Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (i) kebutuhan siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar dalam membaca teks bahasa Inggris, dan (ii) untuk mengetahui apakah bahan bacaan pelengkap yang dikembangkan layak untuk siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar atau tidak. Desain penelitian ini adalah Research and Development. Subjek penelitian adalah 27 siswa kelas V sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini menggunakan berbagai instrumen pengumpulan data seperti angket analisis kebutuhan siswa, angket penilaian guru dan ahli. Data tersebut digunakan untuk mengembangkan dan mengevaluasi tiga unit bahan bacaan tambahan. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa bahan bacaan bahasa Inggris yang dikembangkan dalam penelitian ini dapat mencakup kebutuhan siswa dalam membaca dan dianggap sesuai untuk siswa kelas lima sekolah dasar. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan hasil skor rata-rata dari kedua angket adalah 4.31. Penemuan dari proses  penelitian ini  dapat  digunakan oleh siswa dan guru dalam proses belajar mengajar.The objectives of this research were to find out (i) the fifth grade students of elementary school needs’ in reading English text, and (ii) to find out whether the developed supplementary reading materials are appropriate for EFL young learners of the fifth grade or not. The research used Research and Development design. The subjects were 27 students of the fifth grade of elementary school. This research used various instruments such as need analysis questionnaire, teacher judgment and expert judgment questionnaire. The data were used to develop and evaluate the three units of supplementary reading material. It was found that English reading materials developed in this research are coped all of the students’ needs and are considered appropriate for the EFL young learners of the fifth grade. It was proven by the result of questionnaire in which the mean score was 4.31. The finding of this research process can facilitate the students and the teacher in teaching learning activity.Keywords: reading, supplementary material, young children, efl learner

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan untuk mencari tahu (1) ada atau tidaknya peningkatan secara signifikan dalam pencapaian berbicara siswa dengan menggunakan permainan hidden object sebagai sebuah medium dalam mengajarkan monolog deskripsi, dan (2) respon siswa dalam implementasi permainan hidden object. Subjek penelitian ini adalah 36 siswa kelas sepuluh SMA. Pola penelitian ini adalah one group pretest-posttest design. Paired samples t-test digunakan untuk menguji nilai siswa. Hasil uji menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan signifikan secara statistik oleh permainan hidden object terhadap pencapaian berbicara siswa dengan tingkat signikan (0.000.05). Para siswa juga memberikan respon positif terhadap implementasi permainan hidden object. Berdasarkan hal ini, dapat dikatakan bahwa permainan hidden object mempermudah siswa untuk meningkatkan pencapaian berbicara.The research was conducted to find out (1) whether the hidden object game as a medium in teaching descriptive speaking has a significance effect to increase speaking achievement, and (2) how the students responses to the implementation of the hidden object game. The subjects were 36 students of first grade students of senior high school. The research design was one group pretest-posttest design. Paired samples t-test was used to test the students scores. The result showed that there was a statistically significant effect of the hidden object game on the students speaking achievement with significant level (0.000.05). The students also gave positive responses of the implementation of the hidden object game. This suggests that the hidden object game facilitates the students to improve their speaking achievement.Keywords: Hidden object game, descriptive speaking, students response.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada i) peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian berbicara siswa setelah penerapan media video, ii) respon siswa terhadap pembelajaran menggunakan video. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat kedua SMA. Pre-tes dan pos-tes dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam pencapaian berbicara siswa setelah penerapan media video dangan tingkat signifikan 0.00. Ini menunjukan bahwa media video dapat membantu siswa menigkatkan pencapaian berbicara mereka. Mayoritas siswa juga memberikan respon yang positif terhadap pembelajaran berbicara melalui video.  This research was aimed at finding out whether there i) was statistically significant improvement of students’ speaking achievement after the implementation of media of video,ii) the students’ responses on learning speaking through video. This research was quantitative research. The subjects of this research were 30 students of the second year of SMA. Speaking tests in the forms of the pre-test and the post-test were employed to collect the data. The results showed that there was statistically significant improvement of the students’ speaking achievement after the implementation of video with the significant level 0.00. This indicates that media of video help students improve their speaking achievement.The majority of students also showed that they gave positive responses on the process of teaching speaking through video. Keywords: improving, speaking, video.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis masalah yang dihadapi siswa ketika belajar mendengarkan dengan diskusi kelompok dan aspek keterampian mendengarkan yang lebih baik dari keterampilan yang lain. Penelitian kualitatif ini dilakukan di kelas VIII F. Peneliti memeroleh data melalui kuesioner, pre-test dan post-test. Data dianalisa dengan cara menginterpretasi, menghitung nilai rata-rata dan membandingkan nilai siswa antara keterampilan macro dan micro di pre-test dan post-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat lima masalah utama yang dihadapi siswa yaitu, mengobrol saat berdiskusi, teman yang tidak berkontribusi, teman yang mendominasi, teman kelompok, tidak ingin menjadi ketua kelompok. Kesimpulannya, masalah dalam diskusi disebabkan oleh kondisi diskusi yang tidak mendukung dan keahlian makro bisa tampil lebih baik karena adanya schemata di proses top-down.The aims of this research were to analyse the problems faced by the students when studying listening in group discussion and to analyse which particular aspect of listening skill performed better than the other skill. This qualitative research used class VIII F. The researcher gained the data from questionnaire, pre-test and post-test. The data were analysed by interpreting, calculating the average, and comparing of students’ answer both macro and micro-skills in pre-test and post-test. The results showed that there were five major problems faced by students they were: chatting another topic while discussing, not-contributing member, dominant friend, group-mate, willingness to be a leader of discussion. In listening skills, the students performed better in macro-skills than in micro-skills. In conclusion, problems in discussion can be caused by the imperfect condition of discussion and macro-skills can perform better because of the existence of schemata in the top-down process.Keywords. group discussion, listening, macro and micro-skills

