Abstract

This research is talking about  investigating whether learning cell technique can improve students’ reading comprehension in recount text. The research was conducted at SMK PGRI Indramayu. The population of this research were the students at X RPL grade of SMK PGRI Indramayu and the samples of this research consisted of 24 students. This research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The technique of collecting data used test and observation. This research was conducted only two cycles. The test  included an objective 10 multiple choice, 5 true/false statements and 5 essay. The research finding showed that the data from two instruments, in preliminary test showed that the students reading comprehension was very low, the average in preliminary test was 50, 5. The result of students reading comprehension in cycle I was improved it was 66, 5. The result in cycle II showed improvement the student’s average score was 78. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that Learning Cell technique can improve the students ‘reading comprehension.

Abstract

The title of this study is Headline’s meaning in On-Line Football Sport News. The aims of this study are to describe the real meaning meaning contained in headline of on-line football sport news and to find out whether the meanings that appears in that headline and choice of words in the headline can represent the contents of the news, view from semantics study study. The data are taken and collected from headline of on-line football sport news from website Goal.com. In my study, the writer collected 20 data and analyzed it. The research method used in this study is descriptive method. The result shows that from 20 headlines, all of them can represent the content of the news and the words are used in the headline has conceptual and associative meaning that set in situational context. Based on the data, We can assume that headline always uses an unusual diction and has an implicit meaning to attract the attention of the reader. To attract the reader, Headline News use an unusual diction (figurative language, make it simple and direct). Then, based on this study, we can assume that from the headline we can know the contet or what the news is talking about.

Abstract

This research aims to find translation procedures from English to Indonesian which are used in translating Spiderwick Chronicles novel. The translator translates from source language (English) to target language (Indonesia). The researcher used the descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data, relates to the aim of this research is to find out the categories of translation procedure in Spiderwick Chronicle Novel. The researcher used the translation procedure (Newmark, 1988:82-91) framework by Peter Newmark for examining the data. Based on the result from the analysis showed that the total number Newmark’s translation procedure applied in Spiderwick Novel is 59 . The most translation procedure applied is shift or transposition with 20 (33,9%), and the least of translation procedure applied are Cultural equivalent , synonymy and functional equivalent with the total frequency 1 (1,7%). The translator used modulations as the second most translation procedure applied in the Spiderwick novel with 14 (23,7%). .

Abstract

Consider the Creative writing is very popular rightnow, the researcher tried to investigated the Students’ engagement through Creative writing activities. This study investigated how far the creative writing will engage the students’ in learning poetry. The participant of this study was students in fourth semester of English Department in Wiralodra University. Therefore, this qulitative study sets out to investigate the students’ engagement in doing Creative writing activities in poetry Class.The findings suggest that Creative writing activities is able to engage students in poetry classroom. Then emotional engagement ( M= 32,63) is dominated followed by behavioral engagement ( M= 17.24) and cognitive engagement (M = 15,24 ). So it means Emotional engage­ment from their perspective has more to do with the pleasant and unpleasant emotions students connect to the activity and behavioral engagement focused on their effort but as cognotively not. In other words, they have effort to simply do the work but cannot focused on understand­ing and mastery. However this result showed that emotional engagement dominated in students engagement in poetry class, cognitive and behavioural still showed the positive engagement in poetry class.

Abstract

This study focuses on the manifestation of speaking anxiety and the coping mechanism that used by the second semester of university students. Young (1991) claimed that anxiety may affect the quality of an individual’s communication or willingness to communicate. Students with anxiety show a passive attitude in their studies such as low motivation in learning and poor in performances and examination. Thus, this study used a descriptive qualitative approach, the data collection was carried out through observation and interview adopted from (Hadziosmanovic, 2012). There were 6 students who are belong to different levels of anxiety participated in this study. The result showed that students experienced hearth racing, dry throat and mouth, muscle twisted, trembling hands, embarrassed, and nervous feeling which belong to physiological manifestation, 3 students experienced lost the words and could not find the right vocabularies in English that leads to switched the language use which belong to linguistic manifestation. In coping mechanism, reminiscence, relearning, and remediation were used by the students. However, only 2 students learn to re-experiencing their previous experiences for the successful performances. Future researches may considered the anxiety manifestation and its coping mechanism in online learning.

