Abstract

Kata Kunci: Pengembangan Bahan Ajar, Bahasa Inggris, SMK, Keperawatan  ABSTRACT The implementation of “Kurikulum Merdeka” (Indonesia’s national curriculum) on English subject at vocational schools calls for contextualized learning materials catering the needs in workplace settings, including health industries. However, limited English materials in this area particularly in Nursing Skill Competency seem to hinder its implementation. The current Community Service Program aimed to provide practical guidance for English subject teachers at vocational high schools-centre of excellence (SMK PK) in developing English materials for nursing. For three months, 16 English teachers in a city in East Java had been involved in this five-stage guidance activities comprising focused group discussion, material development training, material development practice, material compilation, and evaluation. This guidance activity resulted in developed English materials classified into eight nursing-related topics. The developed materials are the product of such integrated elements as the previously developed syllabus, supporting references, teacher teamwork/collaboration, and guidance from each member of the Community Service Team. The program evaluation also revealed positive responses from the participants. The developed English materials are expected to be fruitful and used as an alternative material by all English teachers and students of Nursing Skill Competency at vocational high schools throughout Indonesia.  Keywords: Material Development, English, Vocational School, Nursing

Abstract

The use of technology in learning is not only a necessity but also a requirement for creating more creative, critical, innovative, and communicative learning. The integration of AI in learning changes the paradigm of teachers from being instructors to facilitators, collaborators, mentors, coaches, guides, and learning companions who can train students to become independent and responsible learners. However, this is hindered by the imbalance in teachers' knowledge regarding the use of technology in developing teaching materials. This Community Service Activity aims to provide guidance on the use of technology in developing English language teaching materials for English teachers at vocational high schools in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. Teachers will participate in a three-month program for the development of English teaching materials, which includes the stages of needs analysis, training, guidance, and evaluation of activities.

Abstract

English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) is increasingly promoted in Indonesian primary schools to accelerate bilingual competence, yet evidence on teacher readiness remains limited. This explanatory sequential qualitative-methods study examined the EMI readiness of 108 teachers from elementary schools in East Java. An adapted 16-item EMI-Readiness Scale (α =.89) and three open-ended prompts captured quantitative and qualitative data across knowledge, skills, and attitude dimensions. Descriptive statistics revealed moderate overall readiness: conceptual knowledge (M = 2.75), pedagogical–linguistic skills (M = 2.64), and attitudes (M = 2.88). Only 40 % of teachers felt confident in spoken or written English, and the lowest means concerned oral fluency (2.39) and writing (2.41). Regression analysis showed perceived policy clarity was the strongest predictor of self-efficacy (β = .42, p < .01). Cluster analysis identified three attitudinal profiles—ready-supported (28 %), conditionally willing (46 %), and reluctant (26 %). Qualitative data uncovered reliance on ad-hoc self-learning, resource shortages, and ambivalent sociocultural positioning. The findings highlight a persistent gap between policy aspirations and classroom capability, driven by limited professional development, insufficient language proficiency, unclear guidelines, and infrastructural constraints. The study proposes a phased, resource-backed professional-development agenda that integrates content-language pedagogy, collaborative mentoring, translanguaging scaffolds, and systematic monitoring to foster sustainable EMI implementation.

Abstract

English proficiency is essential in vocational education as it equips students with the communication skills needed in industrial workplaces. However, English instruction in many vocational schools remains general and does not address the specific communication demands of different professions, creating a gap between classroom practices and workplace expectations. This study explores how English teachers in a vocational high school adapt their instructional practices and how institutional leadership supports these efforts. Using a qualitative case study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with three English teachers and one vice principal of curriculum at a Vocational High School in Indonesia. The findings reveal that teachers employ project-based learning, authentic materials, and role-play to contextualize English instruction, with partial support from curriculum coordination and leadership initiatives. The study concludes that stronger collaboration among teachers, leaders, and industry partners is needed to ensure that vocational English instruction effectively meets workplace communication needs.
