Penelitian ini berupaya untuk menggali persepsi para mahasiswa terkait materi yang diajarkan dalam mata kuliah Writing for General Communication di salah satu kampus swasta di kota Cimahi. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini ada 33 orang. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini mendapatkan informasi melalui kuesioner dan analisa dokumen. Kuesioner dibutuhkan untuk mengungkap fakta tentang respon mahasiswa terkait materi tersebut. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, para partisipan memberikan persepsi yang positif. Sebagian partisipan bahkan memberikan masukan agar peneliti membuat buku teks yang lebih ramah dengan literasi budaya dan sesuai dengan kearifan lokal di Indonesia. Implikasi dari hasil penelitian ini dapat digunakan menjadi pijakan dalam pembuatan buku yang koheren dengan kebutuhan mahasiswa selaku peserta didik.

Writing is one out of four skills that should be mastered, but Writing is the most difficult one because of its complexity in making sentence. This research is intended to identify the students’ needs related to Writing for General Communication as a subject in the second semester. The research method was qualitative. The data were obtained from test, questionnaire and interview as a triangulation. The respondents were 33 students of second semester of English Department in IKIP Siliwangi Bandung. The data from test showed that students’ difficulties in writing dealing with linguistic problem. In addition, the data from questionnaire revealed that respondents have various educatioal experiences, their first language, their interests, their cultural background and different purposes for learning English. The result showed that almost 100% of students want to learn tenses, kinds of text, generic structure and punctuation. It indicates that there is a need to design a coursebook in Writing General Communication based on the students’ need. ABSTRACTThe issue of using first language (L1) in teaching English has always been a controversy in the field of teaching and learning English. The purpose of this study was to investigate the English as Foreign Language (EFL) students’ perceptions towards the use of L1 (Bahasa Indonesia) in the English classroom. In this study, the descriptive qualitative method was employed. The participants involved in this study are 40 EFL students in the second semester who learn General English in IKIP Siliwangi. A questionnaire which consists of 15 questions was distributed to the participants to gain primary data. To support the data from questionnaire, observation also conducted in the classroom. The findings reveal that the teacher’s use of bahasa Indonesia brought positive/negative perceptions towards students. The students give negative perception towards the teacher’s use of bahasa Indonesia in General English classroom. However, the students also recognized the advantages and disadvantages of the teacher’s use of bahasa Indonesia in the classroom.Key words: EFL; students’ perception; first language (L1); foreign language

This research is a qualitative research which aims to analyze the kinds of dominant deixis in the song lyrics entitled ‘Lover’. The data collected from the lyrics then classified into types of deixis according to Levinson (1983:62) theory. The classification of the data then analyzed by relating the deixis to the references/meaning from the lyrics. The result of this research found that there are 51 deixis found in the lyrics consist of 39 personal deixis, 7 temporal deixis, and 5 spatial deixis. Most of personal deixis in ‘Lover’ lyric refer to the speaker itself which are encoded by first singular personal deixis like I and My. While for first plural personal deixis which is We, mostly refer to the speaker. Finally, this research is expected to provide an understanding of deixis and the context that is conveyed by the speaker. Keywords: Deixis, Pragmatics, Song Lyrics

Three-Step Interview is a cooperative learning strategy that offers an alternative to the competitive approach of whole class question-answer, in which the teacher will provide a certain topic and students may ask questions in pair. The purpose of this research is to investigate students’ difficulties on implementing Three-Step Interview in speaking. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The tenth grade of IPA 3 in one Senior High School in Cimahi which consisted of 32 students were selected as the respondents of this research. Questionnaire and interview were used in order to obtain the data. The result of this research shows that most of the students feel difficulties in linguistic aspects, included vocabulary (94%), pronunciation (56%), and grammar (88%) out of 32 students. Meanwhile, there is no significance difficulties in implementing the technique, only 44% students who find difficulties in the second step. Deixis is the study of how to analyze or understand a word related to the person, place and time in a sentence. This study aims to find out the total and categories of deixis in a narrative text entitled "An Icy Monster". This study uses descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, the researchers read the story of narrative text carefully to find the deixis. After that, the deixis are classified into categories of deixis by Levinson (1983:54) in (Utara et al., 2019). The last, the most deixis found in the story are analyzed according to the theory. The result shows that the total deixis found in the text is 42 deixis, and there are three categories of deixis found, namely personal deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. The most deixis occur in the text is third person of personal deixis. Thus, this study appearance that the aplication of third person of personal deixis in the narrative text is important. In teaching and learning process, teachers without preparation and materials in teaching like chefs without cooking ingredients. It can be assumed that preparing the activity and materials is important for the teachers before they deliver the lesson. On the point of that, this research is aimed at evaluating a coursebook in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) subject. It investigates students’ responses towards ESP coursebook written by Hutchinson and Waters (1987) entitled English for Specific Purposes. The evaluation format used in this research is adopted from Al-Sowat (2012). Limitation of this research is on choosing only one area as the focus of evaluation. There are activities and tasks. The participants involved in this research were university students. The data were collected by distributing questionnaire to the participants using google form. Descriptive qualitative was used to analyze and present the data. The results showed that the coursebook has strength. Students do not feel bored, also those activities can make students more creative and active in the classroom. This research suggests further research to develop an appropriate coursebook for English for Specific Purposes subject.