Abstract

In this era, writing is one of the skills that should be mastered by the students, because it will be useful in the future. Writing has a purpose of entertaining and of giving the information, for example, in creative writing. This research aimed to know the students’ perception of abilities they acquired after they participated in creative writing at the university level. The method of this research is descriptive analysis. The Participants of this research are coming from students in the fourth semester of English Department in Wiralodra University who took the Poetry subject Then the study resulted in the identification of abilities the students acquired after learning creative writing, the students are more self-confidence, critical reading and gain their vocabulary, grammar and punctuation in writing.

Abstract

In teaching and learning, oral peer feedback has been used as an alternative learning strategy. Involving the students in the teaching and learning process can hopefully improve their skills, especially in improving their critical thinking. Studying this subject was challenging. This study purposed to find out the students’ perception of oral peer feedback in a microteaching classroom. This qualitative study was conducted in a descriptive case study design. 15 undergraduate students participated in this study. All of them were in the 7th semester of the English Education Department for the 2020/2021 academic year, Wiralodra University, Indramayu. To obtain the undergraduate students’ perceptions, the questionnaire was used to get data. The result of the research revealed that knowing what to do before conducting oral peer feedback helps a lot in peer commenting; providing oral peer feedback to my peers gives me new knowledge. Then, the students feel interested and challenged to conduct oral peer feedback. Moreover, the undergraduate students perceived oral peer feedback as having many benefits, such as increasing their teaching skills, helping them manage the class and time, and also helping them how to communicate with students. This study can also be used as a guide for oral peer- feedback in the Micro teaching classroom.

Abstract

Saat ini, penguasaan bahasa Inggris adalah suatu keharusan. Globalisasi dalam segala aspek kehidupan menuntut penguasaan bahasa Inggris sebagai landasan dalam pendidikan. Untuk membangun fondasi penguasaan bahasa Inggris yang baik, pembelajaran dini dianggap sebagai pilihan terbaik. Pembelajaran dini akan membantu siswa untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang kuat tentang bahasa Inggris. Namun, di Indonesia, pembelajaran bahasa Inggris tidak disarankan untuk diperkenalkan pada tahap awal pendidikan. Dengan kebijakan ini, siswa kurang mendapatkan paparan bahasa Inggris dalam proses pembelajaran awal mereka, dalam hal ini di taman kanak-kanak dan sekolah dasar. Menyikapi situasi tersebut, mahasiswa Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Wiralodra menggagas kegiatan Fun Learning sebagai salah satu kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat. Kegiatan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan para pelajar muda dalam hal ini siswa SD untuk mendapatkan pengalaman dan meningkatkan motivasi mereka untuk belajar bahasa Inggris dengan cara yang menyenangkan. Kegiatan ini dilakukan kepada siswa SD kelas 1 sampai 6 di SDN 1 Tegalurung. Artikel ini melaporkan bahwa para siswa termotivasi dan tertarik untuk belajar bahasa Inggris. Kosakata bahasa Inggris mereka juga meningkat setelah kegiatan ini dilakukan. Para siswa sangat antusias belajar bahasa Inggris dan berharap agar dapat lebih aktif dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Pihak sekolah SDN 1 Tegalurung juga mengharapkan kegiatan ini terjadwal secara rutin. Mereka mengharapkan Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Wiralodra melakukan kegiatan rutin di sekolah tersebut. Artikel ini menyiratkan perlunya Pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di Sekolah Dasar sebagai kegiatan wajib karena pentingnya dalam pendidikan siswa.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan Aktivitas Bahasa Inggris Menyenangkan sebagai metode pengajaran kosakata kepada anak-anak. Dalam penelitian ini, para peneliti menerapkan metode pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris Menyenangkan untuk mengajarkan kosakata kepada anak-anak. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini bersifat kuantitatif dengan desain pra-eksperimental. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan di SDN Singaraja 2 pada kelas 4 dan 5 dengan melibatkan total 31 peserta siswa. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik kelompok desain. Sebelum dilaksanakan pengajaran, siswa diberikan pre-test, kemudian mereka diberi perlakuan berupa aktivitas seperti lagu, kartu kosakata, dan permainan. Selanjutnya, mereka diberikan post-test setelah pembelajaran selesai dilakukan. Data yang terkumpul kemudian dianalisis menggunakan SPSS untuk menilai efektivitas intervensi tersebut. Analisis statistik menunjukkan bahwa nilai n-Gain adalah 0,4 dengan tingkat signifikansi 0,000 <0,05, sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa Aktivitas Bahasa Inggris Menyenangkan secara efektif meningkatkan kosakata siswa.
