Abstract

Despite the rapid development of the Islamic financial sector in Indonesia, the development of Islamic pension funds is way behind those of the other Islamic financial sectors. This study aims to explore the opportunities and challenges faced by Indonesian Islamic pension funds. Utilizing a qualitative research method, the study conducted Focus Group Discussions with 23 large pension funds spread across five big cities in Indonesia. It was revealed that opportunities and prospects for developing Islamic pension funds in Indonesia are relatively good. However, various internal and external challenges were found, such as a lack of knowledge; the weak commitment of founders; lack of quality human resources; relatively unfavorable tax treatment; limited investment instruments; competition with government pension schemes; and public literacy problems.  Therefore, two broad strategies are recommended to develop the Islamic funds, namely the provision of direct/indirect incentives to market players, and literacy programmes to targeted/priority groups. These strategies are expected to encourage and accelerate the growth of Indonesia's Islamic pension fund industry in the future.JEL Classification: H55, H75, J32How to Cite:Kasri, R. A., Haidlir, B. Abstract

This study evaluates the determinants and impacts of trust toward awqf institutions. We extend previous studies by examining the determining role of religiosity and knowledge on trust towards awqf institutions, in addition to the role of reputation and integrity. Our study differs from the previous studies as we incorporate the intergenerational analysis of 658 experienced and inexperienced Indonesian waqf donors by employing the PLS-SEM method. Our findings suggest that religiosity and knowledge significantly influence trust toward awqf institutions. However, the impact differs across generations X, Y, and Z. While the direct impacts of religiosity and knowledge on the intention to do cash waqf are insignificant for certain generations, the variables significantly impact the intention of all generations when moderated by the trust. Therefore, our primary implication is for awqf institutions to know their customers better and offer more trust-enhancing programs for the inexperienced younger generations.JEL Classification: Z12, L31How to Cite:Haidlir, B. Abstract

In the context of Southeast Asia, Muslim-majority nations Indonesia and Malaysia had pioneered the development of halal tourism. Nevertheless, Malaysia has outperformed Indonesia in cultivating its halal tourism industry. The research sought to investigate the political economy factors contributing to this discrepancy. The research posited that the emergence of Islamic identity, the intensification of Islam’s politicization, and the varying degrees of capitalizing on Islamic values are three crucial determinants influencing the relative success of Malaysia’s halal tourism industry compared to Indonesia’s. Firstly, the perception of Islamic identity in Malaysia is less threatening compared to that in Indonesia. Secondly, the politicization of Islam is less pronounced in Malaysia than in Indonesia. To examine these assertions, the research utilized a methodological blend of primary and secondary data, incorporating interviews with policymakers and stakeholders of halal tourism in both countries. In addition to identifying the critical factors shaping the development of halal tourism, the research contributed by offering several recommendations concerning the innovative aspect of halal tourism branding. It was argued that within the growth of halal tourism in a nation, debates surrounding the emergence of Islamic identity in aspects of halal tourism can potentially obstruct the advancement of cultural tourism commodities. Consequently, the research enhances our understanding of the complex interplay between political economy factors and the evolution of halal tourism from an academic perspective.

Abstract

Since the ebactment of Law No. 38 of 1999, zakat management institutions (Lembaga Amil Zakat/LAZ) have evolved beyond their traditional role as religious fund distributors to become faith-based human service organizations that are increasingly adaptive to social challenges and demands for professionalism. This study aims to analyze the organizational transformation undertaken by three corporate-affiliated zakat institutions YBM BRILiaN, BSI Maslahat, and YBM PLN through the lens of the political-economy perspective by Wamsley and Zald (1973) and the internal-external factor framework of Kettner (2002). The findings reveal that the organizational transformations in these institutions are responses to external pressures such as parent company policies, government regulations, public expectations, and the rapid shift toward digitalization. Internally, these changes are driven by improvements in human resource capacity, organizational restructuring, and cultural renewal. Although the three institutions share similar religious foundations and social missions, their transformation strategies differ: YBM BRILiaN focuses on organizational efficiency and strengthening community-based programs, BSI Maslahat moves toward zakat institutionalization through a social holding model, while YBM PLN demonstrates the most comprehensive transformation by integrating digital innovation, volunteer empowerment, and decentralized decision-making. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the transformation of faith-based zakat organizations in the context of modernity and corporate alignment.
