Abstract

In decoding implicatures, especially conversational implicatures, interlocutors should carefully pay attention both on the literal and pragmatic meanings. This importance simultaneously affects educators to be adept at implicating a message conversationally, also at transferring it to their students. The duty gets more challenging for the ones teaching a foregin language. This study then is conducted to investigate the conversational implicatures among English instructors from Indonesia who interact using English as their foreign language. Besides, this study also endeavours to trace what maxims are flouted, and to describe the gender-based difference of implicating a message conversationally. Twelve male and twelve female English instructors were invited to voluntarily participate in informal interactions approximately for fifteen minutes without their notice on the focus of this study, revealing 140 implicatures. These are wide-ranging in terms of contents based on the topics they choose, and are similar in terms of the intended messages which are not the same as the ones have said. Moreover, the exploitations also occurr on all four maxims variously: quality, quantity, manner, and relevance. The last, female instructors are observed to implicate more frequently than male ones with the comparison between 88 and 52.

Abstract

2013 Curriculum now has been implemented so widely in Indonesia, especially in English teaching and learning process. It delineates some focal points like student-centred active learning and contextual teaching which hopefully brings the students to learn more effectively. Furthermore, there is an apparent unanimity that the curriculum may lead the meaningfulness of learning. In relation to English teaching approach, Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is likened to the latest curriculum. CLT emphasises on the context and authenticity. Thus, this approach should go along with 2013 Curriculum. This study aims at finding out the implementation of CLT in line with the curriculum, since many previous studies alert some problems happening while CLT is applied not in ESL as its birthplace, yet in EFL context. In fact, Indonesia perceives English as foreign language. But, there are still few studies related to this approach. After observation and document tracking are conducted, it is concluded that Scientific Approach and Communicative Language Teaching Approach are able to blend to create more effective communicative learning.

Abstract

Empowering women entails bolstering their mentality and state of mind, as patriarchy is founded not only on sexuality. Addressing a married woman with the name of her husband or first son is claimed to be a sign of respect. Woman’s public inclusion is also still considered undervalued, which is shown in the way they name eateries. This study, which unfolds eatery names in Yogyakarta Municipality in Indonesia and Malacca in Malaysia, two places with identical historical backgrounds, analysed women’s efforts to increase their bargaining position in society through the naming of their eateries. Although two eateries do place women in a strong position, many of them still struggle to achieve women’s positionalities and social respect.

Abstract

As patriarchy is not solely based on sexuality, energizing women requires enhancing their intellect and state of mind. It is considered a gesture of respect to refer to a married woman by the name of her husband or eldest son. Women's public participation is still deemed devalued, as evidenced by the naming of restaurants. This study examines eatery names in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and Malacca, Malaysia, two cities with similar historical backgrounds. It aims to investigate women's efforts to improve their negotiating position in society by naming their eateries. Although two restaurants place women in powerful positions, many still need help to attain women's positions and social respect.

Abstract

As several studies emerge analysing some literary work translation, there is lack of study focusing on such translation with certain point of view. This study then exists with the aim to qualitatively analyse Toety Heraty’s poetry entitled ‘The Moon is High’ translated by Carole Satyamurti, a British poet, with the aesthetic-poetic view. As the findings, it is concluded that, even though the translator employs some literal translations, but more often she implements aesthetic-poetic translation method to replicate the poetry along with retaining the poetic nuance from the word choices. However, it will be a challenge for whoever translating literary work with aesthetic-poetic translation method, since the transfer of the message will not only demand the lexical equivalence, but also the similar ‘beauty’ of the work.

Public Speaking is one of the keys to success in promoting or organizing the community, in this case, the Dewi Masyithoh Orphanage (PADIMAS), Pemalang Regency. The student of PADIMAS has a program, Garbage Alms Movement (Gerakan Sedekah Sampah), which has an excellent environmental impact. Despite this, the students needed help communicating the program effectively to the community. This training focused on delivering materials like how to prepare mentally and other tips when conducting public speaking, one of which is giving a speech, as well as enriching expressions in daily communication and speech using English. The result is a rise in students' knowledge of techniques for attracting an audience's attention during public speaking; some aspects of self-confidence have yet to improve significantly and require more investigation.

Abstract

In 2023, Yogyakarta Province has documented 308 instances of sexual violence, including cases of verbal abuse. This fact is surprising given Yogyakarta's unique position as a cultural showcase in Indonesia, which is particularly evident in its depictions of politeness and identity. In contrast, Yogyakarta's Javanese propriety culture, known as unggah-ungguh, functions as a vital protective mechanism for its community by integrating local cultural components. This distinctive cultural politeness parallels Leech's Six Maxims of Politeness: Tact Maxim, Generosity Maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim, and Sympathy Maxim. This research examines the correlation between these maxims and Javanese parenting practices as delineated in publications by the Department of Women's Empowerment, Child Protection, and Population Control of Yogyakarta, aimed at educators and parents in Yogyakarta, emphasizing the significance of courteous communication and virtuous conduct grounded in Javanese tradition. Strengthening the initiative from school to university levels, together with adequate support from family and community, may lead to a reduction in verbal sexual assault.
