Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to describe the students' ability to use expressions. This research was conducted at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Rasyid Tanjung Siantar from January to February 2021. It is descriptive research and uses total sampling technique in selecting the samples. There are 24 students to be the sample in this research. The data were collected by using a test. The researcher got the result that more than 50 % of the students could use expressions with a total mean score of 72 in the the good category. The total mean score is taken from 5 indicators, that were students' ability In using greeting expression with mean score 80.83 in the good category, leave taking expression with mean score 70.83 in the good category, thank you/ gratitude expression with mean score 75 in the good category, apology expression with mean score 64.16 in the good category, and the students' ability in using self-introduction expression with mean score 69.16 in the poor category. The researcher concluded that the students' ability to use expressions was good, a total score of 72. It means they have a good understanding of expressions, mainly greeting expressions.

Abstract

Speaking skill is one of the skills that students need to have. However, there are several factors that make students not master speaking, that was students feel ashamed to express opinions, afraid to make mistakes. One of them in students of MTsN 3 Indragiri Hilir. This problem is the background of the problem in this research. To find out the effect of describing and drawing techniques, researchers used experimental research with pre-experimental designs. The data collection technique in this research was a test using the oral test as an instrument. The sample of this research was 25 students of VII MTsN 3 Indragiri Hilir. After getting the data using the oral test, the researcher found that describe and drawing technique given an effect on students’ speaking skills, the score of the post-test (76.44) was better than the pre-test (66,32), and indicated by some factors, students more active, enjoy, brave. And with the result, t-observed was 22.0 while the t-table was 2.06 to 5. % and 2.81 for 1%. The t-observed score was higher than the t-table. Based on the result, H0 (null hypothesis) is rejected and H1 (alternative hypothesis) is accepted. It also means that describe and draw technique was given effect on students' speaking skills at grade VII of MTsN 3 Indragiri Hilir in academic years 2020/2021.

Abstract

This study aims to find the students' self-regulated learning in English of second grade at SMAN Islam Terpadu Syech Walid Thaib Shaleh Indragiri Teluk Sungka. This type of research is descriptive quantitative. To find the purpose of this study, the researcher used the method of collecting data through a questionnaire. After gathering the data, the researcher found that the results of this study of self-regulated learning showed that regulated learning with 35 students as respondents with an average score of 141.1 was included in the "good category". In addition, the factors that influence students' self-regulated learning are included in the "disagree category" could be seen from the third statement with an average value of 86. From these results, it can be concluded that the second grade students at SMAN Islam Terpadu Syech Walid Thaib Shaleh Indragiri Teluk Sungka have paid attention to their self-regulated learning in English.

Abstract

Speaking is a skill to produce sequences of words that exist at the meaning while reading means a skill to get meaning from the written words. Vocabulary is the key in which these two skills relate to each other. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between speaking skill and reading comprehension of the third semester English students at Islamic University of Indargiri. The sample of this study was 20 students. The research method used in this study was a correlational study. Researchers gave the test of speaking skills and reading comprehension to collect data. After the data has been collected, it was found that the average of the students’ speaking skills was categorized as Good because 70,8 in range 66-79 and the students’ reading comprehension was categorized as Good to Excellentbecause 78,7 in range 76-100. Based on those findings, researchers analyzed the students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension by using Pearson r formula, with the result is 0,691. Based on the coefficient correlation, 0,691 was interpreted as Moderate Correlation. It means there is a significant correlation between students’ speaking skill and their reading comprehension.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety was the main problem in this research. Students found it was difficult in pronouncing or spelling the words and they were afraid of making mistakes in speaking English. This research was aimed to find out the level of students' English speaking anxiety in learning narrative text through online learning. This research was conducted at MAN 1 Indragiri Hilir, Tembilahan. The particiants of this research were the students at grade XI IPA 2 MAN 1 Indragiri Hilir which consists of 34 students. Sampling was done by using purposive sampling technique. This research used a quantitative descriptive method and distributed questionnaires to collect the data. Based on the result of the research, there were 7 indicators of speaking anxiety. They were being blank, forgetting the words they have read, unable to say what they know, less interested in the learning process, silent, afraid of miscommunication, and avoid talking. Based on this analysis, it was concluded that the result of this research indicated that "forgetting the words they have read” was the dominant indicator of students anxiety with category very anxious (80%). The result was 70,43% in the anxious category.

Abstract

Nowadays English is a compulsary subject must be taught for students, because English is global language. English has some skills namely listening, speaking, reading and writing. One of the important skills is reading, because through reading students will have broad insight, so the habit of reading has to start with students in Elementary. Elementary students are English young learners that should be facilitated well in their learning reading by using good strategy. Teaching English for young learner is different with teaching English for adult learner. Young learners have different characteristics and learning preference. In teaching reading, English teachers should implement appropriate strategies and interesting to young learners which can be a stimulus to become active students and participate in teaching and learning process. Therefore, this article aimed to explain some reading strategies that can be applied by the teachers for young learners. The method employed is library research which has four steps to collecting the data namely note-taking, outlining, describing, and draw conclusion. The strategies that are described are Emergent Literacy, Mnemonic Strategy, Read aloud strategy, Decoding Strategy, and Language Experience Approach.
