Abstract

The implementation of religious freedom in Islam still has unresolved issues. Based on the perspective of the Madinah Charter, Islam can provide protection of freedom of religion and give the rights of non-Muslims. Nowadays, however, in practice, in some Islamic countries, there is actually a variety of aberrations that obscures the meaning and spirit of the Madinah Charter. In some Muslim countries, the formalization and formulation of syariah are still implemented in the publicsphere. State does not remain neutral toward all religious doctrines and always strives to apply the principles of syariah as a policy or state legislation. This is also reflected in the Cairo Declaration that gives legitimacy to Muslim countries to maintain and run a syariah-based doctrine that emphasizes the protection of religion rather than the protection of the fundamental rights of freedom of religion. Therefore, the need for the doctrine of separation of religion and state is intended to make state more independent and is expected to provide protection of the organs and institutions of the state against the abuse of power in the name of religion. Right to freedom of religion can only be realized within the framework of the constitutional and democratic state based on the spirit of universal human rights.Key words: right to freedom of religion, state protection, universal human rights

This research aims to show one of the main characters’ hierarchies of needs in The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, which arises when Natasha, an undocumented immigrant who is about to be deported, tries to fulfill some of her needs before and after her deportation. In this research, the researchers used the hierarchy of needs theory by Abraham Maslow. The data of this research is collected by reading and marking some texts from the novel. Based on the analysis, the researchers find that Natasha can fulfill all of her needs, before and after the deportation, based on the five stages of the hierarchy of needs by Abraham Maslow. So, the result is even though she has to try hard in meeting her safety needs because, as an undocumented immigrant who is about to be deported, she feels worried to move back to Jamaica, and there are also some obstacles, but Natasha is still able to fulfill those needs when she arrived and started her new life in Jamaica, and finally she can reach her self-actualization. Based on Natasha’s motivation in meeting her needs, the researchers conclude that the most dominant needs that Natasha tries to fulfill are safety and love and belonging needs.

Abstract

Abstract

The difficulty of translating idiomatic expressions arises when there is no direct equivalent between the source and target languages. In order to discover how translators deal with those issues, this study aims to identify types of idiomatic expressions and examine the accuracy of Soul film subtitle with the inspection of strategies used by the translator. This study used a qualitative descriptive method by applying the classification of idioms based on McCarthy and O’dell’s theory, the strategy in translating idioms by Mona Baker, and the translation accuracy level by Nababan. The data was gathered by watching the film, reading the subtitles, and noting the idiomatic expressions present in the film. This study took 14 samples to be analyzed from the 98 data found in the source text. From all data, there are 8 types of idioms which are verb + object, prepositional phrases, compound, simile/simili, binomial, whole clause/sentence, cliché/fixed statements, and euphemisms. The translator used 5 strategies in translating the idioms which are using an idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, translation by omitting the play of the idiom, and translation by omitting the entire idiom. As for the accuracy, this study found 94 data of accurate translation, 2 translations of almost accurate, and 2 translations not accurate. However, it can be concluded that the translation has a high-level accuracy making the quality of the translated idioms in the subtitle is good, although it can be still improved. Abstract

In academic field, argument is an essential factor of understanding statements. In this regard, the present paper aims to analyse National University Debate Contest (NUDC) 2016 using Toulmin model argumentative structure and its relation with the implied meaning from National University Debate Contest. This paper employs descriptive qualitative analysis to examine the logical pattern of arguments through linguistic expressions that occurred in the debate. The data were taken from NUDC in Mercu Buana University focusing on (part 1) the statement of the government proponent (Bina Nusantara University) and the opposite speaker (Brawijaya University). The data were analysed using the Toulmin model of logical argument. The findings showed that the government opposite speaker very often made the rebuttal claim by showing the weaknesses from the government side; while the government proponent speaker has claimed almost in every pattern of argument proposed by Toulmin model. The paper concludes that both speakers’ patterns of argument have utilized Toulmin model such as claims, data, qualifiers, rebutting conditions, and warrants. Even though there are so many grammatical mistake and unwell-organized structure, but the logical structure can be analysed using Toulmin model.
