Abstract

Need analysis is pivotal before developing materials or syllabus. Some studies indicated the importance of conducting a needs analysis. Although many researchers had already conducted needs analysis studies, there is a lack of proper material that can accommodate the students to learn intensive listening courses, especially during the covid-19 pandemic. This study aimed to get the information that will be beneficial to compose the material of the Intensive Listening course. One hundred and twenty sophomores were employed in a survey study to describe what their needs are related to their listening skills. A close-ended questionnaire was employed to find the students’ needs. The findings indicated that 3 important things can affect the material development process such as materials that students need, the method that the teacher used, and students’ range of proficiency. The result implied that in the process of teaching listening and developing listening materials, the lecturer should be aware of the topics, media, and students' proficiency.

Abstract

Public speaking anxiety poses great challenges to developing these skills. It is estimated that approximately 15% to 30% of the general population suffer from public speaking anxiety, which is the most common type of social phobia. Excessive public speaking anxiety can lead to enormous stress and frustration, impaired speech performance, and further avoidance of social situations that require making public presentations, especially for students. This study aims to investigate the level and the factors that mostly occurred among university students in public speaking. The researchers used a questionnaire of Public Speaking Anxiety (PSA) by Noorrachima (2020) and made the senior students of the English Department as the respondents for this research. The result of the study showed that the PSA level of the seniors of ELEP UB is high and the general sense factor is the highest chosen factor that triggers their public speaking anxiety.

However, limited English materials in this area particularly in Nursing Skill Competency seem to hinder its implementation. The current Community Service Program aimed to provide practical guidance for English subject teachers at vocational high schools-centre of excellence (SMK PK) in developing English materials for nursing. For three months, 16 English teachers in a city in East Java had been involved in this five-stage guidance activities comprising focused group discussion, material development training, material development practice, material compilation, and evaluation. This guidance activity resulted in developed English materials classified into eight nursing-related topics. The developed materials are the product of such integrated elements as the previously developed syllabus, supporting references, teacher teamwork/collaboration, and guidance from each member of the Community Service Team. The program evaluation also revealed positive responses from the participants. The developed English materials are expected to be fruitful and used as an alternative material by all English teachers and students of Nursing Skill Competency at vocational high schools throughout Indonesia.  Keywords: Material Development, English, Vocational School, Nursing

Abstract

The present study aims to find out the dominant challenges experienced by 11th-grade students in writing short drama scripts of narrative text. One hundred six students were involved as research participants. The method used was quantitative descriptive with a questionnaire as the instrument consisting of 15 items about the students' challenges in writing short drama scripts. The questionnaire was distributed to the participants via WhatsApp group, and the teacher researcher asked them to submit it within 20 minutes after it was distributed. The researcher analyzed the participants' results of the questionnaire by using SPSS to find out the mean scores of each item. The mean scores gave information about which items on students' challenges were more dominant. The results show that the students do not experience the challenges of writing short drama scripts because of basic knowledge that the students already have. The willingness of students to read and practice several narrative texts helps increase the students' insight, the use of cooperative learning in class, as well as the readiness and sufficient background knowledge of the teacher to give to the students, are very helpful in developing and writing short drama scripts.

Abstract

Grammar is the system of language which deals with the form and structure of words in making sentences well, therefore grammar plays an important role in English subjects. Yet, many students place grammar as the last choice in English subjects, especially students at Vocational High Schools (VHS) who learn English as English for Specific Purpose (ESP) learners, and they are focused on production skills rather than language skill knowledge (Mahbub, 2019). Therefore this study was held to investigate VHS students’ perceptions of English grammar learning to understand and complete their needs in the class. This study was conducted on a VHS with 112 eleventh graders as the participants. This study obtained quantitative data through a survey by distributing a questionnaire adapted from Xiao (2019), Arif (2016), and Sopin (2015) with three main aspects such as students’ attitudes, students’ learning styles, and grammar teaching method preferred by students in English grammar learning. This study revealed that students at this VHS have positive attitudes toward English grammar learning, they also like guided learning styles, and prefer varied teaching ways from the teacher in learning English grammar.
