The infant mortality rate indicates the health status of a country. Previous studies have proven that socioeconomic factors have a significant influence on infant mortality rates in both developed and developing countries. Further studies on infant mortality rates are useful for public service strategic policy in the health sector. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the socioeconomic factors influencing infant mortality rates in ASEAN based on panel data estimates for 2000-2017. The dependent variable for this study was infant mortality rate, while the independent variables were health expenditure, female labor force, maternal fertility rate, and GDP per capita. The authors concluded that the main cause of infant mortality in ASEAN is care during delivery. Other influencing factors include family health status, maternal education level, and socio-economic inequality. This study found that the size of the female workforce has a strong influence on increasing the infant mortality rate in ASEAN. The fertility rate also had a strong influence on increasing infant mortality rate in ASEAN, while GDP per capita had a negative influence on infant mortality rate. Health expenditure is proven to have no effect on the increase of infant mortality rates in ASEAN.

New indexes of environment and institutions are constructed following principal component analysis (PCA), while non-linear panel regression is employed. This study attempts to estimate a non-linear impact of GDP per capita on the environment following the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) Hypothesis for 97 developing countries during 1991-2014. The study reveals that a traditional EKC shows a U-shaped relationship under static panels, with both quadratic and cubic regressions. Interestingly, the inverted U-shaped occurs when a traditional EKC is estimated by the dynamic panels, with both quadratic and cubic regressions. Moreover, the EKC model is inverted U-shaped following static and dynamic panels, with both quadratic and cubic regressions under institutions. Indeed, the institutions significantly contribute to express EKC in developing countries. Policymakers should formulate environmental policies following climate change mitigation in the environmental sustainability framework, improve the quality of institutions, and increase macroeconomic management to anticipate external shocks such as openness, globalization, and FDI inflows.

The ideal community life structure has a strong institutional level. Economists agree on the institution as an important factor in creating economic growth. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of institutional factors on economic growth in ASEAN. Institutional variables include political stability, voice and accountability, government effectiveness, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption, while economic variables include exports and imports. This study utilized panel data estimation on 10 countries in ASEAN during 2002-2018. The fixed effect model was the best estimation model. The findings show that there are three keys of institutions that had a significant influence on per capita GDP on ASEAN, namely voice and accountability, regulatory quality, and rule of law. It could be that if the institutional factors are weak, it will be detrimental to economic performance. The policy implication is that the synergy of all stakeholders needs to be improved for better institutional enforcement.

The advancement of the industrial sector in economic activities can negatively impact the environment. Inefficient use of natural resources causes environmental damage in almost all countries. Environmental damage caused by economic activities becomes a crucial issue. Hence, the main purpose of this research is to estimate the impacts of macroeconomic indicators on increasing CO2 emissions in Indonesia with time-series data from 1970 to 2016. The macroeconomic indicators used in this research were broad money, foreign direct investment, value-added manufacturing, and international trade. The analysis method was ARDL-ECM (Autoregressive Distributed Lag-Error Correction Model) for long-term and short-term analysis. The main findings in the long term value-added manufacturing and international trade have positive effects on the formation of CO2 emissions. In contrast, foreign direct investments have significant but negative effects at the 10% significance level of CO2 emissions. In the short term, only value-added manufacturing and international trade variables have significantly influenced the formation of CO2 emissions in Indonesia. In contrast, foreign direct investments have been proven to be insignificant. Broad money in both the long and short term is insignificant to CO2 emissions. Based on these findings and changing climatic conditions, it is necessary to have economic development policies that reduce emissions to preserve the environment and human civilization in the long term.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of electricity consumption, investment, and school enrollment on economic growth of Indonesia from 1984-2018. Electricity is used by society in every activity including production and consumption. This study used ARDL-ECM method. Based on the estimation results, all variables were stationary at the first difference. Based on the empirical findings, the appropriate ARDL model was ARDL (1, 2, 1, 1). In the long run, investment had a positive influence on economic growth and school enrollment had a negative influence on economic growth. Meanwhile, in the long run, electricity consumption is insignificant to the economic performance of Indonesia during the study period. However, in the short run, there was only investment had a significant and positive impact on economic growth in Indonesia. School enrollment and electricity consumption had no significant influence on economic growth. Speed of adjustment (ECT (-1)) had a significant influence on GDP. With the Qusum and QusumQ tests, the model showed feasible stability. Therefore, more vigorous electricity policies should be implemented for supporting economic growth.

Education is an important variable in economic activity since competent human resources are originated from good quality education. Human resources are primary input in Neoclassical Production Theory, so that this research mainly aims to estimate the impact of education, labor, and foreign direct investment towards the economic growth in Indonesia. The research data are in the forms of panel data consisting of 34 provinces in Indonesia in the period of 2006 until 2019. The average length of school time is employed as the education variable, the number of labor as the labor variable, and foreign direct investment as capital variable. Based on the estimation results, the selected model for analysis is random effect model. The main findings indicate that education is proved to be significantly positive towards the formation of gross regional domestic product; every 1% increase in education can improve economic output by 2.01%. Labor and foreign direct investment are also proved to be significantly positive towards the gross regional domestic product in Indonesia. Therefore, it requires strategic policies for quality-oriented education improvement and literacy program to all corners of Indonesia since education is a long term investment.

Health can lead economic development in many countries. The higher the quality of health, the more space for increasing economic growth and providing prosperity in the long-run. The current study attempts to estimate the effect of health on regional economic growth in Indonesia. Balanced panel data is set covering 34 provinces from 2015 to 2020. The panel data is estimated using system Generalized Method of Moments (GMM). The findings reveal that smoking level contributes significantly and positively on regional economic growth, while health service has no effect. The non-linear impact of smoking level on regional economic growth is U-shaped. It means that higher smoking level stimulates regional economic growth by the increasing of aggregate spending. The local governments should design health service program and control smoking level properly so that the health risk of cigarette consumption does not offset its benefit to the economy. The policy design will produce better human health and life in all provinces in Indonesia. Consequently, the regional economic growth can be achieved in the long-run.
