Abstract

AbstractThe differences in cultural backgrounds influence the content of literary works, despite the same theme addressed. The purpose of the research is to compare and contrast an American novel Eat Pray Love (EPL) and Indonesian Pada Sebuah Kapal (PSK) for differences and similarities in the sense of how different cultures influence the heroine in each novel in her pursuit of happiness.  For that purpose, a thematic, descriptive, and comparative analysis is conducted to answer two research problems: 1) what constraint each heroine has to face in her attempts to achieve happiness; and 2) how the novel reflects the different ways in which American and Indonesian values concerning women influence the heroine of each novel. The analysis finds out that the heroine in each novel faces the same marital problem. Both are unhappy in their marriages, but they deal with their problem in different ways. In EPL, the heroine attempts individual redefinition of the self by undergoing material and spiritual search and fulfillment, and finally managed to achieve her true happiness. American individualism allows this. In PSK, the heroine undergoes an internal conflict, attempts for her happiness by committing extramarital relationship but fails to redefine herself and returns to her abusive husband and unhappy marriage. Traditional Javanese norms she strongly believes in do not allow her to strive for her happiness in an ‘unlawful’ way. Different cultures and different eras have their own articulation in literary work. American individualism gives greater priority to individuals, whereas Indonesian communality puts individual after social’s interests.IntisariLatar belakang budaya yang berbeda mempengaruhi dalam perkembangan karya sastra walaupun temanya sama. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk membandingkan novel Amerika Eat Pray Love (EPL) dan novel Indonesia Pada Sebuah Kapal (PSK) untuk mencari persamaan dan perbedaan di antara keduanya dengan melihat bagaimana perbedaan budaya tersebut mempengaruhi kedua tokoh wanita di dalam masing-masing novel dalam upaya mereka mencapai kebahagiaan sejati. Analisis tematik dan deskriptif dalam kerangka studi perbandingan sastra digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan sebagai berikut: 1) hambatan apa yang dihadapi oleh kedua tokoh wanita tersebut untuk mencapai kebahagiaan; 2) bagaimana kedua novel tersebut menggambarkan perbedaan antara nilai-nilai budaya dan masyarakat Amerika dan Indonesia dalam kaitannya dengan perempuan mempengaruhi perilaku tokoh utama wanita di masing-masing novel tersebut dalam upaya mereka mencari kebahagiaan sejati.  Penelitian menemukan bahwa tokoh wanita pada masing-masing novel menghadapi masalah yang sama dalam perkawinan mereka masing-masing. Kedua tokoh wanita ini tidak bahagia dalam perkawinannya. Pada EPL, tokoh wanita ini berusaha mendefinisikan kembali dirinya melalui sebuah proses pencarian jati diri secara material dan spiritual dan hingga akhirnya kebahagiaan sejati. Individualisme dalam masyarakat Amerika memungkinkan hal ini. Pada PSK, tokoh wanita ini menghadapi konflik bathin, berusaha mencapai kebahagiaan dengan melakukan hubungan di luar nikah tetapi gagal mendefinisikan kembali jati dirinya dan kembali kepada suaminya dan penikahannya tidak bahagia. Norma tradisional budaya Jawa yang dipegangnya dengan teguh tidak membenarkannya mencapai kebahagiaan dengan cara yang ’tidak benar’. Individualism Amerika memberikan prioritas terbesar untuk setiap individu, komunalitas masyarakat dan budaya Indonesia menempatkan kepentingan individual setelah kepentingan sosial.

Abstract

AbstractWashington Irving describes the Supernaturalism in Tales of a Traveler. He is one of the earliest American writer of Imaginative literature in the age of Romanticism and it happened of France Revolution that fulfilled by the enthusiasm and liberty. This research is going to find some words to indicate the supernatural element in romantic era. Based on the previous explanation, the writer formulates the problems as follow: 1) Why Washington Irving as the Romantic writer does write the supernatural elements in his essays and 2) What are the words to indicate of supernatural elements in his essays. The analysis finds out that the supernatural gothic and symbol that he described in Tales of a Traveler is one of satire or criticize of the condition in his era, that happened French revolution and there are many conflict in Europe that make people want move to the new place. Therefore, we can call by the transition era. The mysticism is one of characteristic of the romantic era, so the mysticism close meaning with the supernatural that the extra of natural. Irving made satire as criticize of the condition that filled any conflict in Europe after French revolution to make people individualistic.AbstrakThe Supernatural Elements Reflected in Washington Irving’s Tales of A Traveler. Washington Irving menggambarkan hal-hal yang berhubungan dengan dunia supernatural di dalam karyanya yang berjudul Tales of Traveler. Dia termasuk penulis pertama Amerika yang sastranya imaginatif pada Era Romantis yang terjadi pada saat revolusi Ferancis yang ditandai dengan anthusiasme dan kebebasan. Berdasarkan penjelasan ini maka dapat dirumuskan dua pertanyaan yaitu: 1) mengapa Irving di dalam karyanya pada era romantis ini menulis tentang supernatural pada karyanya 2) Apa saja perkataan Irving yang menunjukan hal-hal supernatural dalam karyanya. Maka analisis ini menemukan bahwa supernatural gothic dan symbol yang tergambar didalam Tale of Traveler adalah salah satu sindiran atau keritikan terhadap kondisi yang terjadi pada era revolusi Perancis. Terjadi banyak konflik di Eropa yang membuat orang ingin pindah tempat yang baru. Oleh karena itu disebut dengan era transisi. Karya yang berbau mistik merupakan salah satu karakteristik pada era romantis ini, mistik dekat maknanya dengan supernatural yang berhubungan dengan di luar hal alami. Irving menyindir dan mengkritik terhadap konflik yang terjadi di Eropa pasca revolusi perancis yang membuat orang lebih individualistik.

