Abstract

Since 2016, Public Park in Indonesia, particularly in West Java has significantly been revitalized. Taman Sempur is one of public parks located in West Java that spent about Rp 2.2 billion for its revitalization process. That massive amount was poured out in order to develop public space for the community. Taman Sempur is a compound where Taman Kaulinan, Taman Skateboard, Taman Ekspresi, big pedestrian and few sports facilities with its own specific functions stand. This research, that applied the combination of geo-semiotic and ethnographic analysis, attempted to observe how meaningful Taman Sempur as urban public space for the community through public space and public sphere approaches. The existing modality indicates that the community have certain attention to participate in Taman Sempur as public space, with some of its flaws in material dimension aspect. At the same time, public sphere nuances still vaguely felt, considering the community’s awareness were not full and even due to habitus individual conflict while becoming part of the “public”.Keywords: Taman Sempur, Urban Public Space, Public Sphere, Geo-Semiotic

Abstract

Abstract

This study shows how detik.com, a pioneer and one of the largest online media companies in Indonesia frames the Covid-19 pandemic crisis. From the 6713 news reports in January, February and March, the most dominant framing of the crisis that appeared in the coverage was attribution of responsibility, followed by frame of human interest, frame of morality, frame of conflict and the last is frame of economic consequences. The quantitative approach was used in this research to ensure that systematic analysis and non-arbitrary procedures can be carried out on large amounts of data. This study offered a better understanding on of how online media framed the crisis during the pandemic. The results of this study indicate that the frame of attribution of responsibility is not only the most widely used by detik.com, but also the most dominant when the government is the main source of the news. The form of attribution of responsibility in times of crisis tends to be stronger in the realm of government because crisis events are widespread, forming an experience felt at the national level. As a result, crisis events have the potential to become political symbols used in framing various debates regarding a policy in the long run. The average tone of news towards the government from January to March was positive, although it gradually became more negative.

Abstract

Until now hegemonic gender dichotomyin Indonesia has worked in various spheres of human life, in various social roles, even in the smallest unitof social organizations: family. The dichotomy was caused by the ideology of "State Ibuism" which was disciplined during the New Order era between 1965 and 1998, where women would play the role of mothers as a subject of private work, serving various domestic needs of the family, while men play the right role conversely. Discipline works through various media formalized through the Marriage Act 1974, which explains the role of men and women in a married relationshipand Panca Dharma Wanita principles, which lays the foundation of theideal women. These ideals remained entrenched even after the New Order regime’s fall. Kecap ABC advertisements attempt to counter the hegemony over gender dichotomy and patriarchal division of work roles. This article uses Kress and Van Leeuwen’s multimodal discourse analysis to show how an attempt to counter ideologies wasmadeto be remediated through the modalities contained in these advertisements. This research elaborates on how these advertisements represent women as superior in terms of dealing with exploitation that occurs in a family, and shows how the renegotiation of domestic work is possible. This research also elaborates how the male body as a mediator of masculinity is actively mediated through modalities such as speech, gestures and moving images, by showing how men can also do domestic work.

Abstract

. Convergence is a deep integration of knowledge, tools, and all relevant areas of human activities. As an inevitable condition, convergence has also changed a lot of aspects of mass media at the international, national, and local levels. This study elaborates how the local radios in Cirebon, namely Sindangkasih FM, Suara Gratia FM, and Cirebon Radio, are adapting to the convergence culture. This study seeks to demonstrate how the convergence culture can affect private broadcast media, which are not in the epicentrum of media in Indonesia. This study indicates that these three private radios in Cirebon have tried to adapt to the convergence culture in minimally three aspects, namely structural, information coverage, and news presentation or storytelling convergence. The structural convergence happened at the organizational structure of the radio, in which more direct and fluid coordination in the newsgathering and writing processes is applied. At the news coverage level, reporters and scriptwriters are responsible for managing news content for old radio broadcasts and new online media as well. At the news presentation level, the news is not only broadcasted but also reported on new online channels, such as websites and social media. These convergences have further created a more convergent newsroom, including integrating journalism workflows, applying multiskilled journalism and resource sharing, using various technological tools, creating interactivity with the audience, and expanding the audience reach. Keywords: journalism, convergence, broadcasting, interactivity, radio

Abstract

No systematic review and/or meta-analysis has attempted to map the macro and comprehensive landscape conditions, developments, and trends of communication research in Indonesia in the past few decades. Therefore, it is challenging to measure the progress that Indonesian communication scholars have achieved. This study analyzed 3108 articles distributed in reputable communication scientific publications in Indonesia, spanning two decades: January 2001 to March 2020. This study found many optimistic or skeptical justifications of Indonesian communication scholars about the development of communication epistemology in Indonesia. During the two decades, although there had been an increase in publications relying on quantitative approaches, it can be seen that the dominance of qualitative approaches was irreplaceable. The trend of increasing research using a quantitative approach was only a conversion from literature review articles widely published in the early 2000s. The Ministry of Communication and Information, Indonesia, in the second position, as the institution that contributes to the most authors of scientific articles after the Universitas Islam Bandung in the first place, and even surpassing Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Padjadjaran dan Universitas Diponegoro showing that the agency of state institutions is one of the active actors in communication knowledge production and reproduction in Indonesia. The increasing number of citations over the past two decades indicates that Indonesian scholars are experiencing enrichment of reference sources and interconnection with other scholars. However, based on keyword trends, Indonesian research’s deliberative and progressive vision has yet to appear dominant.

Abstract
