Abstract

One among many considerations that should be taken into consideration when moving a conventional face-to-face course to a web-based course is learners' needs, which are transformed into a research-informed blueprint. This study addressed the process of blueprint design resulting from the needs analysis process of design-based research. The objective is to describe the designe   d blueprint set for a web-based English Writing course for nursing students in Indonesia. The blueprint consists of designs of learning approach, performance goals, learning tasks and feedback, instructional strategies, and web design modules and interface. The descriptive statistics were used to test 37 items scored by experts of ESP and Writing about the blueprint. The results of Expert Judgments showed that all items obtained mean at the ‘Good’ categories. It means that the blueprint can be used in conducting the next stage, which is website development.

Abstract

This study aims at discovering the effect of You Tube video project to improve students' achievement in speaking skill including pronunciation, grammatical accuracy, vocabulary, fluency, and interactive communication. It used an experimental design involving 83 Nursing students in Bantul: 44 students of Control group and 39 students of Experimental Group using simple random sampling technique. This study used statistical t-test to discover the effect of using You Tube video project in improving the students' speaking skill, particularly in English for Nursing based on the score of pretest and posttest of both groups. The t test results labeled equal variances in which t-value was 3.077, the degree of freedom (df=81), and t-table was at 1.989. The difference was significant because t-test result was higher than t table. It indicated that the achievement in the students' speaking skill through You Tube video project was improved.

Abstract

This study aims at gathering information about necessities, lacks, and wants of the students on ICT-based English for Nursing Students materials as a part of needs analysis with a descriptive qualitative method. The subject was the students of Nursing Department. The data were obtained from primary sources including a questionnaire (both closed-ended and open-ended questionnaire) and secondary sources including an observation. The results of this study showed that (1) students' necessities on ICT-based English for Nursing Students materials were for communication purposes in daily life both written and spoken; (2) the lacks of ICT knowledge were the abilities to operate the media and technology applications in the learning process; of language skill were a communication skill and an understanding for the language used on website or application, (3) students’ wants on ICT based English for Nursing Students materials were proper internet facilities in campus, supporting teaching and learning facilities,  Web and online-based learning activities, and online-based assessments and grades. All shows that students are welcome to the use of ICT-based learning materials in the classroom at a moderate level.

Abstract

Listening is crucial to understand spoken language and to support the other language skills mastery; however, some students find several problems related to listening. This study aims to determine students’ listening problems and listening strategies they apply to overcome the difficulties. The research type is qualitative research using questionnaires and interviews as research instruments. This research used descriptive statistics to analyze the data obtained from the questionnaires and an interpretation of coding to analyze the interview transcript data. The respondents were 31 pharmacy students involved in the English for Pharmacy class, and there were three of them engaged in a structured interview session. The findings of this study were: (1) the students were moderate-level in listening problems of perception (M=2.91), parsing (M=3.18), and utilization (M=2.95) phase, (2) the students were high-level strategy users in cognitive, meta-cognitive, and socio-affective strategy, (3) the students mostly experienced difficulty in the parsing phase compared to two other problems and applied cognitive and meta-cognitive strategies than socio-affective strategy.

Abstract

This research aims to determine students’ engagement levels and factors in attending ESP online courses during the Covid-19 pandemic. In performing data and data analysis, a qualitative research design was employed with the interpretation of descriptive statistics. This research distributed a questionnaire to 59 students in the nursing department. The research findings showed that four dimensions of students’ engagements got a means score in the level of "Agree"; skills engagement with 4.18, participation/interaction engagement with 3.99, emotional engagement with 3.88, and performance engagement with 3.86. For factors influencing students' engagement, all factors consisting of direct and indirect factors got a means score of "Strongly Agree" as 4.38. The findings showed that the students were engaged in an ESP online course. Both direct and indirect factors influence students’ engagement including learning resources, teaching competency, knowledge base, learning style, teaching context, social network, and technology.