Abstract

Nowadays, Television is one of media in modern era in the world, the positive effect of television to increase of knowledge and discourses, as the entertainment medium to show of the messages and information to increase of self-quality and it bring social impact in society also. Whereas, the negative impact of television from the sadism, pornography and sinetron that presents about hedonism to encourage adolescent become consumptive. The parents and teachers’ role are significant to decrease the negative effect of Television and religion role also can be able to suppress of negative effect of Television. Keyword: impact, hedonism, glamor.Media televisi merupakan salah satu media modern yang ada di dunia saat ini, media tersebut sangat berdamfak positif untuk meningkatkan ilmu pengetahuan dan menambah wawasan, sebagai sarana hiburan dan penyampai pesan dan informasi serta peningkatan kualitas diri. Masuknya media televisi membawa dampak sosial dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat . Sedang dampak negatif adalah dampak dari tayangan-tayangan yang berbau sadisme , pornograpi, dan tayangan seperti sinetron yang menampilkan kegelamoran yang tidak sesuai dengan budaya kita yang memotivasi para remaja untuk bersifat konsumerisme. Dalam hal ini peranan orang tua dan guru serta kerja sama yang baik antara keduanya maka akan bisa menekan dampak negatif yang ditimbulkan oleh tayangan televisi dengan komunikasi yang efektif kepada mereka. Peranan agama juga memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan untuk memfilter dampak dari hal negatif dari media televisi.

Abstract

Dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, semua kegiatan kita selalu melibatkan bahasa, bahkan dalam beberapa hal bahasa sering merupakan solusi langsung atau jelas dalam menyelesaikan permasalahan yang medianya menggunakan bahasa. Bahasa itu sifatnya universal dan unik. Universal berarti bahasa memiliki karakter khusus, yang dapat ditemukan dalam bahasa di dunia ini. Unik berarti mempunyai ciri khas masing-masing pada daerah tertentu di setiap negara. Salah satu bahasa yang universal adalah Bahasa Inggris, yang telah menjadi bahasa international. Di Indonesia orang menggunakan bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing mereka. Dalam tulisan ini penulis akan mencoba mencari secara semantic, klaster kata-kata tersebut adalah: zest, zeal, ardor, spirit, and enthusiasm. Yang arti keseluruhannya adalah: semangat. Penelitian ini akan menjelaskan cluster kata zest, zeal, ardor, spirit, and enthusiasm dalam kontektual bahasa. Bagaimana perbedaan konteksnya dalam penggunaan kata tersebut. Salah satu contoh kata Zest artinya: energi, semangat lawan katanya adalah: apatis, ketidak pedulian, kemalasan, kelesuan. Kata benda zest memiliki dua arti artinya pertama: Kenikmatan yang kuat dan antusias. Arti yang kedua: kepedasan asam, sinonimnya: kesedapan jadi kata "zest" dalam kata benda memiliki dua arti, dan kata "zest" dalam kata kerja memiliki satu arti Kata "Zeal" memiliki dua arti yang artinya sama dengan antusiasme. Kata ini yang selalu berhubungan dengan tujuan, kesepakatan, dan ketekunan yang tidak ada habisnya dalam kemajuannya. Kata ardour memiliki tiga arti, kata spirit memiliki delapan arti dan memiliki satu kata kerja dan kata anthusiasme memiliki tiga arti yang keseluruhannya menyesuaikan dengan kontek pragmatic dalam bahasa.