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui kesalahan siswa dalam menulis teks recount dan menentukan tipe kesalahan berdasarkan taksonomi kategori linguistik, taksonomi siasat permukaan, dan taksonomi efek komunikatif dan (2) menginvestigasi alasan siswa membuat kesalahan.  Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah 31 siswa kelas X4 SMAN 1 Pesisir Tengah tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif. Instrumen dari penelitian ini adalah tugas menulis dan wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan taksonomi kategori linguistik, kebanyakan siswa membuat kesalahan siktaksis. Berdasarkan taksonomi siasat permukaan, kesalahan terbanyak yaitu pada kesalahan penghilangan. Berdasarkan taksonomi efek komunikatif, siswa banyak membuat kesalahan lokal. Kesalahan yang dibuat siswa terjadi karena kurangnya pengetahuan siswa terhadap tata bahasa Inggris dan pengaruh dari bahasa pertama mereka.This research was intended to (1) find out the student’s errors in writing recount text and determining the types of error based on linguistics category taxonomy, surface strategy taxonomy, and communicative effect taxonomy and (2) investigate the students’ reason for making the errors. The subjects of this research were 31 students of class X4 at SMAN 1 Pesisir Tengah of 2013/2014 academic year. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The instruments of this research were a writing task and interview. The result showed that based on linguistics category taxonomy, mostly students made syntactic errors. Based on surface strategy taxonomy, mostly students made omission error. Based on communicative effect taxonomy, mostly students made local errors. The errors made by the students happened because of the students’ lack of knowledge of English grammar and also the influence of their first language.Keywords: recount text, students’ error, writing

Abstract

 This present study was aimed to find out whether there was any significant difference in vocabulary learning strategy preferences between males and females and to investigate whether there was a significant correlation between students’ vocabulary learning strategies and their vocabulary size. The population was the first grade students of SMAN 1 Natar. There were 100 students as the sample. The instruments were the questionnaire and vocabulary size test by Schmitt and Clapham (2000). The result of the Independent Sample T-Test calculation showed that p 0.05. It means H1 was accepted, that there was a significant difference in vocabulary learning strategies preferences between males and females students. Keywords: gender, vocabulary learning strategies, vocabulary size