Seperti diketahui bersama bahwa kebutuhan peserta didik di SMP adalah untuk lulus UN, sehingga para guru bahasa Inggris tidak terlalu fokus pada keterampilan menulis. Target khusus yang diharapkan adalah para guru bahasa Inggris dapat merasakan manfaat dari Flash Card (kartu kata) sebagai Alat Permainan Edukatif (APE) pada pembelajaran keterampilan menulis. Metode pengabdian ini melalui beberapa tahapan yaitu : a) tahap analisa, b) tahap perancangan dan pengembangan konten, c) tahap pelaksanaan dan d) tahap pelatihan. Tahap pelaksanaan pengabdian ini adalah memaparkan tentang pentingnya APE dalam pengajaran menulis. Kemudian dilanjutkan dengan membagi para guru bahasa Inggris dalam sepuluh kelompok dengan tujuan agar mereka mencoba membuat APE menggunakan bahan yang sudah tersedia. Selanjutnya, dilaksanakan workshop menggunakan alat dan bahan yang mudah didapat di sekitar. Untuk menunjukkan hasil dari pengabdian dalam khalayak penggiat ilmu, maka dilakukankan pembuatan jurnal dan publikasi ilmiah. Setelah merasakan manfaatnya, diharapkan mereka dapat mengaplikasikan dalam pengajaran writing. Hasil yang tampak dari pengabdian ini adalah para guru memiliki motivasi yang lebih tinggi manakala mengetahui bahwa metode mengajar bisa lebih variatif dengan cara berkreasi menggunakan bahan yang mudah didapat menjadi sebuah media atau alat permainan edukatif seperti kartu kata atau flash cards. Teachers apply the theories in the campus into reality in the classroom. Unfortunately, they face the truth that some students feel anxious in learning English. The language anxiety makes the students can not explore their performance. It becomes teachers’ anxiety when the students deal with the feeling. The aim of the community service is to discuss and brainstorm between lecturers as experts and teachers as practicians. It aims to analyze the teachers’ anxiety in teaching English. The community service is held in Cililin in January 2020. The community service is started by explaining Language Anxiety. Then, the lecturers explain about Coping Strategies. Then, they explain about teaching English based on Industrial Era 4.0 through cultural literation of Cililin. It is closed by the QnA session. Some of the lecturers by the committee. The result is the teacher's anxiety level is quite high. By joining the event of community service, the teachers can decrease their anxiety because the lecturers can give several advice and solutions. The conclusion is the anxiety level of English teachers in senior high schools can be decreased when they discuss with the lecturers in a community service event.

Pembelajaran daring merupakan salah satu solusi dunia pendidikan untuk tetap melakukan kegiatan belajar mengajar dalam kondisi pandemi sekarang ini. Namun, hal ini pun tidak datang tanpa tantangan, salah satunya adalah kurangnya motivasi siswa dalam belajar daring. Untuk meningkatkan motivasi siswa, maka diperlukan bahan ajar yang menarik perhatian siswa sehingga pembelajaran tidak akan membosankan. Canva merupakan aplikasi yang dapat digunakan oleh guru untuk membuat bahan ajar yang menarik. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan kemampuan guru dalam berkreasi untuk menciptakan bahan ajar menggunakan aplikasi canva. Adapun langkah-langkah kegiatan yang dilakukan dalam pengabdian pada masyarakat ini meliputi beberapa tahapan, diantaranya: a) tahap analisis, b) tahap perancangan, c) tahap pengembangan konten d) tahap pelatihan, dan e) tahap evaluasi.
