Abstract

In recent times, learners are required to have the skill of the 21st century, such as collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and technology used as the impact of a more digitized and globalized era. One of the teaching methods which equipped student’s skill needs is PBL (Project-Based Learning). PBL is also named the effective method to apply because students are asked to create their learning content as the implementation of student-centered learning. This teaching method is widely used at any educational level and could enhance students’ motivation. Thus, to determine the correlation between the PBL teaching method and students’ learning motivation, the researcher conducted a study of 67 students in 11th grade at SMA Panjura Malang that opts for a correlation method with a quantitative approach. The questionnaire was adopted and analyzed, it showed that there is a correlation between the PBL learning method and students’ learning motivation in ELT classes. The result was a medium positive relation which means that PBL could be an alternative recommended method to apply in ELT classes.

Abstract

The use of technology in learning is not only a necessity but also a requirement for creating more creative, critical, innovative, and communicative learning. The integration of AI in learning changes the paradigm of teachers from being instructors to facilitators, collaborators, mentors, coaches, guides, and learning companions who can train students to become independent and responsible learners. However, this is hindered by the imbalance in teachers' knowledge regarding the use of technology in developing teaching materials. This Community Service Activity aims to provide guidance on the use of technology in developing English language teaching materials for English teachers at vocational high schools in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java. Teachers will participate in a three-month program for the development of English teaching materials, which includes the stages of needs analysis, training, guidance, and evaluation of activities.

Abstract

Along with the rapid development of technology, local wisdom tends to run into marginalization so that it is completely lost (Choesin, 2002 cited in Rasna & Tantra, 2017). The local wisdom should be able to become a milestone in the community in order to preserve the cultural heritage and the natural resources. Meanwhile, a transformation towards sustainability is urgently needed for our planet, and every other living thing on it including the resources it provides. Therefore, this study aims at exploring the local wisdoms that still exist and develops at several springs in Singosari Malang. Locations were chosen based on the profile of the springs which still have good management based on the local wisdom that are passed on through generations. The springs include Sumber Biru and Sumber Nagan in Gunungrejo village, Singosari District Malang. The research approach used is ethnographic research. Interviews, focused discussions, and documentation were the techniques used to collect the data. The result is descriptively presented in a form of a history of the springs which is retold in the form of short story. DOI: https://doi.org/10.26905/lw.v12i1.3646

Abstract

The integration of social media into EFL learning has become increasingly popular, fostering greater student engagement, collaboration, resource innovation, and personalized learning experiences. This study examines the usage patterns of social media and their alignment with VARK (Visual, Auditory, Read/write, Kinesthetic) learning style among tertiary-level EFL students in the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Brawijaya. Utilizing a quantitative survey design, data were gathered from 100 undergraduate students of the 2023 cohort, all of whom had used social media for EFL learning for over a year. Analysis through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel revealed that audio-based platforms, such as those featuring English songs and podcasts, are particularly favored by auditory, kinesthetic, and auditory-kinesthetic learners. YouTube emerged as the most preferred platform, with the highest mean score (3.64), selected by 31% of respondents. However, the findings indicate that students' social media preferences for EFL learning do not always align with their individual learning styles, suggesting a disconnect between preferred platforms and learning modalities. The study underscores the importance of selecting appropriate social media platforms tailored to diverse learning preferences in EFL education. These findings can guide educators in designing more effective EFL teaching strategies, leveraging the potential of social media to meet varying learner needs.

Abstract

Incorporating ChatGPT in the educational field rapidly gained attention for its potential in the teaching and learning process, particularly in English for Specific Purposes (ESP). This exploratory case study investigates pre-service teachers’ experiences using ChatGPT during their teaching practicum in vocational high schools. Data were collected through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with 4 pre-service teachers from different vocational majors. The findings revealed that ChatGPT served as a valuable teaching assistant, helping pre-service teachers generate content-specific materials, plan student activities, and design assessments. Pre-service teachers also noted ChatGPT's usefulness in addressing challenges related to limited technical vocabulary resources and subject-specific content. However, this study identified several limitations in using ChatGPT, including inaccuracies in specialized terminology, rigid language outputs, and overly simplistic assessment tasks that required careful prompting and editing. This study highlights the need for strategic incorporation of AI tools in teacher education and suggests further research to optimize AI applications in vocational education settings