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) menginvestigasi apakah ada perbedaan pemahaman siswa yang diajar menggunakan teks literary dan non-literary melalui pendekatan membaca critis. (2) menemukan teks manakah yang paling effektif untuk memahami bacaan. Untuk mencapai tujuan ini, peneliti menggunakan studi kuantitatif. Dua kelas dijadikan sampel, yaitu kelas experimen satu menggunakan teks literary dan kelas experimen dua menggunakan teks non-literary. Terdapat dua instrument, yaitu tes reading dan interview. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan tingkat pemahaman siswa yang diajar menggunakan teks literary dan non-literary melalui pendekatan membaca kritis. kemudian, teks literary lebih effektif dari non-literary untuk memahami bacaan. Hasil tes hipotesis menunjukan bahwa T-hitung lebih tinggi dari T-tabel (4.402 2.002). Jadi disimpulkan bahwa H0 ditolak dan menunjukan bahwa teks literary lebih baik dari non-literary untuk meningkatkan membaca kritis siswa.This study aimed at (1) investigating whether there is a significant difference between the students reading comprehension achievement using literary text and non-literary text through critical reading approach. (2) finding which of the two materials that is more effective in reading comprehension. To achieve this goal, the researcher carried out quantitative study. Two classes have been taken: experimental class one using literary text and experimental class two using non-literary text. There were two instruments used in this research: reading test and interview. The results of data analysis showed there was a significant difference of between the students reading achievement taught by literary text and those taught by non-literary text through critical reading approach. Then, literary text was more effective than non-literary text. Hypothesis test showed that T-value was higher than T-table (4.402 2,002). It can be concluded null-hypothesis is rejected. It can be inferred that literary text is better than non-literary text for encouraging students critical reading.Keywords: critical reading approach, literary text, non-literary text, reading comprehension.

Abstract

Tujuan  dari  penelitian  ini  adalah  untuk  mengetahui  apakah  terdapat peningkatan  signifikan  dari  kemampuan  berbicara  siswa  setelah  pembelajaran melalui teknik bermain peran. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 2 SMA  Negeri  1  Tanjung-bintang.  Desain  pre-test  dan  post-test  satu  kelompok digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Nilai rata-rata dari pre-test adalah 57.13 dan post-test  adalah  82.46.  Skor  siswa  meningkat  dengan  signifikan  karena  p0.05 (p=0.000). Berdasarkan  data,  ini  dapat  disimpulkan  bahwa  terdapat  perbedaan signifikan  dari  pencapaian  siswa  dalam kemampuan  berbicara  sebelum  dan sesudah pembelajaran melalui teknik bermain peran.   The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant improvement  of  the  students' speaking  ability  after  being  taught  through  Role Play.  The  population  of  this  research  was  the  Second  year  students  of  SMA Negeri 1 Tanjung-bintang. One group pre-test and post-test design was used. The mean score of pre-test was 57.13 and post-test was 82.46. It  proved  that  the  students' scores  increase significantly  because  p0.05  (p=0.000).  Based  on  the  data,  it  can  be  concluded that there is a significant difference of students‟ achievement in speaking ability before and after being taught through Role Play technique. Keywords: improving, role play, speaking

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the compatibility of English Textbook with the scientific approach principles of 2013 curriculum and criteria of good English textbook. This research was focused on speaking activities in the textbook for senior high school. This research uses qualitative research by using document analysis. The results show that (1) the compatibility of the scientific approach 2013 Curriculum fulfilled 90 point of the qualifications of the existing criteria (2) and the assessment for good English textbook by the expert, fulfilled 85 point compatibility with the existing criteria. Based on the analysis, it was found that the speaking activities of the textbook is adequate for teacher to use this textbook. It means that the speaking activities of the textbook fulfill the criteria based on the scientific approach of 2013 Curriculum and also fulfill the criteria of good English textbook by the expert opinion.Key words:  Speaking, Analysis, Compatible, Textbook, 2013 Curriculum. doi: https://dx.doi.org/10.23960/UJET.v10.i2.202113

Abstract

The objectives of the research are to find out whether there is significant difference of students’ speaking performance after they got treatment by using Language Board Game and Pair Dialogue, to find out aspects of speaking improve the most in both classes, and to find out the students’ response about Language Board Game. An experimental group was used in the research. The result showed that there was significant difference between students who were taught through Language Board Game and Pair Dialogue. The gain in the experimental class was 15.1334, while the control class was 10.9375. Besides that both techniques also affected the aspects of speaking especially in term of fluency aspects. The result of students’ response showed that 97.84 % give the positive response toward Language Board Game. It could be concluded that the Language Board Game was effective to improve students speaking performance.Keywords: Language board game, pair dialogue, speaking performance.
