Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted all sectors of life, including the economy. One of the the sectors most negatively affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia is textile and apparel industry. This study investigates Indonesian textile and apparel export volumes, exchange rate of rupiah to us dollar and covid-19 as a dummy variable on the export performance of textile and apparel industry. This study used data from Statistics Indonesia, the World Trade Organization and the Federal Reserve Bank for January 2019 to December 2020 and analyzed by using time series forecasting with multiple linear regression. The export performance of textiles and apparel is proxied by total export of Indonesian textiles and apparel. The result of this study indicates that performance of Indonesian textile and apparel exports during the covid-19 outbreak in Indonesia decreased by 11.04% compared to normal conditions. Instead of being affected by the pandemic in the country, the pandemic that occurred in export destination countries could also reduce the value of Indonesia's textile and apparel exports, with the highest declines occurring in the USA (23.85%). Government can start by reducing the requirements for export destinations to America to recover the value of textile and apparel exports. In addition, the government can also reduce the burden on textile and apparel companies during the pandemic.

Abstract

Income inequality is an obstacle for Indonesia to try to escapethe middle income trap. Income inequality in the country shows an upward trend, due to low labor productivity, rising unemployment, and inflation. This study aims to examines the effectof labor productivity, unemployment, inflation, and government spending on health and education in districts/cities of East Java province from 2018 to 2023. The results of theoretical testing using the Sys-GMM analysis model explain that labor productivityshows a relationship with the same direction, as well as significant to the Gini index variable, as a measure of income inequality. The number of low-educated workers and dominated by informal sector workers is a strong reason for this phenomenon. The formation of the regional inflation control team proved to be very effective. This can be seen from the absence of a significant effect of inflation on income inequality. The unemployment rate and income inequality shows a relationship with the same direction and significant. Local government efforts through education spending have a significant effect on income inequality, but the positive relationship between the two indicates that education spending targeting primary and secondary non-vocational education takes a long time to affect income inequality. Health spending has a significant effect on lowering income inequality. Regional health insurance programs and worker health monitoring are quite effective in improving the quality of health of the whole society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of household expenditure, cigarette prices, and food and beverage prices on household cigarette consumption in six provinces in Java using data from the 2021 National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS). The results of this study are expected to help the authorities in formulating policies related to cigarette consumption, which has been a topic of debate. Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) is an econometric method used to analyze consumer behavior and estimate the elasticity of demand with respect to variations of price and expenditure. The AIDS model has a good ability to predict consumer response to changes in price and expenditure. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was chosen as the estimation method used to produce parameters for the effect of own price, cross-price, and consumer expenditure on the portion of household expenditure on cigarette consumption. As a comparison, this study used food and beverage commodities for cross-price measurement. The results showed that cigarette prices, food and beverage commodity prices, and food and beverage expenditure had a significant effect on the portion of household expenditure on cigarette consumption. Measurement of price elasticity shows that the portion of cigarette expenditure is inelastic to changes in cigarette prices. Cross price elasticity indicates that cigarettes are complementary goods with other food and beverage commodities. As for expenditure elasticity, cigarettes can be categorized as normal goods. Cigarette’s price inelasticity indicates that the objective of an excise tax increase to reduce consumption is ineffective. Other than raising taxes, there are other ways to reduce cigarette consumption that should be taken into account. Revenues from cigarette excise and taxes can be allocated to support the provision of better health services. Local government should search for alternative sources of income apart from the tobacco industry

Abstract

Container Terminals in Tanjung Perak Port is a trading center in the Eastern Indonesia Region (KTI) with a total throughput of 3.6 million TEUs in 2020. The utility/level of use of terminal facilities, consisting of the pier/berth occupancy ratio (BOR), has reached 60%. The field/yard occupancy ratio (YOR) is 65%, while the maximum utility is 70% (UNCTAD). It is necessary to explore the technical efficiency of each container terminal using the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) because it can also capture the inefficiency effects. This study is built from the analysis of production factors in the period of 2009-2020, where the variables used are capital (k) using company asset data, labor variable (l) using data on the number of human resources, energy variable (e) using energy cost data (fuel oil/fuel, electricity, and water). The inefficiency variables are port draught (d) and loading and unloading productivity (p). The container terminal in Tanjung Perak has a relatively high technical efficiency value of 0.94. This shows that the terminal operation is quite optimum and is approaching the maximum point. The overall average elasticity is 2.01, which can be categorized as an increasing return to scale. The elasticity of assets has the most significant proportion, so it can be concluded that the port is capital intensive. Next, it's found that the higher productivity 1% increase in loading and unloading productivity, the more inefficiency with a relatively minimal value of 0.11%. Finally, an increase of 1% in depth will increase efficiency by 10.89%.

Abstract

Corruption is a phenomenon not easy to observe. Corruption theory and existing definitions are ambivalent, both in size and level. Mathematical models, and econometrics are prone to statistical errors. Fuzzy logic facilitates more humane modeling and analysis. Fuzzy logic is not bound by strong assumptions, as a solution to solve complex problems, and not precise, including corruption analysis. The main objective of this study is to measure corruption in Indonesia. The research method used fuzzy logic by specifying the Mamdani fuzzy inference system (FIS) model. FIS Mamdani was chosen because it is more human manner. Sources of secondary data used in this research from various institutions. The results show that corruption time series data can be produced. During the research year (1995-2020), corruption that occurred in Indonesia was 36.14 percent of real GDP per capita.

Abstract

Income inequality is a crucial issue in economic development in Indonesia, given its significant impact on social and economic stability. This study analyzes the effects of unemployment, labor productivity, poverty, and economic growth on income inequality in regencies/cities in East Java Province from 2018 to 2024, using the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). The analysis results show that unemployment and poverty variables do not have a statistically significant effect on income inequality. Conversely, labor productivity was found to have a negative and significant effect, indicating that increased productivity tends to reduce income inequality. Meanwhile, economic growth has a positive and significant effect, indicating that economic growth actually increases income inequality. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that increasing labor productivity is a key factor in efforts to reduce income inequality. Furthermore, the results regarding the positive effect of economic growth indicate problems in the distribution of the benefits of economic growth, where economic growth is not enjoyed equally by all levels of society.