Abstract

Latar belakang budaya jawa yang mempengaruhi dalam perkembangan karya sastra yang mempunyai tema tentang perjuangan wanita untuk mencapai sebuah kebahagiaan sejati.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi wanita indonesia untuk mencapai kebahagiaan yang tergambar dala novel Pada Sebuah Kapal. Analisis tematik dan deskriptif dalam kerangka studi yang digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan sebagai berikut: 1) Bagaimana cara yang dilakukan seorang Perempuan Jawa untuk mencapai kebahagiaannya?. 2. Hambatan apa saja yang terjadi untuk mencapai sebuah kebahagiaan yang tergambar dalam novel tersebut? Pada novel Pada Sebuah Kapal, tokoh wanita ini menghadapi konflik bathin, berusaha mencapai kebahagiaan dengan melakukan hubungan di luar nikah tetapi gagal mendefinisikan kembali jati dirinya dan kembali kepada suaminya dan penikahannya tidak bahagia. Norma tradisional budaya Jawa yang dipegangnya dengan teguh tidak membenarkannya mencapai kebahagiaan dengan cara yang ’tidak benar’ dapat disimpulkan bahwa peranan superego lebih besar daripada ego.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know students’ writing skill of discussion text. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research. To reach the purpose above, the researcher was distributing test to twelfth Grade students of XII Agama 1 of MAN 1 Indragiri Hilir. The amount of them is 20 students. After collecting the data, the researcher found that their writing skill of discussion text was good. It was proven by their mean score that is 74.1. It can be concluded that students have had good skills to write discussion text. The researcher assumed that this good result can be because the students had been able to understand what the teacher explain during the teaching and learning process and they also read many texts in the library or the internet.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to know the students' ability in using question tags in the modal auxiliary format eleventh grade of SMA PGRI Tembilahan. Based on the limitation of the problem, the researcher limits the problem in using question tag in modal auxiliary form just focuses on the use modal of can, could, will, would, and should. The researcher conducted a short observation to know the number of classes at the eleventh grade of SMA PGRI Tembilahan. The number of eleventh-grade students just consists of one class, namely Class A. The total of the eleventh-grade students is 20 students. The population of this research was all of the eleventh-grade students because the sample of population less than 100 the researcher used total sampling technique. The researcher used a quantitative method to get the data needed. The research instrument in this research is testing and collected by individual test scores of students where they are asked to identify and using question tags according to the instruction given with the total correct (25). So that, each correct question tag in the modal auxiliary form will be scored by 4. Based on the result of the test, the mean score of the question tag in the modal auxiliary form was 82.6. It was categorized very high level, which included in the interval 81-100. Where 14 students get in a very good score, 5 students get in a good score, 1 student gets in a moderate score and there is no get in a low and very low score. Based on that explanation above, we can conclude that the students' ability in using question tag in modal auxiliary format eleventh grade of SMA PGRI Tembilahan includes in the realm of the category nice and understanding to use question tag in modal auxiliary form.

Abstract

The research purpose is to know the difficulties faced by the students in learning Present Perfect Tense and the cause of the problems. The design of the research is descriptive research. The number of the population was thirty-six students. The researchers used tests, questionnaires, and interviews to collect the data. After analyzing the data, it found that the average score of test results was 44.67, which was classified as a less classification. Then the ability in using To Be (Has/Have) of present perfect tense was placed in a good rating by the mean score 68.29. Moreover, the students' ability in understanding regular verbs was in a less classification by the mean score 34.03. It also happens for the knowledge in understanding irregular verbs which were classified as less classification by the mean score 39.72. Based on the data obtained from the questionnaires, it shows that most of the students felt that Present Perfect Tense is a problematic material of English. It was proven by seeing that more than 50% of the students said that. It caused by some factors; (1) English materials are less favoured by the students, (2) they are lack of English vocabulary mastery, (3) they have difficulties in recognizing to be of Present Perfect Tense, and (4) they could control the form of verbs changes.

Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills, which is taught to secondary school students. In reality, it is still found that students have difficulties in writing. It is needed to investigate why it happened. Thus, the purpose of this research is to determine the students' factor difficulties in writing a narrative text. Moreover, it was designed as descriptive research which took sixty students of the eighth grade of MTs Sabilal Muhtadin Tembilahan as the samples. In collecting the data, the researchers used questionnaires and interviews. Then the data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis and qualitative analysis. The research findings show that there are two main factors; students' factors and teachers' factors. After analyzing the data, the results revealed that the students' factor gained a percentage of 62.43% which was placed at a strong level. Also, the teachers' factor obtained a percentage of 72.95% which was classified as a strong level. The highest students’ factor indicator was the statement “English is very different from Bahasa Indonesia." It was proven by the score 75.3% which was categorized as a strong level. Then the teachers’ factor found that the highest indicator was the statement “Using up to date method and technique." It was classified as a strong level. In conclusion, the factors of students' difficulties in writing narrative text cause both students' and teachers' factors.

Abstract

The problem in this research was fewer students’ motivation in learning English. This research aimed to increase students’ motivation in learning English by using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants in this research were twenty-five students, twelve men and thirteen women in the sixth-grade of MI Sa'adah El-Islamiayah Tembilahan. The data were collected in each cycle from observation, questionnaire, and field notes. The findings of this research showed that the study by using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method has increased the students’ motivation in learning English in the sixth-grade of MI Sa'adah El-Islamiyah Tembilahan after two cycles have done. It can be seen from the result of the questionnaire, observation, and field note. In the first cycle, it was seen that there was a slight increase to the students’ motivation in learning English while in the second cycle; the students' motivation was more increased than the first cycle. Furthermore, the researchers concluded that using the Total Physical Response (TPR) method was able to increase the students’ motivation in learning English. As a recommendation, the method can be utilized to grade up the students’ better-learning motivation.
