Abstract

The aim of this study is to understand parenting stress and coping strategies in fathers who have children with AS (autism spectrum). This research used a phenomenological qualitative approach. The data were collected using semi-structured interviews and observation of four fathers who have children with AS aged adolescent to young adult. The participants were obtained through snowballing sampling. The results showed that the fathers experienced stress from various challenges. The primary source of stress is financial because they are responsible for financing their children’s needs. To manage the stress, fathers used various coping strategies. They collaborated with their wives in the process of accepting their child-ren's condition and planning their education (dyadic coping). They also got closer to God, tried to have a positive view of the problems, and were grateful for the progress of their children (religious coping). Individual coping strategies are also used, such as planning, seeking in-formation (problem-focused coping) and regulating emotions, developing positive perception (emotion-focused coping). In particular, religion plays a vital role in the process of accepting the child's condition and finding happiness. This study may have implications for future stud-ies about parenting stress, especially in the father population of children with AS. In addition, fathers of children with AS need to improve their coping strategies and acquire social support from various sources to manage their stress.

Abstract

Abstract

This study involved a mindful parenting training program to reduce parenting stress levels in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The research design utilized a quasi-experimental perspective, involving 20 parents of children aged 12-18 years who had received an ASD diagnosis at least two years prior. Parenting stress levels are evaluated by comparing pre-test, post-test, and follow-up scores using the Parenting Stress Index (PSI). The studies showed a noteworthy reduction in parenting stress after mindful parenting training. Furthermore, analysis of qualitative data suggested that parents of children with ASD exhibited enhancements in self-regulation, mindfulness, acceptance of their parental roles, more adaptive emotional responses, decreased stress, and improved mental well-being.

Abstract

The transition to parenthood has proven to be challenging and stressful for most couples. The COVID-19 pandemic has created even more hardships, creating the potential for increased parental stress and can significantly reduce marital satisfaction. It is known that parents' coping methods can affect the level of perceived stress and marital satisfaction. This study aims to examine the buffering effect of supportive dyadic coping in reducing the impact of parental stress on marital satisfaction in the transition to becoming new parents. To test the hypothesis, we conducted a study using the Parental Stress Scale (PSS), Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI), and Couple Satisfaction Index (CSI). In Indonesia, we collected data from 112 new parents (N mothers = 90%, M age = 27.9, SD age = 2.8). The dimension of emotion-focused supportive DC was found to be significant in moderating the role of parental stress on marital satisfaction F(1, 111) = 11.21, p<0.005. In contrast, problem-focused supportive dyadic coping F(1, 111) = 26.39, p> .005 was found not to be significant in reducing the impact of parental stress on marital satisfaction. The researcher found that parental stress F(1.112) = -2.964, p<.05, significantly predicts marital satisfaction regardless of the level of supportive dyadic coping. In addition, we found that there was a direct effect of emotion-focused supportive dyadic coping on marital satisfaction with a value of β = 6.04, 95% BCa CI [2.52, 9.55], p<0.01 and a direct effect of problem-focused supportive dyadic coping with β = 6.24, 95% BCa CI [1.81, 10.66], p<0.05. The results show that in the transition to parenthood, couples must consider the importance of supportive dyadic coping to maintain marital satisfaction.

Abstract

Individuals with divorced parents are at high risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder, but traumatic events can help individuals to learn things and develop competencies that they did not have before, which is called Post Traumatic Growth (PTG). The purpose of this study was to obtain a description of PTG from individuals who experienced parental divorce. The approach used in this study was phenomenological qualitative. The researcher conducted semi-structured interviews with six participants who experienced parental divorce as children or adolescents. Researchers used purposive sampling method in selecting participants. The results of the study concluded that all participants experienced changes in all dimensions of PTG after their parents divorced, namely changes in interpersonal relationships, changes in spiritual development, the emergence of appreciation for life, the emergence of new opportunities/priorities, and the emergence of self-strength after parental divorce