Abstract

The English learning assistance community service aims to give knowledge of the use of basic English and vocabulary mastery, word order, and sentence order correctly. This training activity involved the students. Mentors in this activity were English lecturers who have good English skills and mastery. The implementation of the mentoring activities took place at Oemah Ngaji Arjosari, Turi, Sleman, Yogyakarta. This training was held to improve students' English language skills. The results of the activity showed that the students were very enthusiastic to participate in the learning activity which could be seen from their activeness and presence during the mentoring. From this training activity, it is expected that the students' English skills will improve.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pengajaran bahasa Inggris bagi siswa taman kanak-kanak terkait dengan materi menjaga kebersihan lingkungan. Pengabdian masyarakat ini sebagai sarana pembelajaran anak-anak agar dapat belajar bahasa Inggris yang dapat digunakan sehari-hari dengan cara menyenangkan. Pengajar merupakan dosen bahasa Inggris yang mengajarkan kosa kata dan ekspresi sederhana terkait menjaga kebersihan lingkungan. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa taman kanak-kanak sangat antusias dan aktif dalam mengikuti kegiatan. Dari kegiatan ini, diharapkan bahwa keahlian berbahasa Inggris siswa akan meningkat.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and explore non-English teachers' perspectives on their students' ESP needs. This study is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The participants in this study were 16 public health lecturers at STIKes Surya Global Yogyakarta. A semi-structured questionnaire was distributed to participants to gather information related to their needs. The study analyzes the data from closed questions using simple statistics and from open questions using interpretations. The results showed that the importance of learning English is to support students’ academic fields and their communication skills. Reading is a basic skill that needs to be mastered. The students found it difficult to write English journal abstracts, practice oral communication, read, comprehend, and review academic sources in English. Teachers sometimes use English in the form of resources including books written in English and international journals and websites. Students need to learn English during their study period and after graduation. The topics needed to learn to support students’ backgrounds were health technology, health business service management, web causation of disease, health insurance, abstract, environmental health, health information system, safety, health promotion, epidemiology triangle, iceberg phenomenon of disease, research design epidemiology, epidemic, and infectious diseases, wastewater treatment, hygiene, and sanitation.Keywords: Students’ needs, ESP, public health students

Abstract

This aims to design a syllabus for "Vocabulary English for Nursing" book for occupational purposes with a specific focus on enhancing vocabulary acquisition, speaking proficiency, and pronunciation skills. This study utilizes ADDIE primarily focusing on the Analysis and Design stages. The syllabus results in ten units, each unit was designed to foster dialogue practices, simple expressions, and vocabulary enrichment. The learning competencies integrated into this syllabus align with the Independent User B1 of CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. The outcome of this study includes a designed syllabus for "Vocabulary English for Nursing" book and the organization of the book. Future research will cover the further stages.

Abstract

Penurunan fungsi organ atau degenerative sel mengakibatkan terjadinya komplikasi yang dialami oleh lansia. Beberapa penyakit yang diderita lansia mayoritas yaitu hipertensi dan hal tersebut memicu terjadinya stress yang dialami oleh lansia. Apabbila stress tersebut tidak segera teratasi maka akan menimbulkan berbagai penyakit penyertas seperti stroke, gagal ginjal hingga penurunan kesadaran. Hal tersebut perlu dilakukan upaya pencegahan yaitu dengan menggunakan terapi non farmakologi yaitu dengan mendengarkan terapi murottal Al -Quran yang mampu meningkatkan hormone endorphin menjadikan daya rileksasi. Laporan pengabdian design yang digunakan yatu studi kasus bertujuan membuktikan terapi murottal dalam menurunkan tingkat stress lansia hipertensi. Analisa data yaitu metode pengamatan. Hasil pengabdian dilakukan dapat membuktikan mendengarkan terapi murottal Al -Quran mengalami perubahan yaitu sebelum mendengarkan murottal sebanyak 23 orang mengalami stress berat dan setelah mendengarkan murottal sebanyak 14 orang mengalami stress ringan.
