This research was conducted in September to November 2020. The data collection was carried out in two parts, namely field and laboratory activities. The data obtained then were analyzed descriptively. The results of this study indicate that: (1) Physical, chemical and biological parameters in Palabusa waters indicate the potential site suitability for the development of mabè pearl cultivation are in the very suitable category (SS) is 128, 3 Ha, quite suitable (S) is 64,5 Ha and not suitable (N) is 47,7 Ha for mabè pearl cultivation; (2) The carrying capacity of Palabusa waters for the development of pearl mabè pearl culture is 847 units. Further research needs to be carried out, especially regarding social and economic aspects as well as other water quality parameters that affect the determination of the suitability of mabè pearl cultivation areas such as environmental pollution, waves and tides.

Abstract

The conversion of fish ponds into rice fields in Mattiro Sompe Subdistrict, Pinrang Regency, is a response to declining pond productivity due to environmental degradation and socio-economic shifts. This study adopts a bioecological approach and SWOT analysis to formulate sustainable land management strategies. Findings indicate that internal strengths include clay–loam soil texture, low salinity, and strong farmer interest, while key weaknesses involve distance from irrigation sources and acidic soil conditions. Externally, opportunities arise from government subsidy programs and adaptive rice varieties, whereas significant threats include climate change and seawater intrusion. With an IFAS score of +0.47 and EFAS score of –0.60, the strategy falls into Quadrant II (Strength–Threat), highlighting the need for adaptive policies that leverage internal strengths to mitigate external risks and achieve sustainable land-use transitions.

Abstract

Pond farmers in Mattiro Sompe District turned their ponds into rice fields due to a decrease in crop yields, limited seawater availability for saltwater fulfillment in ponds because the estuary experienced siltation which caused ponds far from the estuary to experience. This study aims to identify the factors that affect the conversion of pond land into rice fields and evaluate their impact on the socio-economic conditions of the people of Mattiro Sompe District, Pinrang Regency. Using multiple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS, it was found that more stable availability of irrigation water and decreased pond productivity were the main drivers of conversion. Economically, people's income increased significantly from an average of Rp8,500,000 to Rp25,855,000 after conversion, with conversion cost as the most influential variable (p = 0.000) and R² value of 0.799. Although there were no statistically significant social variables, land type had the highest contribution to social change (β = 0.316), with an R² of 0.783 indicating the strength of the model. These findings conclude that land conversion has a positive economic impact, but needs to be balanced with attention to social dynamics in the process of adaptation and management of community conflicts.
