twenty-six translated titles, examining three representative examples in detail to illustrate how linguistic adaptation intersects with nationalist discourse. Employing Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation model, the study distinguishes between direct and oblique strategies to explain how titles were modified to fit Indonesian conventions while resonating with nationalist sentiments. Additionally, Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) situates these strategies within broader ideological and socio-political contexts, allowing the research to capture micro-level textual operations and reveal how translation acted as discourse production embedded within wartime power structures. Findings demonstrate that translators utilized deliberate techniques such as modulation, equivalence, and orthographic adjustment to enhance readability and embed ideological content, foregrounding themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and devotion to the motherland. This highlights that translation in Djawa Baroe was far from a neutral linguistic transfer; instead, it emerged as a politically charged act of cultural mediation. By illustrating how Japanese occupation propaganda intersected with Indonesian nationalist discourse through translation, this study contributes to translation studies by underscoring the ideological role of translation as an instrument of power, identity, and cultural hegemony.

Abstract

Construction projects often face challenges in the form of delays and cost overruns due to discrepancies between plans and actual implementation. The Dormitory Building at Airlangga University Campus C in Surabaya was selected as a case study to comprehensively evaluate project performance. The purpose of this study is to evaluate time and cost performance using the Earned Value Management (EVM) method to provide an accurate picture of the deviations that occur and as a basis for project control recommendations. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach with secondary data in the form of weekly progress reports, basic schedules, and project financial records. The analysis was conducted through the calculation of EVM indicators, which included Planned Value (PV), Earned Value (EV), Actual Cost (AC), Cost Performance Index (CPI), Schedule Performance Index (SPI), and Estimate at Completion (EAC). The results show that the project experienced delays with an average Schedule Performance Index (SPI) value of 0.92, or approximately 8% behind schedule, while the average Cost Performance Index (CPI) value of 1.05 indicates cost efficiency of 5% compared to the initial budget. The Estimated Cost at Completion (EAC) projects a completion cost of IDR 94.8 billion, which is lower than the contract value of IDR 95.6 billion. Therefore, the project is still under control in terms of cost but requires accelerated work to meet deadlines, while the application of EVM has proven to be effective as an early warning tool and a basis for decision-making in construction project management.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the integration of offline digital technology and local wisdom in developing the speaking skills of early childhood learners at TK ABA 2 Ova, Palu. The research focuses on how simple digital media combined with elements of local culture, such as folklore and traditional games, contribute to the improvement of children’s verbal abilities. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews with teachers and parents, and documentation of children’s learning activities. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing, following the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman. The findings reveal that the application of offline digital media incorporating local stories and traditional games has a positive impact on children’s language development. It enhances vocabulary mastery, sentence structure, fluency, confidence, and semantic accuracy in speech. Children exposed to culturally based digital media demonstrated higher levels of verbal participation and idea expression, while traditional games fostered natural spontaneity and interactive communication. The main supporting factors included teacher facilitation and collaboration between school and family, whereas the primary challenge was the limited availability of digital facilities. Overall, the integration of simple digital technology and local wisdom proved effective in enriching children’s linguistic experiences while strengthening cultural values within the language learning process.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the use of metaphorical language in the poems of the Rokkasen in Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, with a focus on identifying image-based classifications and conceptual meanings. Metaphor is understood as a cognitive mechanism that connects two domains sharing similar characteristics, thereby creating meanings that extend beyond literal expression. A descriptive qualitative approach is employed in this study. In this research, selected poems by the Rokkasen are analyzed. The data were collected through the Uninvolved Conversation Observation technique supported by systematic note-taking. The analysis applies the Referential Identity Method, and the findings are presented using both formal and informal descriptive techniques. The theoretical framework draws on Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory to explain metaphorical meaning and Ullman’s Image Classification Theory to categorize metaphorical imagery. The results reveal three main types of metaphorical imagery—Anthropomorphic Character, Abstract-to-Concrete Image, and Animal Character—as well as two types of conceptual metaphor: Structural and Ontological. These metaphors reflect central themes commonly found in classical Japanese poetry, particularly love, life, and religion.