Abstract

Self-authenticity and the meaning of life are important for an individual’s psychological well-being. However, studies on the relationship between authenticity and the meaning of life using a quantitative approach have been largely carried out in Western countries, with minimum research being conducted in the Indonesian context. However, several studies have found differences in self-authenticity among different social and cultural conditions. The purpose of this study was to unveil the influence of perceived authenticity on the meaning of life by controlling for self-esteem and positive affect in Indonesian adults. These control variables were added to see the influence of the two variables more precisely. This study involved 369 adult Indonesians (aged 18-64 years old, M=32.2 years). The instruments used were the Authenticity Scale, Multidimensional Existential Meaning Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Test. Data collection was carried out online, and multilevel regression analysis was used to test the hypothesis. The findings indicate that, by controlling for self-esteem and positive affect, feeling authentic influences the person’s meaning in life. Perceived authenticity in the 18-35 age group is lower than in the 36-45 and 46-55 age groups. The study also found that the married group perceives themselves as more authentic than the unmarried. The findings of this study can be a basis for future studies on authenticity in Indonesia and help build awareness about the importance of authenticity for Indonesian adults.

Abstract

Building healthy romantic relationships is a critical developmental task during emerging adulthood as it contributes to higher psychological well-being. However, the instability and uncertainty that often characterize this period can hinder emerging adults from forming healthy romantic relationships.  It has been found that self-concept is a key factor in building healthy romantic relationships, as a strong self-concept supports more positive outcomes in romantic relationships. However, much of the existing training only focuses on sexual health education and dating violence. In addition, the majority of emerging adults report that they have not received the relationship education they desire or require, whether from their families or educational institutions. To fill the gap in knowledge about this topic, this study focuses on enhancing self-concept through healthy romantic relationship training. This study hypothesized that participants who completed the training would report higher mean self-concept and healthy romantic relationship knowledge scores. This quasi-experimental study, employing one group pre-test and post-test design, involved 13 participants (M = 21.8, SD = 2.1). The instruments used to measure the variables were the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale Second Version Short Form (TSCS:2 SF) and the Healthy Romantic Relationship Knowledge Questionnaire. Qualitative data were also derived to support the quantitative data. Quantitative analysis using ANOVA Repeated Measures and thematic qualitative analysis showed that healthy romantic relationship training significantly enhanced self-concept in emerging adults. The research implications highlight the significance of providing training on healthy romantic relationship for emerging adults, emphasizing the need to focus on self-concept which can contribute to higher romantic relationship quality.

Abstract

Active-empathic listening skills is one important factor in building healthy romantic relationship for emerging adults. Previous studies have focused more on sexual education, dating violence prevention, active listening, and empathic listening separately, without specifically targeting emerging adults. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of healthy romantic relationship training on enhancing the active-empathic listening skills among emerging adults. The training included knowledge and skills related to active-empathic listening, such as knowledge about healthy romantic relationships, self-concept, adaptive coping strategy, and active-empathic listening skills. This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental within-subject design, measured using the Healthy Romantic Relationship Scale and the Active-Empathic Listening Scale (AELS). 13 unmarried emerging adults (M = 21.9) completed the training session until the follow-up session. Results from quantitative analysis using repeated measure ANOVA indicated that healthy romantic relationship training is effective on enhancing active-empathic listening skills in emerging adults (F(2,11) = 4.872, p = .031). Qualitative data further supported the hypothesis, showed the improvement in knowledge, skills, and confidence in applying active-empathic listening skills within future romantic relationships. Findings highlighted the importance of training programs focused on enhancing active-empathic listening skills to support emerging adults in achieving healthier outcomes in their romantic relationships

Abstract

In the transition to parenthood, couples will face many changes until the child is two years old. Therefore, it is important for couples to apply common dyadic coping. However, common dyadic coping is influenced by individual attachment styles. This study aimed to determine the role of common dyadic coping during the transition to parenthood as a mediator between attachment style and marital satisfaction. This study uses a type of correlational research because correlational research is used to see the predictive relationship between variables. The measures used in this study are Experiences in Close Relationships - Revised (ECR-R), Couple Satisfaction Index (CSI), and Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI). Data were obtained through an online survey of Indonesian citizens aged ≥ 21 years, married, and having an only child aged zero to two years (N mothers = 90%, M age = 27.9, SD age = 2.8). The results of the mediation model analysis on Hayes' PROCESS macro showed that problem-focused common dyadic coping partially mediated the relationships between anxious attachment and marital satisfaction, and avoidant attachment and marital satisfaction. Similarly, emotion-focused dyadic coping partially mediated the relationships between anxious attachment and marital satisfaction, and avoidant attachment and marital satisfaction.
